Anybody else combine Wicca with Native American Spirituality?

I started learning Native American Spirituality about 14 years ago. Then about 5 years ago my daughter said she was interested in studying Wicca, and it came out that my step-daughter had been practicing for years. I decided that I'd better find out what it was all about, and started reading Scott Cunningham books. I found that it blended quite well with what I was already practicing, so I practice them both. Anybody have a story to share?

Actually I do blend Nat.Am Spirituality with Witchcraft (not Wicca) as well as Vodou and Buddhism....I dont have any stories to share mind you I mean its just the way I do things and it works out very well for me...Though many think its odd that i would be able to combine those paths and some actually think its not possible..they really do mesh together beautifully but I find that so many ppl dont look outside the box so they dont see how it could work.

Oh absolutely...and I think if more ppl followed their true deep down core selves rather than following the masses or family/friends/neighbours etc we wouldnt have so many stressed out and angry ppl in the world....thats just my opinion of course

That's awesome that you've found a way to blend so many things to fit you. Like I said above, I think we all have to find the path that's right for us as individuals. We can't go wrong if we follow the real, deep down truth in our hearts.

I have been noticing your Avatar for awhile and decided to check your site and see if we had anything in common. Even though you posted this discussion 6 months ago I could not resist commenting...because this combination is what I have been practicing for years. I started out with Native American Spirituality and Shamanism. Then another parallel with your path is the fact that I began looking into Wicca when a friend introduced me to Scott Cunningham's books. The oneness with All That Is and the connection to power animals, the elements and directions works well for me. One of the authors that assisted me in my connection to the natural world and wildlife is Ted Andrwes. His Animal Speak and Animal Wise books really deepened my appreciation for and connection to the amazing animals we share the world with...and their special medicine powers. They are books that I return to for reference every time I spot an animal...I go there to see what special message their presence is revealing to me in the moment. Glad you posted this...I think we will probably be having more discussions in the not too distant future. Great topic...glad you presented it!

Thanks for your input. Yes, it does seem that we have a few things in common. I haven't gotten quite so heavy into the animal powers part of things. I have a bearded dragon as my "familiar". I wonder what that means? (Man this discussion is old, isn't it! lol) ~Ginger~

I actually blend Native American Spirituality with Christian beliefs. They actually do blend nicely, if you read the Bible with an open mind and separate actual religious dictations from historical culture. It's been very beneficial for me and has helped me center my life in ways I didn't even know I could.

Thank you for your response. I'm glad that you have been able to blend the two and have it work well for you. My personal belief is that we each should follow our own conscience. Because, inside we know what is the right way for us as individuals. One way is not the right way for everyone.

I don't have a story to share, and I don't share your beliefs being an atheist myself, but I thought I might comment on the fact that both are pagan religions derived from the same source, which is why they're so similar in practice and blend as well as they do. Pagan religions are the oldest in existence, and although modern Wicca differs quite a bit from what would be considered authentic, it follows the same principles that every pagan culture has .. the worship of multiple deities as compared to one central god, the worship of nature, etc.

I have to disagree with you just a little bit here. My Native American spirituality does not include any deity other than what some call Great Spirit, Great Mystery, Creator, among many other names (it's all the same entity). Nature is respected and loved. In my opinion this is not "worship". All in all they are very similar and quite easy to blend.

I must admit I know nothing about Native American Spirituality but it's something I would be open minded at looking at, perhaps if you can send me some links on the subject if you have any I would be quite keen to read up on it as it sounds really interesting! Brightest Blessings!

One thing you really have to be careful of is information in books, movies and on the internet. The best teachers are the Elders of a tribe. I studied with different ones in person. That's the way it has been done traditionally for hundreds of years. Even then, there are people out there that are untrustworthy and will lead you wrong. There is an unbelievable amount of misinformation out there. I have become a solitary practitioner for this reason. I wish I could give you a better answer, but I can't. The most important thing in what I learned was that everything you do, or pray for, is for the good of others - not for yourself. Except for guidance, strength and understanding.

I used to study Wicca and was had spent time with the High Priestesses of Ravenwood in Atlanta. After years of being involved with Wicca and Spiritism, I became a Christian. Life is so much better that I would never turn back that what I had in Wicca. It makes so much more sense and I'm so much happier, too.

I'm glad that you found the right path for you and that you're happy. We often need to experience many different things before we find it.

I don't blend, per se. However, because I am half Native American, I do tend to use things from both sides of my heritage. My great-grandfather and members of his family taught me things that were Native American, and his wife taught me things that were Celtic. Sometimes throughout my life it's seemed like I'm leaning one way more than the other, and right now I'm definitely more into the Celtic side. However, there are also parts of the way I live my life that I can look at and say "I do this because I am Native American."
