Yesterday I was watching a programe. They were telling that shopaholic means women. But I don't think this is true. There are lots of men also who like shopping. Some men are crazy for buying electronic goods.
We can see that basically womens take the responsiblity to buy things for the whole family. Because of this they have to buy more things then men do. That does not make them shopaholic.
Usually we here from guyes that women are crazy for shopping.
Do you think this is true? What is your opiniopn in this?

As far as I have found in my experience it is men who are worse for spending money. Although women tend to shop more they buy things which are worth less money. Men seem to always need the latest gadgets which can cost thousands of pounds.

I think you hit the nail right on the head... I think men are no different than women in their shopoholic ways.. They just don't get noticed because they buy less but spend more.. It's the men that buy all the big ticket items, while the women buy several things and only spend a 10th of the money men do..lol

Yes this is very true michell, men are worse in spending money. They don't think about the money, they just buy all what they want. And women think about the budget and go for bargain.

I don't believe that's true. I hate shopping. I do all my shopping on the internet and only for things that I need. But I am also very responsible not to go over my limits. My husband doesn't shop at all unless he has no other choice. I think it depends on the person. Man or women. I do agree tha women tend to be more of the shoppers but that is because we are the ones that take care of almost all the household needs.

That what I want to say that in more cases it is the fact that women have to do more shopping because they take care of the household need. That does not mean shopaholic.

A shopoholic would be anyone with the penchant for over spending. It is true that men do it too, however, not as much since they have the better paying jobs and such. We being more in number would also have this as a problem since we tend to try to fill a need with something other than what the need calls for. Hope this is something that is understandable for all of us.

Just another labe society want to place on people..well women I guess. I do believe there are shopoholics, but I don't think that women only hold the title...lol I don't know about that.. My brother has every electronic gadget know to man. I think he has like 3 laptops and several desktop computers, a couple of scanners, big screen tv with about 10 different remotes and surround sound, dvd recorders, players..you name it he has it and usually more than one..lol So no I don't believe being a shopoholic is just describing women..lol

YES and NO
it's really depend on personality of each one
since women will have to buy a lot of stuff for everyone,
they will know the basic price of those things.
Whenever the prices go down, women seems to shop more than men.
Guys wont really bother to pay attention to prices and qualities as much as women (that's what I think)
Guys will buy things that they need NOW for extra money, while women will buy things that they know that they will use either now or in the future when those items are on sale.
Buying often has no related to buying expensive stuff.
ALSO...
Buying useful items has no related to buying at the right prices.

Men are shopaholics for gadgets, tools, cars, car parts, car accessories, hunting gear, just to name a few things. I think we all have the potentialto abuse this privelege.

I agree that I am a shopaholic but I have two sons who are even worse than me. They are constantly checking out all the latest video games and pcs. Every time a new laptop or a better mobile phone comes on the market, they just have to buy it. My house if full of old computers, mobile phones, digital cameras, dvd players and even tvs. At least I spend most of my money on clothes or something for the home, but all these gadgets around my house drive me crazy. The worse thing about it is, that my sons don't even live with me, they just store all their unwanted junk in my house.

Well I think there is a tendancy to categorise people, and because many women do enjoy buying themselves clothes, and shoes, especially if they are a little "down", and need cheering up, then there is this theory that all women are shopaholics, and spend too much time, nnd energy on shopping, Certainly I agree that men can enjoy shopping too, but on the whole, I think it is normally the women who go out, and cheer themselves up with some "retail therapy"!

May be some women like to do shopping, but there are men also who do it a lot. So, why only call women shopaholic.

I don't believe you have to be a woman to be a shopaholic. I'm sure there are people who'd consider ME a shopaholic, at least when I get near a bookstore, or a place that sells CDs and DVDs.
I also agree that just because someone does the majority of family/household shopping... that doesn't make them a shopacholic. "Shopacholic" (at least to me) signifies someone who is completely out of control with their shopping habits-- someone who has 500 pairs of shoes, but still keeps buying them.

Men buy things upon the perceived value and will pay for the price even though it can be "expansive". Women tend to look for bargain, buy things on bargain but may not of use.
I admit that when I am on the net, I tend to pay for ebooks an that sorts. My wife will tend to buy cute water bottles for our children! And we have lot's of them at home.
In the end, both man and women also spent and shop but on different things.

yes. i agree because girls and womens they took make ups and clothes. In these days womens accessories gone up.
Generally women are more interested in shopping and buying clothes, fashion compare to men. women are the one who do shopping most. For example if you enter one shop out of 20 people 3 will be men.
90% of shops are ladies shops.

It wouldn't be fair to say shopaholic means a woman, a lot of women are not really hooked on shopping and as you said many men also are shopaholic .. I think it's more accurate to say that much more women are shopaholic than men, yes women usually do all the shopping but also more women actually enjoy it, most men think it's a heavy task when they have to do it.. but again enjoying shopping is not equal to shopaholic, much less percentage of women who are really can be defined as shopaholic ..

I hate to shop. I hate to go to malls and walk around for hours looking at the stores to find the perfect gift or article of clothing. I hate to shop. I have never enjoyed shopping. Stores always try to intice you to purchase more than you really need and think aboout it..do you really need half the stuff you purchase anyway?

Eversince the term SHOPAHOLIC has been corelated to women, for the reason that majority of the women really like to shop, and that term I think has been commonly related to shopping for clothes... don't you think? Like there are guys that are techies and they spend huge amount of money for their gadgets and they never get called shopaholic, that's because when we say shopaholic, the first thing that pops into mind are clothes.. And that is also probably why women are told to be one...

It is not just women. My husband loves the dollar stores. He has already spent 3 hours in just one store. He looks at everything. He says you never know what you might find. Trust me he has found a lot over the years and has a full house to prove it. He buys bunches cause they might not have it next time. Drives me crazy.

Some men are also into shopping. I have a female friend who wasn't into shopping like most women. Her husband would do the shopping for her instead. He buys clothes and shoes for her. Even some of her accessories were chosen by her husband. And when they go out, he would advise her on which would look better. Some guys are more into fashion than women. And can tagged as shopaholics as well.

I will never, ever be accused of being a shopaholic! I hate shopping and I always have. If my husband can't go (which he does for most things like groceries, clothes etc.), I like to know what I need, where it is in the store, get in, get it, and get out! I only have one pair of dress shoes too (and I am not even sure where they are at this moment)! I think you are right - some men do enjoy shopping as much as most women, but they just buy bigger ticket items!
