Does anyone still have dial up?

I read a comment by a user saying they were on dial up and I just couldn't imagine people navigating Mylot on dial up. I honestly don't know anyone in real life that still has dial up...
It would be so boring, so time consuming, I would never be that patient just to browse mylot. You'd be spending way too much time on your phone line and getting too little in return. I can respond and create tons of discussions in an hour, but with dial up it would take FOREVER! That is dedication...

Hello MrNiceGuy,
Nice to visit with you again.
Thankfully Hubby & I have broadband. Yet, I do know at least two people who still use dial-up here in The States. One lives in a very rural area, that doesn't offer any kind of high speed. And, the other can just barely afford dial up. Neither uses their computer for more than basic email.
Even though we live out in the sticks, our local phone company does offer dsl. So, you bet we jumped on it as soon as it became available. No going back now, we'd lose our minds! Ugghhhh!

I still have dial up . It takes forever. We live out in the country and we cannot get broadband. We called and there are too many trees for broadband. We hate dial up. So I get online at work most of the time it is much faster.

I have never had anything but dial-up. Broadband is not available for my area, and according to AT&T, it is not expected to be any time soon. Since I have never experienced broadband, I wish for it, but I do not miss it. I use a desktop accelerator and Firefox to speed things up a bit, but I am destined to be a little behind everyone with broadband. I have never seen a YouTube video, because it takes too long to download. Even if I had the video equipment, I couldn't enter the myLot YouTube contest, because it would also take forever to upload It took me 4 days to download Open Office with the help of "free download manager", and I have yet to play second life, because it will take approximately 15 days to download it. I'm not complaining, mind you, I just wish people would quit discriminating against dial-up users. Believe it or not, we still comprise the majority of Internet users worldwide.

I'm with AT&T and use dial up myself. We're in Texas and there are a lot of us that use dial up because the only other thing available is satellite which can be very expensive to install. DSL and cable connections won't be available for years. I don't have an accelerator on my desktop because it actually seemed to slow my computer down when I tried it. Firefox is definitely faster that IE. I have IE on here too since some things just aren't compatible with anything else, but I hardly use it anymore these days. I have a secondlife account and we just got a second hard drive so we'll have the space for it and some other stuff. I may have to bring my computer to a friends to do the initial download, but I want to see how long it will actually take us to download it here first. My husband plays Everquest with lots of people who have faster types of connections and can usually get a faster reaction than they can. They get more "ping" than we do so he can react in the game faster. Most times with other types of connections the downloads may be faster, but the uploads aren't always. At least that's my understanding. I've never had a problem with using MyLot. It's about the same for me here or down at my mother in laws (who does have DSL). I've seen YouTube (yeah, takes longer to download so I make lunch while it does...). Didn't really see much worth watching. The only problem I have with dialup is that it does make watching some videos or newscasts online kind of choppy if they're live feed.

Sadly, some areas have no other access if they want to go surfing. I've a friend who has only dial up access. She lives in Alaska. It can be managed.
To make things quicker, you can do two things if your in this position.
One you disable graphics, in other words, don't download anything but the text from a website. No pictures, movies, sounds, anything. Then things move somewhat more quickly. The downside is there may be critical information in those graphics as is more and more common on the Internet today.
Two, you set up more than one page to download overnight with a download manager overnight while you sleep. Then you can get the graphics. Then the stuff is stored on your computer when you wake up and you can work on it the next day. Hopefully, your phoneline to the internet didn't disconnect while you slept, if it did, you have to finish the next night and so on...
I used to do dial up. However, I need to have my regular phone free, and installing a second phone line dedicated to my computer...it proved less expensive via a cable company package to have a cable modem and it is a great deal faster.

It is funny how people take things for granted so quickly.
I had broadband for one year in 2005... before moving back in the bush.
Not only I am on dial up... but because I am so far from the exchange... I only get 30Kbps on my 56Kbps modem.
I still can do everything just fine... except that I cannot watch any videos on the net... nor can I download large files... as it just takes too long.
But myLot is not a problem.
Out of 10 years on the net... I have been 9 years on dial up. And I started out with a 14.9 modem... followed by a 33.3 modem. That would make me a pioneer of the Internet. You cannot appreciate what you have unless you have earned it.

Yes, I live in the Philippines and I am still on a dial up at home because it's free, am using globelines, and their dial up is on promotion if you're also using their landline. Though, most people here in the Philippines already use dsl, I am one of those few exceptions. lol It is slow, around 50 mbps speed, and I just multi-task whenever I'm on the computer. Like do some organizing, cleaning, or whatever on the side while I'm on the internet.

I do know some people who still have dial up. But that's mainly cause they don't use the internet for fun, just basically to check mail, check the news and not much more. Obviously if you want to download stuff you cannot use dial up unless you want to go mental.

You might laugh at this but until early last year (2006) I had dialup and it suited my purposes on the whole. When you use the net mostly for email and doing a few other things like banking and shopping you don't need the fastest connection. I was finding it very time-consuming though over a period of time which is why I went over to broadband. I can't imagine how I managed without it now! LOL

I know 3 people who have dial up. I just wouldn't be able to take the slowness of that. I guess you could say I am spoiled by having the DSL high speed. I spend way too much time on my computer to have to deal with dial up. UGH! I like it when the web pages turn as fast as if you were turning pages in a book.

I would agree with you - posting on here with dial up would need real dedication! I'm in the UK and my friend still has dial up - I keep trying to talk her into getting broadband, but she says she doesn't need it as she doesn't use the internet that much!

I use dial-up on AOL and it's really not all that bad. I'm using browsing two or three different websites at once, as well as talking to at least three people, so by the time I switch back and forth between windows, the myLot page I was loading is usually done.

We had dial up back in December when we moved house. We decided to switch internet providers because we just weren't happy with the service that the Cable company were providing.
So, our new company (Uniserve) gave us a great deal. Free dial up till our modem arrived, 3 months free use of hi speed, 1 month at half price and then full price from then on.
Going from Hi Speed back to dial up killed me lol. I'd forgotten how slow it was. Waiting for my email accounts to open was hellish LOL.
I have one friend that I know of that has dial up. She can't afford hi speed unfortunately, and she has a lot of problems with net surfing. We've spent hours chatting in MSN Messenger, and she frequently gets highly frustrated with her internet connection lol.
