GOD - She or He?

I wonder why many religions refer to god as a male. In all my readings I have not come across any credible justification of why God should be either male or female. Inviting discussion on why you think God should be considered MALE or FEMALE. Thank you for your response. I rate all answers.

The reason why so many religions refer to God as male is because men tend to be in power. For example, the Bible was written in a time when men were in power, was written by men, and therefore "God" is generally referred to as male. However, even in the Bible it is stated that God is really neither male nor female. A lot of older religions with multiple gods have both male and female gods. So really this is mostly an issue in monotheistic religions.

You know that this question flys in the face of the great wisdom of never ever discussing religion or politics. All you really have is oppions and no true verifiable answers. But it is an interesting topic. It has always been generaly felt he is male. The reason was because back when the bible was written men were dominate in almost everything. So of course the assumption was that he is male. It is highly unlikely that oppionion will change much except for some people. However being male or female is not really the point. He/she is ominpresent and will always be. Because for each of us God is truly a belief or not it truly is up to the indivigual as to how they feel about this. For me he is male but there is no reason why for you she could not be female. Hows that for a political answer?

NEVER - I agree with you will I raise such a topic in a social situation. But it has been fun in University debates and in mylot it is great because so much light is shed. We do get some heat from time to time, but then we are all big gals and boys and can deal with heat. I am very easy with other peoples faith. "I believe and therefore I am" is quite a time tested aphorism that is often used, and that to me is just as well as somebody who says "God exists only exists in your mind". Well said as usual.

Good question but you left out one very important option. The missing part is not the question of gender, it is the not question as to gender but whether there is on at all. I avoided the s word so this would not get a mature content tag. Oh please save us from the robot censor.

Fair enough! Wanted to make sure that there is more "LIGHT" than heat in this thread! Cheers and thanks for posting.

In my opinion, God is neither male nor female. We can't limit God's image to our own logic. As for referring to God as He, that's because of our language. In arabic (I am a Muslim if you are asking), anything is either he or she. Whether it's animal, person or anything. The sky for instance is called she. Same for Heaven, Hell and Earth. So if it was "she", someone would ask why not "he". God is not a human and that's why I only think that it's a linguistic matter. God knows best.

Thank you Cerium. I do appreciate your view that God is neither male or female. Since Arabic has only two genders, there is much debate about the gender issue among grammarians. Though some nouns and adjectives have commonly accepted usage, this has changed over time. How then would the role of Allat be explained in the Koran? If indeed Allat was the consort of Allah, was Allah male? There seems to be some uncertainty there.

Then does Allat represent the essential duality of Allah or is she someone conveniently dropped by Islamic theologists when the Koran was re-written?

Allat is not the consort of Allah. This is totally wrong (based on the Quran and the teachings of Islam).

I think that trying to give God a gender is absurd. If God is above us, God is way beyond all these things. We are human, hence limited, and we try to give God human features that make him/her closer to us. But that's not how it is. God is god, not a man, not a woman, just god.

Well said. A formless, genderless God, it shall be from this perspective.

are you crazy? god is not women or men

Mr_ilham, In answer to your question, my answer is a big NO. However, what is the basis for you to say that. There is enough debate in the world of Islam to bring up issues of Allah and Allaht. Would you care to expound on that, rather than make a blanket statement.

I think people do this from being taught that way. When I think of God I do not think of any gender at all. However, the Bible does teach us God is the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, so a father can only be male. Another reason is the stories told from the Bible God is always very stern and powerful like a man. Think about it though he has forgiving ways like a woman. We were all made in the Gods image, so that would mean he has both qualities, God is male/female characteristically. The old testament always speaks of God as the Father and we can only compare that to male gender. Persoanlly God is a spirit with all gender characteristics.

Thank you for that considered response. It is true that the Bible ascribes a "masculine" gender to God. And God is what you make God to be - your own personal mission statement (to borrow from corporate speak).

I was reading through this discussion and I am amazed and intrigued by the responses. So many myLot users are very knowlegable about religion and theology, far beyond what I can understand. I envision God as a spiritual being. The pronoun "He" is used to refer to God, although I don't think of that as a gender assignemtn. I don't believe that God is a human; he is far above that, and He is neither male or female. According to the Bible, God created Adam (man) first, and the Bible was written by men. I think it logically follows that we would refer to God as "He" based on the perceived superiority of men since Biblical times.

Sure Laurie, it certainly is a matter of faith. And if someone believes in the Bible - then the Biblical defenition is what works for them. Jewry is about 3000 years old, Christianity is about 2000, Islam. Prior to that Greeks, Vikings, Incas, Aztecs, Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists, Shinto had higly evolved belief systems. These are inherently complete, with philosophy, theology, dogma and mythology. Yes you are right - this discussion has elicited a lot of interesting and illuminating responses.

My personal opinion is that the world would have been in a better state if God was a female. Therefore, we sadly have to conclude that God is male.

LoL! Olaff. This is so funny! So far we have seen arguments presented for: God is a male God has no gender (IT) God is formless Thanks for the post.

Human has a tendency to relate every unknown existence in the universe to the most common features familiar to human. Look at all those movies or pictures of Aliens. Many have hands and legs like us though we have not seen any Aliens yet (There are exceptions). Most of the spirits and ghosts again follow the same path. All because it is easy to correlate with what has to be projected. Similarly the GOd. I strongly feel that God has no form and no name. The whole universe itself is God. The creator and destroyer, humand, animals, plants, stones everything together is God. God is the ultimate energy and everything else that exists is a part of God. If God has feelings,or if you can say God is He or She then its not God but just our faith to God. that is the reason every religion has different versions of God. (This is my personal opinion Only and does not attract any responsibility to the statement)

Thank you for the question. We can not grasp God, so we can not decide whether He is of that or this gender. He is immesurably exalted above His creatures. In the old times the Word was directed to men. They had taken as their own priviledge to learn to read. Women were not even addressed, they were to be told by men what God had said in His Revealed Books. Now in this age the Bhai Faith has appeared. Woman is addressed and to be regarded as equal to men, women and girls must first of all get educated. Now we are receptive of that. And women are the first educators, of their children, so they must be educated first. The balance is still there: God is inscrutable, thus exalted above our understanding. Since you, coffeechat is a moslem I'd like to quote a verse from the Islam: (MY own translation)Greater is God than that which men impose on Him. When mankind was young, in its childhood 30 000 years ago. Woman was considered as Holy as can be seen on small figurines found in Europe through archelogical research. Most likely it was so, because men saw that women somehow could give birth to living offspring. There was indeed a suitable mystery. And small sculptures were made for worship. I think this was practical and a help to survive, cause you must care for the mother so that children would survive too. I am not saying that they worshipped God this way , but maybe they were satisfied and learned to rever unknown powers behind life. Since then we can grasp more about the nature of God, but as we understand more and more, get more and more receptive of spiritual gifts, the further God raises above us. He is the endless, without beginning and end.

Well... I feel some questions are left better not answered, since we are humans and God has not given us the knowledge to comprehend his Greatness... We know very little about God and all we know about him is through the Scriptures... No where did God mention that he is a Male or Female... Hope this answers your question... But if you are bent on knowing about his Gender then its better to put it this way(ASSUME) God to be an Extremely Powerful Energy Source... Say, can you determine the gender of Heat, Electricity, Etc???
