Driver License to Buy Cold Medicine?

United States
March 22, 2007 7:20am CST
I saw something on Fox News that I found a bit disturbing. It seems that there is a new hand held device in pharmacies that will scan a driver's license when cold medicine is purchased. This is supposed to keep track of how many times a person buys cold medicine. This is an effort to watch buying patterns in case people are buying large amounts which drug users/sellers use to make meth. While I understand the need to watch the use of this, what about personal privacy? Could this be yet another attempt to gain access to personal information by the government?

They also check your drivers license for cough syrup now because the kids are abusing the dextromothoraphan for a cheap high. There are even mixed drink recipes now that include cough syrup as an ingredient for that extra kick.

I think that we some time get very paranoid about the government getting too much information. Sometime we have to give up something to get something and that is the case here.

I'm not sure that is such a good idea.
