After two years of being unemployed, two years of application forms, two years of being refused, two years of feeling on the scrap heap, I finally got offered an interview and went along this morning. I was there for about 45 minutes and went home again feeling like I didn't stand a chance, and I'd only been home around 5 minutes when the phone rang.
They want me in for a one month trial starting on Thursday 1st March. I am so happy I could cry right now, after all that time someone has finally realised that experience is valuable and they are prepared to give me a chance.
So folks, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and, for once, it ain't an oncoming train - lol
How many of you have been in my position? Was it easy to get work? Have you struggled against age discrimination?

Congratulations on your new job! I have never struggled with age discrimination since I am only 27 :) I have had troubles getting work though. When I first moved to a new state it was really hard to even get an interview out of people. I don't know if it was because I was not from here or what but I never did find a permanant job. My husband did find one but he had to switch professions and start all over again at the bottom. I hope that everything goes great with your trial period. Good Luck!

Thank you for your words. Finding work is really difficult these days and after such a long time I am both excited and nervous. I am making the most of my last day of daytime access to my pc now :-)

Congratulations and well done. You are a source of inspiration to others who may think they are on the scrap heap. I sometimes feel that way, but I can always go back to teaching music again. I'm just taking a break until the bank runs dry. I hope you do really well and that you will be made permanent. Best of luck and don't lose touch with your friends here on myLot.

Thank you hun. I certainly won't be away from MyLot, I still have the evenings and weekends - lol. I feel so much better about myself now than I was over the weekend, it's amazing how much more confident I feel now.

That is fantastic for you, well done.
I am lucky in that i have never really struggled to get a job. I think I will find it hard though once I go back after my daughter is at school because by then I would have stopped worked for 5 years.
However I do some voluntary work so I'm hoping that will help me get a job.

I have struggled pretty frequently but congratulations, there certainly is a light at the end of the tunnel. I am beginning to see it as well. I just got a part-time job that I love and the training is going great when in the past I didn't think it possible since I have so many kids and so many different schedules to meet.

That is truly excellent news and gives me a lot of hope! Yes I have struggled against discrimination. For the past three years I have retrained at college to work with children, but because I am a man, no one wants to employ me! I've sent so many spec letters, application forms etc... but NOTHING. I even wrote an article in the paper about discrimination against men working with children but to no avail. I've had to give up looking now because I need a job and have to pay the bills. I am very angry about it and now I have to look for a mundane office job the kind I gave up to pursue my chosen vocation in life! I have all the qualifications and training and experience to work with children, if I was a female I would be snapped up straight away. Best wishes for your job and again well done!

I truly hope you manage to win your fight against discrimination hun. It seems unbelievable that you train and work and get your qualificatons only to have it thrown back in your face. I really hope, too, that you find exactly the right job for you. Good luck hun.

Congratulations dear. I think I answered your other post first, the one on the job. Discrimination is very difficult to overcome, as my husband and I have experienced it too. But, put it behind you, and go forward. I wish you the best happines, and may the job go well and easy for you. Good luck dear.

Congratulations! I'm delighted for you and hope you enjoy your new job and still find time to write. You are an inspiration to all.
I happened to read this an hour before an interview, and yes, I've been struggling against age discrimination. This is interview number two with a woman who is young enough to be my daughter. At least she wants to speak with me again.

Keep fighting age dicrimination hun, you are worth it. It sounds like you have a good chance of getting that job if they are prepared to give you another interview, I spent so long just trying to get a chance of an interview. Good luck and keep on pushing.

Congratulations on your new job, may your one month trial whizz past and may you be offered the job permanently at the end of that period :)
I was made redundant about 5 years ago at very short notice due to the company going under. I was working in a HR management role and basically had to make others redundant all week and make myself redundant too. I was out of work for a few months and found that I couldn't get a job in the same field without getting a professional HR qualification. I enrolled at college for evening classes and was going two nights a week for a month before I got a full time job. I was getting really worried as I'd been working since I was 17 and had never been in this situation and had to pay my mortgage and bills obviousyly. I hated going to sign on at the job centre as the staff were pretty clueless and kept suggesting jobs to me with manager in the title but which I had no experience of! I was never so glad as when I got the job offer and knew I wouldn't have to go back to that horrid job centre again as a "client"!

I agree completely with your comments about the Job Centre. In all the time I was signing on, I kept asking about courses in the area to increase my skills and my chances of getting work. They hadn't a clue and in all that time they could only offer me a two day course on floristry. I hated going into the job centre and signing on, I felt like I was invisible, one of those faceless masses that come and go. Thank you for your valued comments

It can be extremely frustrating and disheartening when you can't get a job. But, as they say, "It's always darkest before the dawn." Good luck and congrats!
