I am a worrier and I guess you could even say quite paranoid at times. But I cant cook fried foods, like fried chicken or anything like that because I am so scared of starting a fire. I can cook pretty well otherwise, but I am scared to death of a fire, I have two small kids and a dog. I dont think I can risk it. Does anyone know a safe way to do that?

maybe you have already experienced it, or seen one of the member of the family doing it ...first you must see to it that the oil is jsut enough in the frying pan and let it be heated well before putiing chicken or whatever then the fire should not be over the pan or near the rim of it...

What about getting a deep fryer? They have come a long way and are a great alternative to frying on the sotve top...which I would not want to do either.
From what I understand, home deep fryers comes in all sizes. I have a friend who has a pretty good sized one. It comes with a basket and a lid. so you heat up the pil in fryer, put your food in the basket, lower the basket into the oil and then close the lid while things cook. This really cuts down on splatter and the danger factor.
That said, it's always a good idea to have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen. Also make sure it's the right type for "grease" or kitchen fires. I know there are differnt fire extinguishers for different fires.
Happy Frying!

I am also a bit worried about frying food. Once over Christmas when I was really little, my grandmother knocked over the pan she was frying with and burned her entire arm. It was pretty horrible, but she was quite brave. Now when I fry, I will only use a sturdy deep fryer that is pushed back away from the ledge of the counter.
I feel better about deep fryers because they are made to specifically cook fried foods and can often be quite sturdy with a nice lid you can put on top to block the oil from splattering. I've never had a problem with using one yet as long as I am careful and follow the directions.
Also, when you fry, you might want to make sure that the kids and the dog are in another room. When my mother fried things, she used to tell me that I could no go within a certain distance of the fryer. I could sit in the kitchen and watch her, but I could not go near the fryer unless she said I could.

Just make sure that the temp is set at medium or medium high at the most and there should be no worries. Watch the food or stick close while cooking. Have a fire extinguisher just in case. But most of all... just relax! Frying foods are safe!

I have set fire to our kitchen before now, but really its just a case of taking your time, not overfilling the oil and making sure you have a fireblanket to hand in case of mishaps. Otherwise, why not buy a thermostatically controled deep fat fryer, they are extremely safe plus you don't have a chip pan to clean out straight after eating.

Well, I have never ever avoid any sort of food in my life. I eat whatever I wish to eat. My policy is eat and work. I eat a lot and then work out to make sure that I am being fit.

I think it depends what you are cooking, but you can often do foods which can be fried in the oven or microwave, It's less mess, less risky from a safety point of view, and also you use less oil so its a healthier option anyway. For example, I do home made chipped potatoes in the oven. I cut the potatoes into thin slices, put them onto an oven tray and just drizzle with olive oil before cooking in the oven at temperature around 200° C, for about 40 minutes. They taste lovely and fresh, and like fried chips, but they are not as fatty.
I also oven roast vegetables, again drizzle with a little olive oil , You can also do meats and fish in this way. Adding a little ammount of oil is not as healthy as plain grilling but it does help with the flavour.

That's a very hard question to answer. I can't say much but I surely know that you love your children and you will certainly do any possible think to protect them. I would say that you are not that much experienced in cocking fried food thus making you scared of the fire and the hot oil.
Their are two possible way"
1. I would recommend you to going to KFC or POPYES if in america to buy your fried chicken..lolz
2. On a serious note I think with time its going to change and you woun't face any problem
Bye
Take Care

aplly oil to whatever you want to fry and put it in a microwave. this may give you a feel of shallow frying. there will be no danger of fire and you will be using very less oil in your diet. and that is healthy!

I would suggest if it worries you that much then stop frying things & "grill" the food instead, that way you can rest assured that things wont get out of hand.I think that in the back of your mind you have this constant 'dread' of something catastrophic about to happen to you,my advice to you is if in doubt do nowt!

I fry food every now and then (not too often because I know it isn't healthy) but when I do I don't have any problems. Can the grease catch on fire? I have an electric stove and never worried about it, I have two small kids also and I keep them out of the kitchen when I cook. I don't understand why you would be scared, have you heard something that I apparently missed??

If you didn't want to invest in an electric deep frier, you could oven fry. I do this with pork chops and chicken. Just coat the chicken or chops like you normally would, place alittle oil in a metal baking pan, place the meat in it and "fry" at 375 degrees. Just turn it over a few times wile cooking. It will give you a crunchy coating on the meat.

Stacy, as long as you don't leave the oil heat on high for long without adding food to it your probably not going to start a fire. Always when frying food stay right there with it as opposed to walking away from it. Fried chicken cooking times vary depending upon the pieces. Wings usually take the least amount of cooking time, and drumsticks the longest. They will need to be turned.

I really don't think you should worry if you buy a new frying device...now a days, those are meant to be really safe..they have a thermostat built inside them that makes it very safe to use.
I understand you have young kids and a dog ....so you should at ALL time be around when you fry your food and watch that your kids don't g near by....
That's my advice ! Hopefully I helped a little !
