How Do You Make Your Skin Soft?

As I age, I find that my skin is not as soft as it once was. I have found that sugar scrub helps to soften it. It is very expensive to purchase. I paid over $15.00 for about a cup of sugar scrub. I only did this once before I decided that I could make it myself and save money.
Homemade sugar scrub is as effective as commercial
I was not Aware that sugar cane produces glycolic acid, one of the natural alpha hydroxy acids that exfoliates the skin until I did some research. When I found out all the benefits of sugar, I was immediately made up his recipes.
Sugar Scrub
Ingredients
equal parts of white cane sugar and vegetable glycerin to moisten the sugar (I used olive oil since I was out of vegetable and it worked just as well)
Asmall amounts of aloe vera gel, vitamin C crystals, or anything healing that dissolves in water I just opened a coupld vitamin C up and used it.
1 or two drops of essential oil if desired (orange and lavender work really well) I just now made some and did not use any essential oil. The essential oil does make it smell nice but it is not necessary to make it work.
Combine the ingredients in a bowl. Scoop some of the scrub onto your hand and massage gently onto your skin for a minute (the scrub will actually tighten onto your skin like a masque). Leave on for 3 to 4 minutes before rinsing.
Let me warn you in advance that you'll want to use this sugar scrub on your entire body. I started on my face and soon found that my skin felt so soft that the skin on my neck felt like sandpaper, so I used it everywhere. I do not recommend using it on fresh shaven legs or underarms. I did not shave the nights that I used this.
What kind of things do you do to make your skin soft?

This sounds like a really cool recipe to try. I know my skin gets so dry in the winter months where I live and it seems like there's not enough lotion in the world to help. I'll have to give this a try. Where do you come up with all of these great recipes that I've seen you post. You have so many great things posted that I want to try.

I was raised poor. We made or raised everything that we had. So I learned to make my own mixes and such. I love to cook and I do not post anything that I have not personally tried. I am a county cook. So none of my recipes will be fancy but they will have a lot of taste. If you notice, I recipes all uses simple ingredients.

This is more great information for me. I am always trying to find something to soften my skin. For some reason as the years go by my skin seems to get rougher and I always have a complex about that. I don't like to shake anyones hand as I know that my own hands are not as soft as they once were.

I have made my own sugar scrub as well. I just used sugar and a cheaper body wash from the dollar store. Just mix the two together until you get the consistency you like. You could also use sea salt and sugar. There are lots of recipes on the internet for scrubs.
The other thing I do is put baby oil in a bottle with a sprayer top and just spray some on right after my shower. If you spray it on while stil damp it works very well to soften your skin. Mineral oil would be the same thing and you could add some fragrance to it if you wanted to.

I too like sugar scrub but I am addicted to Bath & Body Works Spearmint Eucaliptus Sugar Scrub. It smells amazing. I also use Kiehl's Creme de Corps. It is really pricey but worth every penny. I have super dry skin and love these both.

I like your idea because I once bought a sugar scrub and it did work wonders but was really expensive ... I will have to try yours
As for me, to prevent my skin from getting too fry after a bath, I always had salt and a tablespoon of olive oil to my bath while drawng it... it really does help make the skin softer ... but I assume that just like me you probably don't take bathes that often ... I usually only have a bath when I need to rewad myself and it helps me unind and relax ... but it is like every 3 months or so LOL and more in winter ...
but don't worry people I do have showers though !!!!!!!! :P
Thanks again

I will have to try this and also make some up for my mom. Dry rough skins seems to run in my family so my grandmother used Skin So Soft bath and body spray from Avon and my mother and me use it as well because if we don't we have alligator skin..lol It works great and I only buy it when on sale to get a good price and since a little does go a long way it last for several months not bad when you can get a 24 oz. bottle on sale for $6.99 or less. But since I love trying new things with things I have around my house I will deffinately try this..but I will make sure to rinse very well since yellow jackets are out and about this time right now.lol

I moisturise my skin day in and out..lol I moisturise as soon as I'm out of the shower which helps keep my skin smooth and really really soft. But your sugar scrub sounds good too, but village I really don't think I have the patience to make my own scrub...lol Will keep this for later in case I change my mind:)

I have been using Apricot Scrub since I was a teenager. I can never live without it now. I always make sure I have a constant supply of it. Thank God the scrub is quite easy to get, I just go to the Guardian Pharmacy or the Watson's and I can purchase a tube with just a price of under MYR20 per tube. I use it daily on my face because my skin needs to have a fresh scrub every day. Using it, my skin feels soft and acne free.

Add more moisture to the skin to increase hydration
Improve the skin’s ability to hold more moisture. Help the skin absorb more moisture deep within the skin’s surface. All JOHNSON’S products improve your skin’s ability to absorb moisture and keep it longer, so you have beautifully soft skin all day long.

Hmmmm I never used this scrub to make my skin soft. I just use general body lotion to soften my skin. During this winter I had bad skin ever. May be I should care little more of my skin.

For the almost the same expense I go to Wal-Mart, Kroger or Rite Aid and buy a tube or bottle of Eucerin body lotion where a little goes a long way all over your body. In fact, it probably costs less than all the ingredients you have to muster for your scrub and will last longer. If you have severe itchy or caked dry skin, get the Eucerin Calming Creme.
Remember... being frugel does not necessarily mean you have to make it!

I have tried Eucerin and it does not work for me. I have spent alot of money on good brand lotions and creams and this scrub works better for me than any of the lotions

Always clean your face with a gentle, creamy liquid cleanser. Avoid using soap — it dries the skin and leaves it looking very stretchy. Also avoid using your hands when you apply cleanser because the dirt and germs from your hands could get into the pores of your skin. Instead use cotton to dab the cleanser on your skin. Make sure you rinse with lukewarm water because hot water can aggravate the skin and inflame capillaries.

This is certainly a lot of useful info. I´m going to give it a try.
For a face scrub I´ve used ordinary kitchen salt for some time but I had to stop because my skin was bright red afterwards.
I buy organic facial scrubs now but they are far too expensive for my liking.
To make my skin soft I use honey for the face. Needs to be left on for about 5 minutes and washed off with luke warm water. When my skin is really dry I put some olive oil on, and take the excess off with a tissue.

Johnsons baby oil added to a bath is very good for moisturising skin.
or
aromatherapy oil in a bath but you must remember to mix it with a carrier oil. You can mix up your own and experiment with the different types of oils available.
just remember that you will need to clean the bath afterwards as it will make it very slippy.
