I heard that words often. Sometime they are proud of it, but sometime grieve because they got fired from the job.
Honestly, I personally can't understand why people would work at the same place for so long time. I prefer working maximum 2 years and then move out in other job for another 1 or 2 years, or even establishing my own company. I love leaning new things. I can't stand to stay in the same place, I mean what would you learn from 20 years of working at the same place compared to 20 years working in 10 companies?
Well, that's just me and my thought...
How about you? Would you share me?

I teach high school students and I enjoy doing it. I have been at my current school for 20 years. I like it and the students seem to like it. They know what to expect from me because of past students. In fact, there are students at my school whose parents I also had as students! :) For me it is not the job security that has made me stay and I am not afraid of change. In fact I try to make changes each year at my school and in my classroom otherwise I would get bored. I enjoy not only the students but my colleagues that I work with. For me it has been great! However, I do not see anything wrong with moving to a different job every 2 years. And I think it is great that every one has the freedom to do that in our country. These are my thoughts.

Hmm, It's a nice job to be a teacher..
Maybe I won't feel bore being a teacher. I will meet new people every year. I watch a TV series "Head of the class" in the 90's. I like it, it's a teacher figure I want. In my country, teachers consider their job just as a job, they have no responsibility about what they taught.
I bet you will have easier life from the alumnus's help. I mean, some of them may be a great people and some is just ordinary people.

This is a subjective thread.
I love what I do (I'm a programmer). I've been at the same job three years, prior to that I was aiding in startups. I love what I do so I love my job, I don't have a need to change because I do keep on top of technology and the latest happs / trends thanks to the Internet and a company that doesn't mind aiding in training if need be.
As others have pointed out, job security, benefits. But my reason is simply, I love what I do.

Don't you ever think to open your own IT company ? I mean you can make software as you like, instead of following the company's vision.
You can sell it through the internet. Maybe you can make a program that can make mylot as easy as messaging (YM, AIM), I mean without opening a browser, like Trillian maybe.. You can sell it to mylot, maybe it will worth $5.000, and for user you can ask $0.05 fee each month, so with 80.000 population you will get $4.000 a month. How is it sound ?

you have a point but i think because of todays competition is hard to let go of a job that you think you ahve the security.
its really nice to know many things from different work but the job secutity is what is at stake and i guess its not really that practical to get out of a job just to learn new things.

Yes, the job finding competition is getting more and more hard. I don't knot is it just me, but I found ob easily. I choose the job that I feel I'm gonna have a lot of fun there, or a job I may grow my passion there. And in the interview I just talk about how I'm interest working there, I never mentioned anything about me. I guess the companies love to accept people who have same vision as theirs..

I think that one really learns more working at different places. But this is only possible till one is single coz later on we are fixed in different responsibilities. And then waiting for something new to happen is not that happening. But yes if the jobs are that much at your disposal then why not.

Yes, I just realize that constant changing of job can only happen if we are single. I never thought of that, isha_friend. It's true...
Thank you to remind me my friend

Some possible reasons why ppl stick to their jobs for many years:
1) stability of job
2) good job propect
3) good and understanding employer
4) good pay & great perks
5) get along well with collegues in present co/ fear of rejection in new co
6) fear of adaptation in a new company
7) uncertainty of job scope in new company
8) fear of trying new roles in a new environment
9) satisfaction of acheivement in present co/ bond for the co has been developed over the years. probably developing a sense of bond with the company and ppl working there or even the environment

Nice points you have there...
I like it, but those are the things I avoid.
Well, we know that we can never made people to understand us.
I have been in a comfort zone too long, it's like I've been sitting in my favorite couch for too long, and when I stand up I just realize that it was an ugly one. And when I go to a furniture shop I found that another couch is better looking and more comfortable.
Some people is satisfy, yes it's true sshazie. It's the thing that made them blind. And I don't want to...

In today's world it is about the insurance and the benefits and the retirement. I have enjoyed working for many different businesses over the years and I have lived in many places. Now that I am approaching retirement age I have to consider the benefits. I understand how you feel because I felt that way too. Oh, to stay young forever and never have to worry about things like retirement.

While it's admirable to think of starting your own company and such the truth of the matter is it's not something you just up and do. Spending years at a job means #1 that you establish a work ethic and grow with the company. #2, you also establish a retirement plan, hopefully, that most companies will pay into, etc. and have insurances. A job is more then a place to go. It is a means of learning the ropes, moving up the ladder, helping a company to grow and growing with that company and also establishing contacts. You don't open up a company with $100 or a week's pay!
What I cannot tolerate is people who work at a company for 20 years and get complacent. They have no desire to change anything and just want to put in their time. There should always be a pride about your work that involves change and upkeep.

I understand how you view it. It is a wonderful idea as long as the company doesn't ry to replace you before your time with someone younger and for less money. It is now becoming the norm for many companies to view their employees as only numbers and expenses. I feel for those who gave so much of their time and then got treated like yesterday's garbage. Companies need to take pride in the employee that gives 100% and cares.

I agree with loujac3. Recently, companies choose young worker which they are more skillful, fresh and willing to pay at the minimum.
So it's the point that you may establish your retirement plan, but what would happen if they fire you first ?
Establish a work ethic. Yes. But the ethic of the work's area. I mean if you are in a contractor company, your ethic is limited only with a contractor atmosphere. How about the ethic of selling, marketing, or negotiating ?
It is better to grow your own company than growing other's company, right ?

I've worked at a few different places, and most of them I've loathed. Now that I finally found a place I really like to work, I'd like to stay with that company.
There are several reasons why.
1) I like the people I work with.
2) Good benefits, which get even better over time. Employer match for my 401(k), more vacation time the longer I work there, a retirement plan, etc.
3) My company has values that I am proud of. Lots of support for charity, a huge diversity movement, constant awards for being "the best place to work for women, or for minorities, or for GLBT folks, or for parents" etc etc. That means something to me.
It might seem like working in one company for a long time would limit learning opportunities, but working for one company doesn't mean holding the same position all that time. I work in a bank, and as a teller I am learning certain things. My next step from that position could be in many different directions, and my career could take a lot of different paths within the same company.

If you are working in the same company for a long time , You can achieve a good position in that company.
But if you are changing your company , you have to go from base posotion of that company for your qualification.

I wouldn't put a plan to move on every 2 years or move on to another job whenever possible, I wouldn't change just to try something new, only if I have better deal and better chances in the new job.. also if you move too much you will not move up within any company and with time you will not find many companies to welcome you, your CV with many ex-jobs will not be encouraging for any company to take you in.. they seek hard working and loyalty.
But on the whole staying at the same job for 20 years or so is not a good thing unless you are always moving up and getting more advantages, if so I would not just change to try something new ..

I worked at the same job for 15 years before I left. The only reason I left is my husband got a job out of state. I stayed because I really enjoyed my job and the stability. I was promoted twice while I was there. And, yes, parts of my job were the same. My job was worthwhile because I was helping people. When a client was appreciative of what we did there, it made it all worthwhile.
There were times I did not want to be there. There was a good amount of bickering among staff, and gossiping. But, that is any where you go. I think that we all keep learning no matter what we choose to do, or how long we are at a job.
I'm not one for change and I have to hand it to those who are more adventurous than me.
