It's kind of a cliche but few people can write a convincing crash. So what's a good way to crash on a deserted island - aside from sinking a boat/crashing a plane?

Kidnapping, possibly. You could end up stuck in a coma and you're forever dreaming of being on island. When the space shuttle comes back it could miss target and end up on an island.

Well, you said "crash on a deserted island." there's only so many ways to crash, I assume you meant to say "stranded on a deserted island" In which case... 1) Time travel scenarios. If it's really a crash you want, you can have the time travel machine...
