I hear from a lot of people that they were forced by their parents to take the degree that they have or had in college. Some would want to be engineers, yet took up nursing because their parents wanted them to do so. I am lucky that I was not placed in such a predicament. Did you have the same experience?

When I was in high school I was taking business courses, that is the direction I wanted to go in. Then in my junior year, I had an accident that kept my whole hand in a cast for almost 3 months, and I had to have rehab to get so I could even write again (it was the hand I used to write and all.) My parents changed my major to nursing studies and I was told that I should go to nursing school after I graduated. I was not consulted, and I had no choice! They thought that was a better career for me. I'm not resentful, I LOVED being a nurse all those years, plus it was very useful when taking care of all of them as they got older and more ill. I have never given up my love for the business world and am now doing that as I have always dreamed of. I made sure that when my girls were talking about school and college that it was totally their decision and not mine. I would never dream of doing that to them, their careers are their choice and no one elses.

I guess I was "lucky" in that sense. After my 6 years in primary school, all further decisions were made by myself. My parents left everything to me so I have nobody to blame if things go wrong (but myself). :/ So I decided which secondary school to go to, which junior college, which university, which course, etc. But the reason for me continuing my education is an unspoken pressure from my parents. All parents want their children to be educated so if not to make them happy, I might have dropped out long ago.

I wasn't really forced but my mo often made such comments on how great it would be to have a child who took the same course like them (my parents). I told them that I like to take up HRM and work in a hotel but my mom smirked and said, "you want to be a waitress or dishwasher in a hotel?" So eventually I took the same course as theirs (accountancy),guess what I hated it and I'm still not a college graduate until now. It's hard to force something to someone especially when it comes to the career choice, because eventually that person will be unhappy in their career if they don't like it.

This didn't happen to me in fact the opposite is true. My Dad forced me to choose all my GCSE's, A levels and degree course myself so that I couldn't go back and blame him later if I felt it was the wrong decision.
