Spelling Anyone??

United States

Heck, I am not an English teacher, but so many posts here are unreadable. I don't even know what they are trying to say! No offense to anyone, but come on! Its just post after post after post. We all make mistakes, but it seems some don't even try. I am not trying to start a war, but what is wrong here? I am looking for a serious discussion here. Please no "me too" posts. I have two dyslexic children, so I completly understand if its a learning disability. It just seems there are SO MANY posts like that.

one problem is there is no way to correct a misspelt post. I often just make spelling errors and would go back and sort them out if there was a way to edit posts

Its not that they are Dyslexic, alot of people here are learning english as a second language, they come from other places, I am used of the way their broken english is because I have had a few friends who were exchange students back in school so I can somewhat understand what they are trying to say. Thats why it is broken, it doesn't seem to fit, and seems choppy. Perhaps when we see this type of thing we should try and fill in the gaps for them and help them learn a little more. English is the hardest language to learn we should give them all credit for doing as well as they are

i agree, and why not try to think how it would be if you turn the table 'round. if you happen to go to their side of the world, i'm pretty sure you can't even say a sentence in their language correctly... and i'm sure, too, that they won't take it against you :)

Well, Aren't we just the post inspector today!!! When it comes to spelling, I try to think of this situation as probably some one who isn't just yet accomplished with the English language or some one who is just learning. Have a little patience. Respond with complete sentences and proper English. This will help these people. If you're not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Exactally the point I was making in an earlier post.... English is not everyone's first language. Errors are to be expected it isn't a fault.

I agree, if it looks like an ESL post. I do get frustrated with posts that are just 90% typos though, because that's just lazy lol. But I agree that it's definitely a help to ESL, learning disordered, etc people to be able to converse in an English setting

Many posts are unreadable because there are a lot of foreigners who post, and many of them aren't proficient in English. Others just didn't pay attention in school and didn't care to learn how to spell or how to construct a sentence. Sometimes it's aggravating; but, if I can't understand the posting, I just pass on it. Everyone is just trying to make some money or make friends, and that's the way it is.

though english is considered(?) as the international language, it's a fact that not all would be fluent with it (verbal or written). and i'm surprised how many would try to join the discussions regardless of their not being good at the language. and to be honest, i am happy about that. it is the sharing of what they know, even with crooked english, that matters. well, about the no-thought-easy-to-post replies like "me too", i guess we just get bored and tired sometimes :)

I understand what you mean. Thats not the stuff that bothers me. Like I said, I make mistakes too... Its not the abbriviations that bother me, its the way people just can't take a minute to check what they are saying to see if its legible. Thanks for taking a minute for responding, even if you don't agree ;-) Thats what I am looking for... opinions.

You know that for a lot of people on this site, English is their second language. Some are better at it than others, but they are trying. I suppose it could get annoying trying to interpret what someone is saying. Why not just skip those posts then or comment asking them for some clarity? Maybe their posts are legible to them, or they think that it is clear? Maybe give them a few pointers to help them out? For bad grammar, spelling or verb tense.... why not just respond to them using the proper way it's spelled, said whatever. It is nicer and helps them out.

I too find it frustrating. From the other side, if I were practicing my French (I know it "wellish") then one of the best ways would be to chat on French sites, because I can't afford to go live in Paris for awhile. I know it might be frustrating for some of them, but it would speed up the learning of a language!

I agree, it's my second day on this site and I can't believe how many posts are unreadable. I know there's abbreviations and internet-speak, but it's just silly.

Some of the errors that I have seen on most of the posts are outrageous! It has nothing to do with internet speak, internet speak is abbreviations.

I find I can (usually) tell an ESL post and I try to just respond if I can get the gist, or not respond if I can't. I find the posts frustrating that look sort of like this: me to, from whyu know they nevr say abot the, best carrs intown and so we g otta gess nd it suxx!!@ what u wanna do that for when u cudl jus go to the stores and right it on stuff nd tell peepl aboiut all of it its like what wood you like to bee a jerk cuz u are one and its annnoying guhh

See the post on misspelt parragraph . Cambridge university has proved that human mind can read any misspelt word if first and last letter of word is same and rest scrambled. If u don't understand then don't post

I see what you are saying and I agree with you to some extent. Like others have said, many mylot users are not native speakers so we cannot blame them for incorrect English. However, I have spent the last 4 and a half years working directly with student writers teaching them how to become better writers (currently, I am an associate Writing Center director). Over these last 4 years, I have seen the level of proper English usage decline steadily. You're an English teacher, why do you think this is?

I have also observed it but what can be said. Many are like that. They enjoy writing like that only. I prefer the orthodox way of writing English. I don't know how much correct I am writing but I try to write correct english.

I agree that there are spelling mistakes made by fellow mylot members but one shouldn't be too harsh as they are also trying to make money like you and me out here and post their opinions. may be grammer is not their strong point. Besides we all can improve as there is room for improvement in every human as no one is perfect.

Yea, may people use internet slang and things like that which probally stems from, IMs, chatroooms, and texting where you need to type quick so posting the word out will take so much time. Not to say that it isn't still kind of lazy.
