Sometimes You Simply Should Not Watch The News If You Don't Want To Get Angry!

Today I took a MyLot break and went to the television to watch a little bit of the Ellen show and then switched to CNN to watch some news. Ellen was pretty good as usual, but the news made me a tad angry! I didn't hear any verbal discussion on the subject but I was watching the crawler on the bottom of the screen and was bemused at first and then absolutely appalled when I thought of the depth of the absurdity of what I had just read. The little snippet was about Barrak Obama; and asked if we thought that his smoking habit would have any bearing on his running for the presidential office. Why? I ask. Why should that be an issue? Has there never been a president that smoked before? Has there never been a president who drank (or is a reformed alcoholic) before? What kind of basis is this for a presidential candidate to run on? As I said, I am angry so I had better stop here before I say things that are very unbecoming and I may at some time have to apologize to someone for.~Donna

First, I'll add my opinion that it seems the news anymore is about ratings, not integrity in reporting, and the newswriters sensationalize for ratings. Sadly, the implied message is that they get more viewers by this sensationalism, so the viewers are in part to blame as well! Anyway, on to Obama and the smoking issue. One of the "most popular presidents in US history," JFK smoked!! I seriously cannot believe that whether a candidate smokes or not would be considered an issue in one's decision to vote or not vote for that candidate. I am not a smoker and I do not like being exposed to second hand smoke, most who have followed/listened to my ramblings on myLot know that. However, those who know that about me also should know that I am also for smokers continuing to have the right to smoke, just not in the face of non-smokers. If Obama wants to smoke as he attempts to get this country out of the sad, sad, state that we are in...let him go for it!! What do I care if he smokes, as long as he can fix us!

crazynurse, You've hit the nail right on the head! The senstionalization of someones habits or character traits, absolutely leads many people around by the nose and surely doesn't allow for direct and intelligent questions like: "Can he or she do the job?" This another reason why I've sworn off broadcast news, I don't even want the networks to get the idea that gossip, rib-poking secrets and irrelevent BS, is what I want... the news that they present to the public is stuffed with more "fluff" then any intelligent human being should tolerate...

in one of the seminar I have attended about leadership and marketing training, the speaker told us that he is not watching news in the morning nor reading the newspaper also in the morning, he is doing it for 10 years now.WHY because he do not want to be influneces or mstart his day with negative energy of the news, as we can see most of the headlines in the newspapers and the news programs are negative things, I know its imformative but the speaker has a point. do not watch news so that you won't get angry, if positive or all good news will start your day definitely you'll have a possitive outlook and mood. it will goes along with you.

i try to stay away from watching the news also because i either get depressed or angry. and with this whole smoking thing that is just plain stupid. it just goes to show that he is human and i would vote for him because he is human and does have a fault like every other person in this world does too. People do not realize that the presidents of the USA are human too and no one is perfect.

Of all the reasons to question a presidential candidate's qualifications... smoking? I know smoking is a hot topic in the US right now, but honestly! I find myself turning off the news more often than not in frustration. I don't care about what celebrity was seen with what other celebrity, what celebrity was wearing undies and what celebrity wasn't, who's getting divorced, what Hilary Clinton was wearing or any other insignificant detail that's considered of importance to the American people. All interspersed between Politically Correct Tear Jerker of the Hour. ah, journalistic integrity....

Ummmm, did you just use journalistic and integrity in the same sentence? Oh, I get it now, it wasn't really a whole sentence! Sorry, MissK, I was a bit confused! ~D

Watching the news always makes me mad. They turn things around so bad that it is pathetic. I agree, why sould that have anything to with his runnin. Do you remember years ago when the news was acturally news. I mean they told it like it was. They did not make up stories or change them around to get more ratings. The media is just a circus these days.

you're so true villageanne. one small issue, they turn into a very gossip catching one. i mean, hello. why can't they just stick to the news and let the people watching comment about anything. just bad news all the time. hello... media! good news is news, too. why can't they feature lots of good news as well? less gossip, huh?

Well, I didn't even know he smoked. I don't know why that would be an issue. It has nothing to do with anything. It's the news media just grasping at straws again and trying to find "contoversy". Silly. Bill Clinton's supposed pot smoking didn't hurt his campaign (of course, he didn't inhale though, LOL). And our current president's wild drinking days didn't stop him from being elected president--TWICE. So if the crawler on the bottom of the TV screen was about Obama's smoking habit then I have only one thing to say about that: it must have been a slow news day!

This is why I'm on an indefinite "newsfast". The very thought of watching news or hearing it tends to annoy me. I'm not here on this beautiful Planet to be treated like a garbage can that some media-based "hair-do" can hurl into anytime he or she feels like...

I avoid the news regularly now. The news is usually depressing, aggravating, or the same thing over and over again. It is ridiculous. I used to be a journalism major so I am glad I did not go into this field.

The news has been upsetting as long as I can remember...It always reminds me of a scene from a great old move called "Time After Time" In the movie, Jack the Ripper (David Warner) stowed away in a time machine into 20th Century America. He's glued to a TV in a motel rivetted by news about Vietnam, freeway crashes, murders, rapes etc. The hero (Malcolm McDowell) confronts him and pleads with him to go back to his own time. The ripper character points to the TV and says "No way. I was a freak back then. I fit right in here".

yes i know what you mean i see the instigation that goes on the news it is upmost ridiculous. I mean the media can hype anything up so much and thats partly why the world is in the shape it is today.

If you want to be happy, never listen to the news.. They never say anything cheerful anyway.. Read only the back pages, usually it's about good stuff.. Unfortunatly you can;t totaly disconect yourself from waht happnening in the world, but if you would live in some far distant village...

Actually, I think I like the guy now that I know he is a smoker! Isn't that funny? I hope he is one of those smokers though, that look at people weird when they give a stupid reason as to why he should "quit". I don't think you should be mad at all, but another reason to vote for the dude! thanks for the info!

That my friend is the reason why I don't like watching news on TV. It just gives me a bunch of headache and makes me realize how turbulent or world is becoming.

Geesh--that is a stupid reason to not be voted president. I'm sure there have been a lot of presidents who have smoked. It isn't really like it impairs their thinking ability. People will say anything so that another person doesn't get elected. I take what the campaign managers say with a grain of salt because they are full of lies. I would just love to see one political election that wasn't full of lies.

You are so right. That is crazy. We've had presidents who have done a heck of a lot worse. So what if he smokes. It's a free country it should have no bearing. This is related to the news but kinda off topic. I was watching yesterday and they had a story about two guys that abused a puppy really bad and then put the puppy that was still alive in the oven and watched him bake. I thought to myself why do I watch the news. I get sick more and more when I read about these crazy people. Well I guess Obama announces his run for presidency today doesn't he?? Or has he already done that?

Hi! I get angry most days watching the news and for that watching chat shows, we don't have Ellen over here in the UK but we do have similar! Because I have the TV on while I'm on the pc I usually have the 24 hour news on! It does seem kind of mad that they are even mentioning such a silly item as smoking and running for presidential office, especially when there are far more important things going on in the world and that in itself makes you mad!

Yes, I agree!! Sometimes, you simply should not watch the news if you don't want to get angry. Most of the news nowadays are depressing and frustrating. They are reflections of our environment but are sometimes exaggerated by our media.
