Insomnia .. What works best for you?

Sometimes we cannot avoid not being able to sleep for various reasons or for reasons we cannot fathom. In my case if I take coffee in the afternoon or evening, then I have it. I also get insomnia when I am bothered by a problem or simply when I am thinking of so many things and when I am depressed. What works best for you or what do you do when you cannot sleep?

Its not uncommon to be insomniac sometimes. But if it persists over longer period of time then one should definately take a professional advice. However it is best to avoid medications for inducing sleep. Few time tested formulaes can be tried. ie. to avoid drinking coffee/tea or other stimulants in the second half of the day and strictly no no at night time. Have light dinner devoid of fatty food. If possible take hot bath before going to bed or simply wash the feet with water. drink some warm skimmed milk. Do not think whether you'll get sleep or not. Make room light as dim as possible but not completely dark. If still the problem persist then go for meditation. Simply close the eyes, take deep breath, try to get your mind blank. Just think that there is a light within you. If any thought comes, treat it as an unwanted guest. The thoughts will come and go. Do this for about 15 minutes and it can be extended to 30 minutes also. I am sure after first few days you'll love to go to bed and wake up most refreshing in the morning.

I have fibromyalgia, so sleep disturbances are frequent with me. When insomnia strikes, there just isn't much I can do, short of taking sleeping pills, and I don't like the way they make me feel the next day. So, I just suffer through it until it's over. Sometimes it takes a few nights, sometimes it's a week or more! I tell you, it's rough on the mind and body when you don't sleep. I feel like a zombie during those times.

Math problems work for me. They are so boring that they put me right to sleep. If that doesn't work, I take a pill.

Your problem is exactly like yours! But I am grateful that this condition is not at all bad because we only experience it once in a while, isn't it? For me, I would just let it pass and usually I would be able to sleep again after not being able to sleep for two days or three. What I do is to avoid coffee because coffee definitely will prevent me from sleeping. Another thing is I will do heavy work so that I will be so tired and it is easier for me to fall asleep at night. good luck for you.

Lately I had been having trouble sleeping. I found these wonderful Relaxation CDs. I just put them while I am trying to go to sleep. They are about 45 minutes long. I don't think I have ever heard the end of these because I usually fall asleep. I also take a herb called Valerian. It is supposed for helping your sleep and it does seem to work. Give it a try.

When I get insomnia I will just get up and drink a cup of hot milk, then go to bathroom and then lay back on my bed. If I can sleep, then it's good. If not, then I will just lay there and wait for the sleeping worms to come and get me. I don't tend to wake up and do my work, cuz if I do so, then it means that no sleeping for me again.

In my personal opinion and 5 years experience, insomnia has to be one of the most crippling conditions that has ever effected me. I'm not one for taking medication for long periods of time, but prescription sleeping tablets, as prescribed by your doctor, taken for 3-5 days at a time during an 'insomnia period', seems to re program your body. I go for 5-7 days with no sleep what-so-ever due to bi-polar and and an acute anxiety disorder and it is horendous!! It just makes it all worse! Hallucinations, depression, lack of concentration and a general lack of ability to function and take on general day-to-day tasks. My best advice to you is the following :- 1- Keep a pen and a notebook next to your bed. Write down ANYTHING that's on your mind and review it sometime during the following day. When we're tired... We tend to over react. Stress is a killer, but 90% of the time, we are making mountains out of mole hills.. 2- Swith to decaf! 3- Check that any medication that you are currently taking is not the cause. 4- Partners sleeping habits. 5- Weather... Our bodies react in a way that we are not aware of... Apparently ( I find this one confusing! ). 6- Genetics. ......Etc, etc, etc.....

I used to have insomnia almost every night for a long time. I finally figured out that no matter how tired I was, as soon as I crawled into bed and it was quiet, my mind would start racing with all kinds of things. I started taking a hot bath about an hour before bedtime, they say that as the body cools it makes you more sleepy and able to fall asleep. I also changed the tape in my brain...instead of worrying and mulling things over, I just start my mental tack on what I am grateful for. Not sure, maybe I'm boring myself to sleep, lol, but it works. No deep thinking, but rather: I'm thankful I have a roof over my head, I'm thankful that I have food to eat, etc, etc, etc. It works for me:-)

The best way to get sleep insuch cases is lie straight down, with your palms on the side and ur stomach facing the ceiling.Try relaxing.Start observing your breath.Observe how it goes out comes in.Slow down your breath and feel how you breath and concentrate on your breath. And then you will be asleep in no time at all.

well sometimes when I cannot sleep I grab something to read...or answer crossword puzzles...It makes my eyes tired from reading...and thinking if I am doing the crossword..and my arm aches when I am doing the crossword and that makes me tired and I just decide to go to sleep...lol...I do the crossword lying down..But seriously I do that...and also sometimes I overwork so when I am tired I can easily sleep...a nice warm bath would help and a warm glass of milk.

I have transient insomnia. What I do is I sleep durng the day if I had the chance. If not, I don't force myself to sleep. Forsing yourself to sleep during an insomnia attack will wear you out and will leave you more stressed. =) If you can't fight it, join it. =)

i don't believe i have insomnia but i have gotten into a sleeping pattern where i fall asleep only after 4 am and then i would wake up at around 11 am. i have posted a topic about this, asking people how i could change my sleeping pattern to a normal one. most of the people who responded told me to do very physical tasks during the day so that i would be very tired when night comes and will fall asleep easily. others suggested that i read a book or drink chamomile tea. i tried exercising for an hour during the day and it worked for me. i'm too tired to think about my worries at night that i easily fall asleep.

I'm actually having a hard time sleeping lately specially when I take a nap in the afternoon, that's why I avoid doing that. They say you must think of something peaceful in order to sleep, but for me I just try not to think of anything at all.

I am a person who normally sleeps late, past 11pm would be the earliest but often times 1 am. However, if i had taken anything with caffeine (i.e. coffee, tea, cola..) late in the afternoon and if im thinking about some serious problems, insomnia sets in and i could stay up all night awake. When it happens, i don't force myself to sleep but rather take a warm shower, drink warm milk and then grab something to read while lying in bed. A low, mellow & soothing music would be playing in the background. The reading part will keep my mind away from what im deeply thinking or worrying about then after sometime my eyes would just get tired and i could fall asleep. I just make sure that i already set my alarm prior to lying in bed so i could get up on time for work in the morning.

I wish there were an easy cure for insomnia. I had it pretty bad last night. I can't drink any caffeine after lunch time or I won't be able to sleep. If I have a lot of stuff on my mind, I can't sleep no matter what. I usually try to read for a little while and drink milk. Other than that I'm not sure what to tell you. If it continues, then you can go to your doctor and see what they recommend. There are medicines you can take, but I'm not big on that kind of stuff. Some people say Tylenol PM knocks them out.

I always have a hard time sleeping at night and usually don't go to bed very early but once I am in bed I try to make myself stay there as I know I am going to be tired the next morning . I usually try to think of something that will get me to fall asleep by trying to find an interesting dream of some sort of even if I don't fall asleep at least it will keep me in bed .

its common when you are in depression or thinking hardly about anything then you hardly get sleep. The best way is try diverting your mind to something else. Its anything that makes your mind busy or some interesting thoughts.

I get insomnia if I think about money. Other things don't really concern me as much. I used to be concern about friends and work, now I am self employed so I don't really bother about those anymore. I'm more worried about keeping my business and how to keep my customers. I will drink Camomile tea, write my thoughts down and then go to sleep. Maybe it's only mild insomnia, if it's severe I suggest ask your doctor.

Yes mine is just a mild one, and doesn't happen very often. But how I hate it when I see everyone fast asleep and I am awake like an owl!
