Do you think that bad grammer and internet slang on blogs and in instant messaging makes the writer seem less intelligent?

I think its ok on some things, but I personally dont really use it, except maybe lol. I have a friend that I instant message quite often and because we type so fast to each other she will make a mistake. I always point them out to her for a laugh, she calls me miss spellchecker now. Sometimes I will make a mistake and send her another message to correct it before she can point it out. I don't know why but it almost seems to bother me when I can see a spelling mistake.

I think there's a big difference between typing out something for an online source (like a post or blog) and using IMO or LOL or something like that. The problem that I think is bigger is when people use those tags, and even the text messaging language (u,r,4) in their business, professional or academic environments where it is totally inappropriate. I know of adults who can ONLY spell this way - they were never encouraged to learn to actually spell anything. That definately makes anything they have to say be less worth reading to me.

See, this is a difficult question... in instant messaging, I don't think it's that important as long as there is understanding between the two people conversing. with the familiarity of two people, grammar and slang don't play a big role. with a blog, it's more difficult because you want to have your own style, but you have to appeal to a audience, especially if you have a blog for money. if it's only for your friends, it might not be as important, but you want to have a blog or website that is easy to read. with slang or bad grammar, that might turn other people awat.

I agree with what you are saying. I know I have certain friends that I take huge short cuts in 'proper' grammer when I'm talking on instant messenger. And then there are others that I can't take those kind of short cuts because they wouldn't get what it was that I was trying to say. It is definately subject to the level of understanding when it comes to IM.

Bad grammar generally means lack of education or English as a second language. Internet slang usually means someone fairly young. In both cases, if it's a blog, I'm not likely to bother reading. I don't do instant messaging, but whether it would bother me would depend on how hard it was to read and whether I was really interested in talking with that person. I judge intelligence by the content of what a person says, not usually by how they say it, but intelligence and being able to write well generally go together.

I certainly think so .I know I am not perfect with my grammar but some of these people are unbelievable.Sometimes the spelling or the slang will be so bad,I have trouble understanding what is going on

When slang and bad grammer is used on a blog ,it might give a wrong impression about the author and his or her command on the language and consequently might discourage the reader but when used in messengers ,it doesn't refelct much on the person's intelligence as using abbreviations and slang is common in messengers and every passing day more and more abbreviations are being floated. So,I don't see it improving when it comes to the messengers.

Thanks!!! It's a pic of my cat when she was a baby. She loved chasing the mouse pointer around the screen! And I totally agree with you about messengers always using abbreviations and slang... it is a platform that feeds into quick communication and shortcuts with language.

Not really. I actually think that it's cool and saves time both when reading and writing it!

I think that bad grammar and internet slang is a form of less intelligence. Bad grammar is present maybe because some people might not be good at English or English writing. Also, Internet slang is acceptable. Less intelligence is not measured in this way I guess.

It's about time you got back to posting :)) You know I think the internet has made us all sloppy typers. Watching my son use IM's I have found that even he uses new abbreviations that I do not understand. I have started making him type them out correctly, with the consequence being if he does not then I will not let him on-line. This might seem a bit harsh but he is just really learning how to type, and I want him to learn the right way and use it before bad habits are so ingrained that they are hard to break when it comes time for serious typing.

not necessarily. grammar may be just because english is not their first language. in either case, they could be fast typers also.i know i flub spelling sometimes when i'm typing really fast.

Good point about the spelling when typing fast. I have to admit I do the same!

Generally no, I don't. I use text slang a lot because it's faster or easier. Internet slang is the same way. With the voice of a blog being that of an informal conversation than an 'actual writing', for lack of a better term. In my blogs, or rants as I call them, I swear if I feel it, abbreviate, use internet slang, whatever just flows out because it is what I really am and feel. That is the greatest thing about the blog explosion; people actually throw themselves onto a webpage and there they are. I'm sure you're gonna run into the people who say writing is sacred and it should be done properly, but that's bull. Have fun and be yourself when you blog.

Well, I avoid internet slang unless I am on an IM wherein I do fall into it. Ok, I fall into it a lot actually, and being a nurse and being used to having an abreviation for everything, makes it a bit easier for me. Now I am terribly bad if I am texting you on my phone. I don't think I spell out one word of a sentence. What a pain! but seriously, I think we are to the point where it does not say anything about intelligence, in fact some of it is almost like code.

Depending on the context, yes. There are times when I really don't want to type out "in my opinion," and in casual discussion IMO is a widely known, and perfectly acceptable substitute for the phrase. In anything formal, I think the use of internet slang tends to degrade my view of the person. Bad use of grammar tends to make me think less of a person - I do realize this as a bit of a falsehood though. In reality, use of slang or poor use of grammar, have nothing to do with intelligence - they tend to be linked toward education and personal taste. Just because someone has bad grammar or uses internet slang does not mean that they are or are not intelligent - that can be determined through what they are saying, and how they respond to arguments...
