Szeksz The way you described it means you already have a gift, a gift of compassion. The gift of words is not even necessary here. You did what you had/could do, and it was more than enough in the situation. Sometimes it's best to stay silent.

Szeksz Well I'm not a biologist, but I think it has to do a lot with taste and senses, nopt just affection. Maybe it's just with snakes, but I think dogs also have very sensitive tounges - and of course noses - and when they lick you they also "feel" you up...
