Charity suggestions?

Okay, I have a shiny new paypal payout sitting here, and now I need to find out where it's going. Since the cat's been out of the bag about this for a bit now, I'll go ahead and admit it: When I make money on mylot, it goes to charity.
This month I want to give it to a charity other than my usual local ones, just because I want to broaden my impact a little. So I'm hoping either to receive suggestions for charities that are worthwhile, or suggestions for websites that allow you to research charities before you give. I really want to make sure my money goes for something good instead of just lining some morally bankrupt nonprofit leader's pockets.
Anyone got ideas? Oh, and feel free to post if you are participating in a charity event yourself and need sponsors, as long as you are linking to your particpant page at the charity's website, and not your personal paypal account.

I think what you are doing is wonderful. I know one said what you earn here can't be much but I think they were obviously missing the point. You are giving to others and it doesn't matter if that is $5 or 5 million, it's the fact that you are trying to make a differnce and that is always commedable.
A few places you might want to check into are the local abuse shelters, the local food bank, or even a local animal shelter. Another option for you is check with your electric company, some have a special fund for those who go short and the donations help those in need.
Hope that helps.

Oh, you know, I have done some of those other things, but the electric company is one thing I hadn't thought of! Especially in the winter here, there are always people who have serious problems with heating costs, whether it's electric, gas, or fuel oil. I'm sure there's got to be some kind of charity for that sort of thing! Thanks so much!
I agree that it's the fact of trying to make a difference that's important. Thanks for the encouragement, emeraldisle, as that one post did make me feel a little bad. =)

You're very welcome. I know we've had to call on that assistance on occasion but ours is in the summer time here due to the heat and having the a/c on.
Something to consider not right now but in the future is something like Toys for tots or checking like at Wal-Mart they usually have a tree with names of kids who are in need of a Christmas gifts that year. I know it's not your holiday but it's an idea.
Some people just don't realize how much even a couple of dollars can mean for some. It can make a big difference especially when it's added all together. Let's face it if everyone gave a dollar to one charity that would be one huge pot. Things like telethons also show how even a few dollars when added together with others makes a huge amount. Don't let ones like that get to you. I think you are doing an amazing thing. You deserve a pat on the back.

I tend to donate to groups and causes that are bent on getting away from what most people think are christian values, LOL. Planned parenthood, the Gay Lesbian community...even though I don't give them as much because they have LOT'S of money coming in.
I give to things meant to liberalize society as often as I can.

Those are some really good causes, Sagemother. I participate in some of the local GLBT stuff, and I have been known to give money in those areas. In fact, the crisis center I donate to is also a designated "safe place" for GLBT folks, and also coordinates a GLBT support group. =)
As for Planned Parenthood, unfortunately the local one here didn't last. I was really sad to see it go, and participated in the effort to keep it here. =(

I send money to a charity that ministers to the poor in Haiti. Right now I help to sponsor a young man in Medical School in Port au Prince. He plans to practice medicine in Haiti when he finishes. The charity is Helping Hands Ministries, Inc. We do not have a web site yet, I'm working on that. I did visit Haiti to see whether or not the money was actually going where they said it was...it is! They have over 80 schools in rural areas, among other things.

That sounds like a wonderfully helpful charity, susieq223! I'd love to see your website when you're finished with it. It's pretty awesome that you actually went to Haiti to check things out there!
Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it. =)

We had a 14 year old die on our soccer field a few years back with heart problems. On April 28th, my mom is walking in the American Heartwalk in memory of him. However, she does not have a charity website, anyway we could work something out through the message system here? Otherwise, my vote goes to the national Special Olympics chapter...I am a Special Education teacher and tehy do alot for my students. Just a thought. Either way, WOW, good for you !

I took a peek at the heart walk website, and it looks like it would be fairly simple to register your event there, though I'm not sure what all the page offers. I know when I was doing similar events (Relay for Life, Walkamerica, etc), people could actually make donations straight to the website. Even if not through paypal, it would be easy enough to put it on a card and pay it back with my money after I get it from paypal. Anyways, I won't rule it out even if she's not online, but I'm sure you can understand why I'm a little wary about just sending people money.

Wow you are one generous lady Lecanis that is very nice of you to give money that you earn here to charity. I have yet to earn any money here so lets leave me out of this, but I usually donate to St. Jude's Children's hospital, our volunteer Fire services, our state police and the AIDS foundation for children. But any charity you spend money on is good no matter where you send it to. So congratulations again someone somewhere would be thanking you for your kindness. God Bless.

Aww I'm sorry to hear that you haven't earned money here yet! You've made some really nice responses that I've seen, and I'm sure you'll do wonderfully here once you get settled in a bit! =)
Thanks for telling me about your charities! I really appreciate the help.
As for any charity being good, the reason I'm skeptical is that I had a friend who got burned pretty bad. He found out that a local charity that he'd been doanting to for years was actually using the money in ways that he didn't agree with, and would never have given if he'd known. So that's why I like to research charities before I give to them. =)

Oh that is so low cheating people on charity. I am sorry for your friend dear. But if you must know The ST. Jude's Children's hospital is for children affected with cancer and they do not send back any child from any part of the world without treatment. People who can afford it pay their bills and for the children who can not afford the expensive treatments the hospital pays for them they raise all their money through charity only. I think it is wonderful that so many people are spending for a cause and for our future generations.
Hey don't worry about me not earning I am here for the fun of mylotting and for meeting people here I have met some wonderful people here including you. Thanks for the words of encouragement dear it was very kind of you. :)

I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions for charities, and im sureI'm not considered a charity so I wont hope for it, lol. I just want to take a second to commend what you are doing. It is very generous and admireable of you. While we are all scrambling to put 30 or 40 bucks a month in our pockets you are typing away seflessly for the sake of others. You are an example here to be upheeld and i greatly respect you for it. :) best of luck. As far as charities, why not keep it local? look into you local food pantry or perhaps a chidrens hositol fund. Your local fire department probably does alot with charity, they ususaly do, stop in and ask them what existys in your area that has a need for donations

Thanks so much for responding, and for all your kind words.
You know, I don't really know why I'm so determined to find something nonlocal this time. That's a good point. I should think about why I'm thinking that way. I haven't checked with the fire department yet. I'll have to put that on my list of things for next time, along with the food pantry idea. Thanks!

I support the Woodland Trust, they protect woodlands and their ecosystems fro future generations, Oxfam, and teh Parkinsons Disease society. However, rather than just sending cash to random charities, why not use the money to directly do something of benefit to the community around you? Maybe sponsor some planting in a childs playground, or take a big box of cakes round to the old peoples home. That sort of real action is often far more valuable than just cash.

Thanks for the suggestions.
The reason I was planning on donating cash right now is because I have a plethora of health problems that keep me from going out and doing much. Right now getting to work is pretty much all I can handle. Which I can, I do a lot of volunteer activities, and just generally help out people around me.

Lecanis,
I am so proud of you for doing this. What a wonderful thing to do with that money! You must have been raised in a wonderful family.
I have been out of work and so I have to say that this has been going to make ends meet. When I go to church or when I am somewhere someone needs a donation, like at the checkstands, then it goes there. I don't feel good about donating to those people that stand at corners and beg for money. I have seen too many scams on that line.
For the holidays my daughter gave donations to Darfur in other peoples' names and then notified them along with one of the photographs she took while donating time in Africa last fall. That is probably the greatest gift I have ever received. It is hanging on my wall and I am so proud to tell friends and visitors about the things she has done and about the photo of the young boy that she gave to me.

I got a bit of a kick out of this post, mainly because I was raised in a horrible family. The only people who were nice to me in that family were my great-grandparents, who were too old to actually raise me. I was horribly abused, and often completely abandoned. In fact, a large part of the reason I am so determined to help others is because I had to look to others (not my family) for help when I was young. Sometimes I didn't get that help, and I don't want anyone to ever have to feel that way again.
I think your daughter did something really wonderful, and I'm glad that you're so proud of her. You must be a wonderful parent. =)

What you are doing is a wonderful thing and I applaud you for it.
I was wondering if maybe you have considered donating to an animal shelter or something? I don't know how much of an animal lover you are or not, but I know that these shelters always need donations.
On the other hand, I donated some money to a Strep B infection research charity ages ago. My sisters 20 day old baby was killed by this disease and so it was the least I could do. if I can find the actual site again, I'll give you the link for it.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! If you find that site, be sure to let me know. That sounds like a really good charity. I know when I was pregnant I was terrified because I tested positive for Strep B, and had to get treated during labor for it. I'm so sorry to hear about your sister's baby.

greyhound welfare charities are my favourites.
the ones that look after, raise the profiles of, and re-home ex-racing greyhounds when they are discarded at the end of their racing careers (often not much older than 3,4,maybe 6) when they can often easily live to 14+

My husband has talked about these charities before. When we have a house of our own, he wants to adopt one of those greyhounds. =)
Thanks so much for reminding me about this! I'll have to take a peek around at some when I have money again!

my husband has three uncles and two aunt who work in africa for the white fathers, a community from the caholic church. our money always goes to threre, if we got from mylot. but they have no website, and as you dont know us, we cant expect that you give also to them. i dont like to give normally to big chariry organisations, because i think too much from the money goes to the burocratic things there and not direct to the people who need it. i am from brasil, and here is also a lot of helping necessary, especially in the favelas. My husband and me are planing a project for that, but its not that far to have an exact project. We are planing to make a free school for children for mthe favelas with possibility to eat and have a homework help there. Maybe when its ready and we are able to show you more about the project you like to help us one day. But for now, its probably the best to gibbe your money to your own country. There is a lot of help necessary in every country. And a lot of people depend on people with a good heart like you are.

Thanks for sharing your story! I really appreciate it.
You make a good point about needing help in every country. I know a lot of people here in the US who are only concerned with international causes, and I agree that those things are important, but I like to also be able to help out people here.
Good luck with your project!

All I can say is . . . WOW! That is so admirable of you. You actually gave me goosebumps!
My mother was on kidney dialysis for sixteen years. She had two transplants, both of which failed, so I have a soft spot in my heart for people that suffer from kidney failure.
For future consideration, my humble suggestion would be the National Kidney Foundation, whose website is: http://www.kidney.org/

First let me virtually shake your hand because you're planning to do something for less fortunate people. You could try visiting thehungersite.com and purchase some of the items they have for sale because the proceeds go to charity, or you could go to your local orphanage and donate some things that the children will need.

Yesterday I was reading one of sagemother's discussions about how the FDA is trying to limit our access to herbs, vitamins and all manner of alternative therapies, and there was a link to the website healthfreedomusa.org that I checked out... I watched a 40 min. video about Codex on the site and was APPALLED... there are links on the site where you can sign a petition, or donate... if I had extra money I would donate it here. And there is plenty of information so you can do as much research as you want. Please, whether or not you donate, check it out... I learned more about the WHO and the future of our access to nutrition yesterday by watching that video... it's sickening. And fighting Codex is a very good cause!

Hmm. I don't know of anything like that here, which is why I was asking. All I got typing in donation.org was essentially a search engine. I'm hoping someone in the US will find a site here that rates charities and tracks how much of the money given goes to what.
Thanks! I wasn't really trying to brag here or anything, just wanted some suggestions. I hope you don't think I'm looking for props or anything. =p

You're right, it's not a huge amount of money. Certainly nothing like the amounts rich people give to charity.
However, in looking at this sort of thing, you have to think about a person's financial situation. If I wanted, I could use the money I make from mylot to help dig myself out of debt (mostly medical debt). I could certainly use the money. I'm not rich, I don't even own a home or a car for that matter, and I make far less money than the local poverty level. Yet, I give the money I make on mylot to charity rather than keeping it and using it for myself. Not only that, but I also give a certain amount of money straight out of my paycheck to charity, and when my health permits, I volunteer.
I didn't give all of that information upfront, because that wasn't the point. In fact, the point was to have other people tell me about charities that interested them, or websites for researching charities, because I wanted to have a wider range of charities to consider when I did use my mylot money. And it might not sound like a lot to you, but the $35 I made last month on mylot is more of a charitable donation by itself than what some people give, even people who could afford to give.
