Do you feel guilty missing work even when you are legitimately ill?

I've had a fever off and on for the past couple of days, and last night it was really bad. So I didn't go to work today. I feel horrible about it because I was supposed to work later than some other people today, and one of them will have to cover for me now. Usually I go to work if it's at all possible even if I don't feel well. In fact, I've been sick all week, and this is the only day I've missed. I even intend to go to work tomorrow. So why do I feel bad about it? Do you feel guilty if you miss work, no matter how sick you are?

I did at one time. However then I got very sick and I had to take off, even though with missing the last day of work for the week I had 15 hours of over time my managers tried to make me feel bad for missing. This same place I ended up with an ulcer due to the pressure they put on us. I finally realized though that my health was more important then any job. That they wouldn't care what happened to me due to trying to work when I should be in bed or that they wouldn't care if I spread my illness to others. That if I'm that sick I need to take care of myself before them otherwise I would end up in no shape to do anything.

Sounds like you have a great manager. Those are very few and far between at least in my experience. I guess if I had someone like that I'd probably feel guilty for missing work too. That can make a difference, if the company seems to care about us then we care about them too.

It sounds like you had some really bad managers there! People are much nicer at the place where I work thankfully. In fact, the service manager is constantly reminded me to take care of myself, and often works with me schedule-wise because I have many doctor's appointments and health concerns. In fact, she even drove me to the hospital once to get my allergy drops when I didn't have a ride. =)

I do feel guilty whenever I miss work. Even if I am sick or if I have an appointment. I always feel like I am disappointing someone or that people will look at me in the wrong way because I missed work. You know, make assumptions or something like that. I am just like that about most things. I am a person of my word and anytime I have to go against it I feel horribly guilty. I guess that's kind of how I look at work. You make a promise to be there and when you're not...I'm sure you get my point. My husband is always telling me to ease up or lighten up about it, and I am, but it is more difficult than I thougth it would be. So to you I say, don't feel so bad about missing work because you were sick. I'm sure that they managed to make it and I'm sure that you will have to cover someone else when they are absent. And I hope that you feel better soon. Guilt ways heavier when you're sick. Take care lecanis and don't beat yourself up. Take it from a few guilty absenteer. :) Get better soon.

Thanks! It's so good to hear that I'm not the only person who feels this way sometimes. Thanks for the encouragement and good wishes too! I'll try to take good care of myself and get better! =)

I completely understand how you feel. I always feel guilty for not going to work. Even if I am terribly ill. I end up laying in bed thinking "I could've gone today, why am I sitting here?" Even though I know I would not make it all day at work.

Yup, me too. I slept a few extra hours this morning, but then I got up to take care of my son. And this whole afternoon I'm thinking "If I'm sitting here on mylot, and playing with Dusty, then couldn't I have gone to work?" But I know if I had gone to work I wouldn't have been able to do much, and since I'm on my feet all day, I probably would have just made the whole situation much worse. And possibly made my coworkers and customers sick as well.

I worked sick for a year until I was told to go home and not to come back until I can do my job. Guess what I am disabled now. Your go workers know you have been sick and are probably glad you stayed home. One thing you should worry about is spreading your illness to your co-workers. You may be contangious. It is better to stay home when you are sick and not infect your co-workers. I know I sound just like a mother that is because I am. I am also a nurse.

I'm so sad about your situation. I really wish I could come up with something to help you! You made a good point about passing illness onto others. Thanks! Hehe, there's nothing wrong with sounding like a mother! And it's always good to have the advice of a nurse too!

I don't think I would feel gulity for calling in sick if I actually was. This hinges on whether or how much I've called in when I'm not sick, or it would if I had ever called into work sick, which surprsingly enough I havren't. And, there were times when I considered myself legitimately sick enough to do so.

Wow. I can't imagine having never called into work sick. I don't do it too often, especially considering the kind of health problems I have, but once in a while I just have to. I think it's awesome that you never have!

Yes, I feel guilty missing work even when I'm legitimately ill. I work in a small office with a very closely-knit group of people, so when one of us goes down for the count it means the next person has to pick up the slack. There have been many times when I've gone to work with an illness just so that one of my co-workers wouldn't have to suffer. It's stressful!

The place where I work is like that too. There are only so many tellers in the bank, so if one of us is gone, there's going to be more work for everyone else! I've worked with illness before too, but today I just couldn't do it. I called in, and then went back to bed for several hours, before I had to get up and take care of my son so my husband who works nights could sleep.

In high school I had a four-year perfect attendance record. However, you might say I cheated a little bit. I would get out of bed after my mother left for work and go to school. I would make it through the morning session but after the afternoon session started I usually asked to be excused. However, if I could contimate I would show up for roll call and then ask to leave but return after lunch and then leave after roll call. You might call it cheating...I do...but it got me a perfect attendence record.

to be honest, I should not have felt guilty everytime I call in sick when i'm really sick but my boss makes me feel guilty. my boss sympathises superficially and he makes me feel that i'm still lying about it. i can't help but feeling guilty the whole day!

Well, yes, I feel real guilty if I have to miss a day of work due to illness. I think just about any responsible person would. In my case, if I miss work sombody from day shift has to stay late to fill in because I'm in a managment position so I kind of feel obligated to be there more than most. Take care of yourself, because your health is more important than your job!

Thanks for your response! Someone had to stay late for me today too, which is part of why I was worried about it. One the other hand, you're right that my health is more important. =)

Why should you feel guilty? After all, you are granted those sick leave by law. You didn't sell your person and soul to the company. And please, with the pitiful sum they pay you, you feel guilty? Even when legitimately sick? You are a rare one. (But I already know that.) :PPP

i do,but i'd feel even worse if i come in and infect everyone.it really depends on what it is-if it were viral pneumonia, for instance,i'd call out.

I am an engineer and have worked in a design and development company for four years. My boss had a habit of making project leaders which in itself was good but troublesome, sometimes, specially when i got ill, though it was rare. I have led quite a few design and development projects, sometimes even with my seniors working under me:-). Being a leader is hell lot of resposibility. i remember, once i couldn't take leave even when i was ill, off and on for a whole month(sometimes with 103F), not because i couldn't but just because i felt bad about halting the project even for one single day. On another occasion, i didn't feel guilty at first when i took a day off because of sickness, but when next morning i rejoined office just to find that there was no progress, the previous day, i really felt guilty that just because i wasn't there, the work couldn't progress. I just trusted my fellows as they were equally capable for the task but they did nothing just to make me feel guilty. That was really a hard and heavy day for me and it affected my performance that day but thankfully, by the end, the overall project was well in time and met the targets.

I do feel very guilty because believe it or not I sometimes say that I am sick even when I am not so when something is wrong and I do need time off it is very hard to do so with a straight mind.

I don't do that very often, but I have once or twice called in sick when emotional things were going on and I just didn't feel up to working. But calling in just made the situation worse for me, because I felt so guilty. I guess I just can't deal with that kind of thing! =p

When I worked for other people I always felt really guilty staying off work when I was sick. I'm rarely ill so it didn't happen very often. I always felt as if I was letting people down which is stupid really - I mean if you're sick there's nothing you can do about it. There was a few times when I struggled into work feeling really bad and in truth no-one thinks any better of you for doing it! In fact I was probably just spreading my germs to everyone else I worked with. Now I work for myself it never happens because even if I can't make it into the office I can still work from home.

When I was nursing, I sure did. In general Nurses are over worked and understaffed to begin with. Call outs makes it twice as hard then to handle what is already a heavy load. I worked sick so much. But Lecanis as an adult if you are running a fever thats your body telling you it is sick and you must rest to heal. Sometimes we just can not help it, we get sick.

No, I don't feel guilty, If I can't then I can't, if it's too hard or will make me get worth then i better take the rest.. I don't even feel guilty if I take a leave on a fake excuse unless someone will really have hard time covering for me I don't care to skip work sometimes for whatever reasons and i don't feel guilty about it.. it's all part of the regulations and the system and I like to take all my vacations and sick leave days.
