why do cats scratch so much???

my neighbors cat is ruining some of his and my furniture all from his scratching?!?!??!?! how can you get cats to stop scratching furniture ad to prevent them from scratching all together. why do they scratch so much...

annicat I bought an $8 scratching post from WalMart for my cats and they do not scratch the furniture. I had my Rusty Cat for 18 years 2 months and 10 days before he crossed that rainbow bridge and he never scratched my furniture.

Do you sleep with complete silence or need a specific sound ?

I have seen this to be different from person to person. Some can't sleep with sound surrounding them - i, for example, if i want to sleep over the day i don't stand sounds especially if i am alone, but my girlfriend can't sleep...

annicat I like pitch black, the fan running, cos I get too hot with 3 dogs sleeping with me. If I have to go somewhere and sleep without my dogs, I have a hard time staying asleep. I am so used to having them in the bed with me.
