Will you help a beggar?

Today on my way home, I saw a beggar who was very dirty and in rags. It was raining at the moment but he had nothing to shelter himself from the rain. I gave him my umbrella and shared another umbrella with my friend. My friend said jokingly that perhaps the beggar stood in the rain on purpose to gain others' sympathy. I didn't believe him, however we decided to go back and see. To my surprise, the beggar was still there, standing in the rain. But I couldn't find my umbrella. I felt cheated.
Will you help a beggar? What will you do if such a thing happens to you?

what if jesus came back as a beggar? to deny someone in need is to deny christ? I think there will be some who lie and are trying to take advatage but there are also many with real needs. I would help the person.

You are very kind and I believe you did the right thing. Don't worry about the umbrella. Most folks have too many. For some reason I get lots of umbrellas at Christmas and you have given me an idea on how to get rid of them. lol!
We see people holding signs saying "Will work for food." So we go home and make them a sandwich and take it to them. Giving them what they need seems to be the right thing but I have reservations about giving money.
You know, the beggar, in turn, could have given the umbrella to a small homeless or orphan child who was getting drenched. Kindness begets kindness. :)

I commend you for what you did. You got my admiration and respect.
It doesn't matter if the person trick you or not. God sees the desire of your heart and you intended to do something good. The only opinion that counts the most is His opinion of you.
Even when people would lie, cheat, or trick you. Do good anyway.

I absolutely agree with you, it is a matter of what is in your heart. People are supposed to do things because it is what is in his/her heart.
As to the poster, why take it personal? You did your part, you helped someone in need, forget it and move on. Sometimes helping people is warranted sometimes it is not. The point is you cannot second guess helping someone, not if it is what's in your heart. Grow some thicker skin and keep being the person that you are or want to be. This post just inspired my first post.

IT was very poor that you have to come through a situation like that. naturally beggers do like that only because they are begging to live. Insted of working.Insted of umberla if you ahve given hi an 100 $ then also he might have stayed there begging.

I am a good samaritan. I love helping the less fortunate. It is just sad to know that there are others who take advantage of your kindness. Usually, I give food to beggars, not money or material things. But sometimes, I also give them used clothing.

it depends.. if a beggar looks like he can still handle himself, meaning, he can still look for a decent living, well, i certainly am not helping him. and also i don'tlike to help the blind accompanied with a healthy partner. but some beggars really look helpless which makes you think that he really has no other choice but to beg, then i have some spare coins in my pocket for him. tadaaaa!!!!

I agree with this, if that beggar is strong enough to get a job then it might not be a good idea to throw out some coins.

you did what you think is right, and I know you have a very kind heart for others. now if he cheated you that does not mean you did not help him its just he is the one who will carry the burden of cheating people soon.
maybe he needs more than just an umbrella, just pray for his soul

In my country, there are many beggars, especially in the big cities. Many of them are disabled. At first, when I saw those beggars,I'm feel very sorry about that and will give some money to them. But when I saw this more times,I felt cheated.I started to hate those beggars who with a good body but still want to gain sympathy. But I still will help a beggar who really need help.

i will surely help a beggar.....i guess they are people born with a curse...we need to help each them and at least give whatever is possible from our side....after all we all are human-beings...its humanitarian act which is a good habit....but at the same time...beware of some beggars with attitude....but dont go to an extent of giving an umbrella or any of ur other belongings which is essential for....donating is a good deed but not at the cost of ur misery....

May be the beggar gave your umbrella to his fellow beggar, who knows right? I, too, am very low hearted. I easily feel ruth for those impoverished family i see on streets. It just melt my heart whenever i see those kids who, at young age, are working when they should be at school studying; and those babies drinking water instead of milk; and those grandmas and grandpas sleeping along side of the streets enduring the cold nigh wind when they should be in a good shelter to avoid illness; and those families who are sharing a plate of rice and salt as their viand. It struck me most during Christmas when everyone's expected to have gifts.

honestly,i do not give money and sympathy to a street begger.in my city, government have builded some institution to help those person, but ,unfortunely, few beggers are willing to get the government's help, why?through some investigation,i got the reason.it is becouse those beggers are not real begger, they made begering as their way to make money ,some of them even richer than others.so when i see a begger i allways persuade them to get the government's help.

i will if the beggar is really a true one. you would sense if he is a fake or not. but then, if you gave something for the fake beggar, God is the one who will give that to you in return.

When I find a beggar in the streets I really feel pity to them. I just can't explain my mixed feelings towards their situation. That is why I always give alms to them if I have money. The government should make an action about this for the better of their life.

Yes, sometimes I do it.
When I see one beggar on the street, I always give some money to him, I feel that he need the money.
But now, on the street, there are a lot of scam, many people is cheat people for money, they don't really is a beggar, they just do it for money, I cannot tolorate it, and I hate it.

What you did is still good works because your HEART wanted to help and you felt pity for the beggar though you were cheated because he was only pretending.
I would also feel bad when it happens to me. That's why when i help a beggar i give him/her food such as bread or cookies when i have some. I do not give MONEY or other material things, WHY? Well in my country there are a lot of beggars, some are owned by syndicates which the government are trying to catch.
Some syndicate even kidnap young kids and old people to make them look like beggars, hurting them so that they will have the Fear to leave. That's why i dont give Money or material things rather it is best to give them Food to eat.
Thanks for sharing that to mylot. :P
