Apply a 20 minute rule my '20 minute' rule goes a long way to making valuable savings on our electricity bill. During the scorching summer months our electricity bill sky rockets, as does our water usage, so the '20 minute' rule was established. When it begins to feel a little hot in our house, I look at the time and add 20 minutes before I allow myself to turn on the air conditioner. Only when the 20 minutes is up does the air conditioner go on - not a minute before. Sometimes I even last another 20 minutes before turning it on. While 20 minutes of air conditioner time may sound like nothing, 20 minutes a day for 100 days in summer certainly adds up! This summer I am looking forward to cheaper electricity bills and a longer lasting water supply.

It is funny how I never thought about how using the fans in the summer would raise my electric bill, I always assumed my energy bills would be lower in the summer because I wasn't using the heating.
Thanks for drawing that to my attention, I will certainly think harder before I use the fans in future.

I was always told it cost more to turn something on and off then to leave it on. But I do have a small 110 air conditioner and I keep it on 72. I was told it doesn't run much more then a fan. I also was told that it doesn't cost much to run a fan a few dollars a month, which I am sure it is needed. I try to use as much natural light as possible by not turning on the lights unless It is needed. I use electric skillets and toaster ovens and crock pots and electric pots to cook so it help keeps the cost down so I can enjoy my fan, we are usually only running one fan if we aren't using the a/c but no fans if we are usin the a/c. Has anyone thought that our phones use about $2.00 or more a month in electric if you have the cordless kind that plugs into a wall socket?

Wow kathy that is a very good idea and a much needed one considering summer is not too far away...only last month our electricity bill was totally out of control and I'm worried what it will be in the months to come. Thanks for sharing this 20 minute tolerance tip, I will keep it in mind and try it.

Your lucky an air conditioner isn't required for your health. Heat stress is very dangerous for me because of the medications I must take. I do however only air-condition one small room in the house and live in it - my bedroom/office and just live out of crock pots for the most part.

Here in Arizona you will get whacked with a $2500 fine for BBQ or any cooking out doors. The fire danger is insane.

I also use a tiny toaster oven to roast meals when I'm not roasting up a turkey. One turkey can make a month's worth of meat for me.

Well the way i save on my bill is i turn the a/c to 75 and leave it there. When i get up in the morning i open my blinds and use free light during the day,at night i use 1 small lamp because the tv is usually on,if i go into another room i turn the light on and when im done i turn that light off.Another way to save on lights is to use cold water to wash and use cold water detergent, but i have total electric..The best way I have found to save on lights is to use them less..you might could check with other tenants and see if they are having the same problemI live in Texas also ans my bill runs about 150.00 per month...Hope this helps also it does run your bill up when you turn the thermostate up and down..I really feel for you cause I hate those high bills .

My trick for cutting down on the electric bill is to take a shower. I've often found that I get hot personally and that noone else is hot, except me. If I simply shower, I lower my temperature and feel better. And then it turns out that it wasn't so hot after all.
