I have three very different dogs. KC will be 2 in August....Beagle/Jack Russell mix. (19 lbs) Bailey is 8 months and is a Basset Hound. (40 lbs) Lilly is a mini Dachshund and is only 4 months old. (3 lbs) And they are the cause of my stress when the kids are at school!!! Oh heck! Who am I kidding? They stress me even when the kids get home too! Lilly does not like Bailey when she is on my bed or lap. If she just hears the tinking of his tags, she turns into this mini Kujo! The only thing missing is the foaming of the mouth. Give her some Pop Rocks, I am sure that would make her even more convincing. (Note...I am not giving her Pop Rocks) The weather is nice and I like to open my windows now....but Bailey has to stick his big head in the window and bark at the neighborhood. once he gets started...Lilly and KC has to join in! Needless to say, no matter how many times I drag Bailey's big butt out of the window...he keeps going back. And no matter how many times I try to stop mini Kujo...she will not stop her rabies act! So, any advice on how to get them to stop????

Ok, why not the pop rock? Kidding. it would be funny though. I had this problem too when I lived at my parents house. I used somethings called bitter apple. It is a spray you put in their mouths (won't hurt them a bit) and it is a very bitter tasting spray. It really REALLY works. I used to have a 70 pound alsation, and a 8 pound pekinese (did not spell right LOL) and a 56 pound coyote (yes it was one) and they all got on every ones nerves. So I bought the stuff and would spray in the the little ones mouth when she yapped, sprayed in the 70 pd one when he tried to bolt out of the house or chased the 5 cats we had and sprayed in the 56 pd one for all of the above. You know what? It really worked, well almost completely. When you are working with a stupid dog IE the little pek. you run into problems. She took longer, but she learned. Hope this helps.

You would spray it in their mouths? Where do I get some of this spray? Could I use a spray that I could make at home? Like watered down vinegar? Vinegar is bitter but would not hurt them....right? Really, where could I find this spray???? That sounds awesome!!!

The spray works well on Labs, too ... but not so much on old toy poodles. Ok, it worked well on two labs, but not on the toy poodle.

I better keep a close eye on this topic and check out the website for barking dogs that someone gave you. I have five dogs who bark at nothing. They need no reason at all. I swear they hear the leaves falling. My cat will sneeze and the puppy will bark. But I try to look on the bright side, every time they bark I have to get off my lazy butt and see if anyone is at the door. So I think of this as my exercise.lol.

A soccer ball was just sitting there in the yard yesterday while I was cooking on the grill....and Lilly seemed to think that it was a threat! She just kept jumping and barking at it...but never touching it to make it move! LOL I wished I had my video camera. That soccer ball was just really taunting poor little Lilly. LOL

My dogs all know when I ask if they want a whipping that the rolled up newspaper is coming out. After a couple of whippings they know what the phrase means and all I have to say is...do you want a whipping??? They stop and look at me and slowly walk away. I raise mini dachshunds. It sounds like your Lily wants to be the alpha dog. It's so funny the big attitude these little guys have. I have two puppies left from last years litter I kept, one intentionally because she is partially blind (double dapple) and the other mostly to keep her company. The blind one is the dominate one. I never would have imagined that happening. Good luck with the barking! I know how annoying that can be. Attaching a picture of puppies for you.

It seems like many dog behavioral problems stem from boredom and lack of exercise. Beagles especially need a lot of running around time or they become crazy. I would suggest making sure each dog has enough exercise time daily.

Have you ever watched Ceasar Milan "the dog whisperer"? Ceasar's answer to almost any problem is a long walk. Apparently a 45 minute to a hour walk makes the dog fall into a calm submissive state where he's more prone to listen. You can usually catch Ceasar's show on the animal channel or go to his website and by a DVD that shows training sessions of some of his more challenging cases. Good luck!

Ceasar's show is also on the National Geographic Channel if you don't get Animal Planet. He is the best! I really wish I had known about his techniques when I had a dog. I had a sheltie, and he was a barker too!

There is this spray called Bitter Apple Spray...seriously after you squirt it in their mouth when they bark they will stop when you show them the bottle. Another trick is throw some change in a bowl with lid and shake it at them when they do something bad. It startles them and when they see it in your hand they stop.

Thanks! I will go to PetsMart! The bitter Apple spray was mentioned above but I couldn't find where to get it. WalMart shows it online...but when I went there this morning, they didn't have it. But my partner works on the other side of town where PetsMart is. I will ask him to look to see if they have it! Thanks!!!

Hi Brokentia, Although I've never used one, bark collars are available. A small receiver is placed on the dog's collar, which can be operated by a remote control to give the dog a little shock when it's barking. It's designed for behavior modification. Meaning, that you wouldn't use it permanently. Rather, the intention is to teach your dog that incessant barking is not acceptable. After the dog makes the correlation between the shock and you saying "no bark" (or however you respond verbally), the collar would no longer be necessary. I tend to be 'old school' about dog training, so I have no personal experience with bark collars. However, it sounds like you may have some territorial issues, and as another poster mentioned -- maybe some bored doggies. I propose a possible solution that may work on both issues simultaneously. When Bailey initiates a 'bark fest', try throwing a toy into the middle of the room to attract Bailey's attention. Then, if you can use one or two more toys to draw in KC and Lilly, you may find that the three will occupy themselves with the toys, and play amongst themselves ... leaving you in relative peace & quiet.

I think that you should try the Pop Rocks only add some caffeniated soda! Just kidding (I think!) LOL. Can you put the dogs outside in a rotation? Put Bailey out for awhile, then mini Kujo? Oh, and I'm very jealous that you're sitting around with your windows open ... I look outside and there's 5 foot snow drifts!

The only ways I know to stop a dog's barking would be either removing the ability with surgery or placing a muzzle on the dog. The dogn's main drive is to protect territory. Barking is hard wired in!

Electric collars can do the job

Simple dog training techniques can stop dog barking. Harsh methods, such as the use of e-collars are ineffective. http://www.www.how-to-stop-aggressive-dog-behavior.com
