Yes. Do not make a very big celebration, so that the child is neglected. Many people at home often keep the parents away from the children during such times. The child feels neglected, gets frightened internally. Somebody may feed the child something bad too. I have experienced such a thing. Let the child grow beyond five years then only you celebrate in a big way.
Of course, this is just my suggestion. Happy birthday to Dear ... well in advance.

It really depends on whether you want to splurge on a big 1st birthday celebration or just a simple one, what's important is you have family and close friends over to celebrate your son's 1st birthday party. Make sure you document every minute of the birthday party/celebration through photographs and home videos. In my country, parents usually splurge (up to $2000) for their child's first birthday party. Whether you have a high budget or not, what would make the party special is seeing your son enjoying it.
It would be best to have a theme (like Blues Clues, Cars, etc.) and work around that theme, from souvenirs, decorations, and cake design. Balloons is a must, your son's face will light up when he sees those balloons. If you have older kids attending the party, best to have party games and prizes ready for them. The usual party games will be fine, like pin the tail on the donkey, trip to Jerusalem, etc. For food, since it's a children's party, you can just choose to serve children's food for everyone: spaghetti, burgers, fries, ice cream, chicken, etc. since, based on my experience, that's what the adults look forward to when attending children's birthday party. For my daughter's first birthday party, I got a separate menu for the adults consisting of roast beef, lasagna, etc, and a separate one for the kids (spaghetti, hotdogs, etc). Most of the adults ended up getting from the children's menu as say say that's what they want to eat in a children's party.
To help you plan out for your son's party, here's a short checklist: balloons, ice cream, cake, party decorations, party hats for the kids, themed paper plates and paper cups, games, prizes, kiddie souvenirs, invitations (you might want to try making your own personalized invitation with your son and a cartoon character on it, to cut costs), table and chair rentals, drinks, entertainment (mascot/magician/face painter), venue.
Hope this helps! Happy party planning!

In my country 1st, 7th, 14th & 18th birthdays are usually celebrated in a special way. Have even a simple party at home or in a cheap restaurant if your home is not very spacious. Have balloons and invite kids who are more or less the same age as your son. A birthday cake is a must!

Happy early birthday to your son! My daughter is actually going to be one on the 28th of this month. We're going to have a party with all of our friends an family. I can't give you any advice from experience, but I can tell you what my plans are!
-Instead of one big cake, we're doing a small cake for her, then everyone else will get cupcakes!
- http://www.birthdaydirect.com has some of the cheapest birthday supplies I've been able to find!
-Try to schedule the party around your son's naptime. That way, he won't be crabby during the party!
Hope those help!

C ongratulations on getting to this important milestone! I have 2 sons...
1. Pick a theme (I did Blues Clues for Max and Teddy Bears for Jack)
2. Plan a simple meal or dessert and coffee (I did baked ziti and cake for Max's and desserts and coffee for Jack's)
3. Invite a small group of family and/or friends (you don't want the birthday boy to get lost in all the commotion-try to keep it small!
4. VIDEOTAPE the entire thing! Give your camera to someone else so you can enjoy your son's day.
5. Make a 1st birthday tshirt by painting on a plain shirt with fabric paint. Let the guests write a special msg on the back with permanent marker. During cake time, put the shirt on over his clothes instead of a bib.
HAVE FUN!!!!
