Well I checked my Peter Pan peanut butter today and it had the 2111 code on it, which means it fell into the group that is tainted with salmonella. I ate some of this peanut butter the other day, but did not get sick. However, my friend ate it several times in a row and has been very sick. We just never knew it was from the peanut butter. She just thought she had a stomach virus. So get your jars out and if they are Peter Pan or Great value and the code has 2111 on the lid then do not serve the peanut butter. Call your grocer and they should exchange it for another brand or give you your money back. Here is the article about the peanut butter recall. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/02/15/health/main2479941.shtml

I checked mine out yesterday and they were all good. This is really getting scarey with all the recalls on food lately. I am glad that grocery stores are trading good peanut butter for the contaminated jars.

I checked mine and that number was on ours too. We haven't gotten sick but I threw the peanut butter out and kept the lid. I'm going to take it back to the grocery store that I got it at. We had the peter pan honey peanut butter. We had eaten some of it but luckily we didn't get sick from it.

I've got one, too. Its funny, we usually eat Jif, but I believe Peter Pan was on sale that day and I took it. Now I have to return it to Wal-Mart.

Hm, I think that would be interesting, but I think I will mail the lid in because then they will give you full retail value (which is more than I probably paid for it). I recommend the type without any hydrogenated oils such as Peanut Butter and Co, that is so yummy! Pablo

Man, that peanut butter scare is so creepy.. salmonella from peanut butter :/ We had a jar in our house, but I'm really not sure if it had the right code or not. My father ate almost every last bit of it before the warnings came out, so I'm just really thankful that he's not sick. I'm so sorry to hear that your friend felt really sick :( I hope that they're feeling better now!

Yes my friend is feeling better now. I think just finding out it wasn't a stomach virus was a relief.

I hope you are well and pray that you may not be affected by it. Salmonella bacteria are a major cause of food poisoning and infection from poultry, reptiles, and pets. Salmonella organisms can cause a wide variety of illnesses, including typhoid fever, meningitis, and osteomyelitis (infection of the bone). Some infected children have no symptoms at all, but the most common infection caused by Salmonella is gastroenteritis Salmonella symptoms usually begin about 24 hours after exposure (from 6 to 72 hours). Enteric fever can occur up to 60 days after exposure. The symptoms usually go away within a week in otherwise healthy children

Thank you for the hope and pray, I am fine. My friend is getting better. It does bother me since this is almost always served to children who could become dehydrated and die easier than an adult.

That is exactly what I said when this happened. The spinach thing was bad enough, but goodness this is peanut butter. Something most everyone feeds their children and the elderly eat this often too. I am going back to my carb control peanut butter. I couldn't believe I changed to Peter Pan, I have never purchased this brand in my LIFE and never will again.

What I do not understand is how the salmonella got into the peanut butter. I thought that peanut butter was pasturized before going into a jar and sold. Pasturiztion is suppost to kill germs, isn't that true?

They are still investigating that. The only thing I have read today was something to do with the heating process of the peanuts. I wasn't sure if they were saying they did not heat them long enough or hot enough. Hopefully we will know soon.

I had two jars of it myself that I just tossed in the garbage. One jar was almost empty and hubby says...oh that did taste funny! At least he didn't get sick from eating it!

It is scary. My father eat peter pan because it does not effect his sugar like other brands of peanut butter do. How he is worried about buying it at all. My father was getting sick off and on. He could not hold anything down for days. We to was thinking it was a virus. He went to the doctor four times because everytime he ate something/anything it came back up.

I also had peanut butter from that lot. I had been extremely sick with headaches and vomiting for awhile, then this came out. Now I have to go to the doctor to get it on paper.

We had a student out from school Friday becuase they got ahold of one of these jars. It's sad and scary. It's been all over the news here and I tell you, it gives you the creeps to think this is a well known brand this could happen with.

As I sat here eating my peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and reading this discussion I thought I best go check my jars. I have 4 jars of peanut butter in my house and I am a huge peanut butter lover, but luckily none of the jars are either Peter Pan or the Walmart one. It is scary to think about. I think your friend should go to the doctors since he/she is sick. It never hurts to be safe.

Thanks for the post. I wonder about other brands. I have Kraft peanut butter. I am leery about eating that even though it was not earmarked as being tainted. Yikes. PB&J sandwiches can get sick too!

Yep, we have one of the 2111 jars as well. We normally buy Jiff, but one day I noticed that Peter Pan came out with this new "whipped" peanut butter and thought that that would be good to try for the little ones. It seemed really dry and was harder to spread. Didn't like it, but we were eating it. My two little ones had lots of runny diapers for quite awhile now...and here I just thought it was there teeth. A couple of times I had some, and for about 3-4 days I was deathly ill and just thought it was a stomach bug or something, but thought it odd that noone else in my family got sick. Our local grocer said to mail back in the lid for a refund. They do not want to exchange it at the store. I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle to spend a couple of dollars to mail a lid, just to get a couple of dollars back. We'll probably just throw ours away.

I check my great value reduced fat peanut butter and just saw 1116 at first. When I looked closer I noticed that the 2 has started to rub off. My jar is half empty! I didn't know until I read your post that the recall included great value. I thought it was just peter pan. Thank you so much you have just saved my husband and me from getting sick!

While the current scare is a valid one with the Peter Pan and Great Value brands, one should bear in mind that peanut butter in itself is not a source or carrier of salmonella. While the matter is under investigation by the authorities concerned, it could very well be the result of some contamination during the manufacturing process. One should not fear using peanut butter as such, so using other brands should be fine.
