what is a cup, recipe measurement wise?

I have read a lot of really really yummy recipes on mylot and some of them use the American "cup" unit of measurement. Could anyone please tell me what a "cup" measures so that I can try some of these out of this world dishes?...

desertlady An American cup measurement in a recipe refers to 8 oz. Hope this helps. I am lost when measurements are mentioned in the metric system.
