This is not a typical, campy, James Bond movie!I watched it today. In the 1st 5 minutes, it is rubbed into our faces exactly what 007 is...a killer/assassin for hire...no holds barred...no romanticism...just cold...and that left me a little uncomfortable. Add to that my favorite pet peeve in the movies...Judy Dench, the head of M...uses God's name as a cuss word...I just hate that! Anyway, once that is out of thw way...in just the first 10 minutes, I was breathless at the incredible action and the physical requirements of the actors involved. Their athleticism is incredible and some of the fight scenes are in unexpected places with strength and agility required that leaves you gasping "What! Man!" Still, we have the great clothes and the beautiful women and the good guys versus the bad guys and a wonderful plot and story. A little reparte thrown in on the way to Casino Royale and everything is satisfied. Include delicious and unexpected plot turns, a unique torture scene, several surprises, and just when you think the mission is over, more twists and surprises. Shake it all up, and voila! a brand new, uncompromising 007...Bond...James Bond!

There are some changes that I think some people won't necessarily like, but all in all I thought it was a great movie. The intro was almost typical Bond fashion, but Daniel Craig allows a grittier chase scene. It seems like he's on edge the entire time, not as relax as some other actors have looked in similar chase scenes. After this, we get into the core of Bond and Daniel Craig's abilities. We can see that Craig isn't the smooth guy that Pierce Brosnan or Sean Connery was, but at the same time he added a little bit of attitude to the role. I also thought some of the other action was great and gave us great insight to the way Bond is in the other movies (this movie is meant to be the first in the series). The poker scenes were great to me, high drama and good realism (i'm a big poker fan and player, so I appreciated that a lot). all in all, I think everyone should at least give it a shot.

Wow! James Bond movies are a guilty pleasure of mine. I always watch them whenever I have the chance. I haven't seen this one yet, but after reading what you wrote I will definitely be checking it out! I have heard a lot of different mixed reviews on this one and so I was somewhat hesitant to see it. I actually thought that I would wait for it to come out on DVD, instead of seeing it in the theater. After hearing about all of the action scenes, I suppose I may end up regretting that decision. Thanks to you I will be watching this movie this weekend. I suppose that I will have to buy some popcorn and get shaken (not stirred LOL) to grab a copy of this movie and see it for myself. Thanks again for the insight on this one. :)

I used to avoid all James Bond movies, as he was so very cavalier about a series of women.. a perk and commodity for him.. but some of the later James' Bond movies I've actually watched and they weren't too bad.. I still prefer what's his name tho.. Though he's much more attractive as a white haired older guy! Why can't I think of his name! As far as assasins for hire, I think that is a better idea than some others, but we have to be politically correct no matter how many innocent lives it costs..

Sean Connery of course! And we all realize that to fight terrorists or whatever, we have those black ops teams and those secret assualt teams no one is supposed to know about, so I guess for the UK it's 007?

I agree completely. I'm a huge Bond fan and was a little concerned when they announced Daniel Craig as the new 007. Like you, 5 minutes in, I was sold. The fights look real, very gritty, and the torture scene made me literally limp out of the theater...LOL. Can't wait to see what they are going to do for the next one.

I agree about Craig as an actor. Layer Cake is one of my fave movies

Craig is an excellent actor. I hope that anyone who hasn't seen him before will check him out in earlier movies. Whatever the plot of the next one is, I'm sure that Bond is going to be a more closed-in type of person, and will avoid falling in love.

A nice little review, though I do find it kind of bizarre that the violence doesn't bother you, but you complain about a curse word. To me, the Bond films are boring and silly, but this one was very different. Tough and gritty. I agree about the athleticism. The guy Bond was chasing early on was just incredible, and I actually liked the fact that Bond was a real klutz in comparison.

I can turn my head or shut my eyes if the violence gets too intense, but I really hate taking the Lord's name in vain. I can usually watch PG or PG-13 movies most of the time, but hubby does screen them for me. LOL I don't like too much blood and guts and if there is too much language, forget it...also don't like too much s*xual innuendo...I'm getting really picky in my old age. LOL

Well, I have yet to see this one yet, but will probably Rent it sometime soon just to check it out. I am not sure what I will think since I liked some of the older Bonds the best, but my curiousity is peaked to check this one out for sure.

*LOL*...you should be a movie critic. Yes, Judy Dench was obviously absent on oscar night. I wonder what happened. I would be pissed if someone made a joke like ellen did at my expense. In any case, I'm glad you finally enjoyed your 007 movie!

I've never been able to get into the Bond movies ... I read the first few books as a teenager and enjoyed them .. but was disappointed with the first movie .. the movies all seem far too much of a send up of the books for my liking ... some good special effects but the movies are nowhere near as good as they are hyped up to be ...

I really loved this latest James Bond flick. I'm probably going actually buy the DVD. In the old Bond books, James Bond was not that good looking or sophisticated. He was almost cold-hearted, and he had scars on his face, and didn't smile much. This new James Bond was closer to the real Bond character in the old books. The ending did go on and on..just when I thought it was over, I found out it wasn't. All in all, I loved it.

I also liked this last Bond movie very much, the Bond character is much more vicious, and presents a number of flaws uncharacteristic in the previous Bond movies, the actions sequences are much more lean and mean, whitout the cartonish element so present in the past, this and much more all added makes me very ancious for the next instalment of the Bond series, last hope they stay in same note.

Seriously I started taking notice of Daniel Craig since Tomb Raider...so it is not surprising that he was great in it!

If all the women don't fall for this Bond then I will want to see it. A torture scene, cool! I can overlook the curse. I prefer the intensity of what his job is and requires. Never did like the guy gets girl aspect. You have encouraged me to see this one.

That is a terrific little review. I have been wanting to see the movie, but my husband is reluctant because he is a huge Bond fan and he is afraid that thwy will be changing who Bond is. I think Bond could use soem changing up and it sounds like they do that in this movie. I really like action movies, so the fact that this is full of action is a great thing for me. i will be renting it soon and I think I will enjoy it, but I fear that my husband will be disapointed. Oh well, you can't win them all.

I love Eva Green, especially in the movie Kingdom of Heaven.
