Recently i had been to ADLABS to buy tickets for the saturday nite show. I asked for 3 tickets , and each costed Rs. 110. The man could have immediately said Rs.330 (Rs.110*3=330) but unstead he wasted 5 mins to seach for a calci and actually multiplied the rate.
I am now wondering does using calculators impair your normal calculating spped and makes u addictive to calci..
R u used to using calculators or you can easily multiply/divide with your mind???
I can do it through my thought calculator...though i require calculators for complex one's but m not addicted to it like the sales man!
Do share your thoughts!

well such incidents do occur a lot... Yeah calculators do impair our normal calculating speed and we get to a point where we cant do a thing without a calculator...
I am not so much dependent on a calculators now while doing simple arithmetic but for doing complex ones i need one...
i faced a situatiuon during my high school years where we were allowed to use calculators and i became almost an addict to it that i couldn't do even simple problems without one...
so least usage of calculators provides best results...

Calculators are making this generation a little softer in the head it's true. But where I come from, your concert is like $2.75 per ticket. Sweet price! Hope it was a good show for such a bargain! Rupees rock!

I would use a calculator if it was a really tricky problem but ordinarily I work things out in my head. I worked in a shop for a while and everything had to be added up in the head there, so it was good practice, then I played darts to a very high level and had to know up to my 19 times table and be able to multiply, add and subtract very quickly lol.
Some people are unable to carry out figure work, but those who are not limited in this way can work gradually up to independence from the calculator.
I am not boasting, but it is very useful to be able to work out the cost per unit when faced with a number of "special offers" on different sizes of merchandise, and it always wows my partner that I can do this. However, being the litle Sweetheart that he is, he did of course have to check using a computer and he was astounded that I was correct.
What do I do with him eh?
So to wrap up my reply, I think that mathematics take practice and if someone is anxious they will get things wrong, then they will not be able to avoid the calculator.

well, i don't really depend on calculator that much... for simple calculations, i can still do it mentally... i only use calculator for complex calculations where my brain can't take it anymore... i think calculator make people's brain lazy...

i hate mathematics but of coarse u cannot live without it..even for simple day to day calculation i use a calci..in my phone..
i just am not sure of my mental calculations.and so i again redo the whole on a calci..

Ha! be thankful it wasn't me! I don't even know what the rss stuff you're talking about is! I assume that you are from a country outside of America? Any who I am the type to not use my brain and rely solely on another person or a calculator. Ignorant I know. Oh well ... numbers make my head hurt!

I dont use calculators for simple calculations. I can calculate a good amount in my mind itself. I don't have a calculator also. Thank you.

I would have given him the benefit of doubt. Perhaps he just want more accuracy. He is just not being confident of himself. I am one lazy one to do mental calculation. I am no maths genius. I always use a calculator as I do not have enough fingers to count :P

I do not use calculators while I am studying and do most of the calculations mentally but during exams I do use calculators. We are allowed calculators in the examination hall. I strongly believe that using of calculators time & again impaires our mental ability to calculate. Once you start doing all the calculations mentally you start getting new ideas of easily calculating certain things. Our mind does the whole work.. Suppose we want to find the result of 330*10 what I do is just add a 0 to 330 ie: 3300. Well, this is just a simple & obvious calculation but pretty difficult for those who have never tried..I even try the complex one's mentally but the problem is I forget the earlier results. What do you think????? Shouldn't we try even the complex ones???

and if you want the result of 330*15, just add half of the result to the prior calculations ie: 3300+1650 which is equal to 4950. You see its so simple...

I'm really good at math (am through 4 years of Calculus as a high school senior) and I use calculations in my head all the time. I believe it makes it easier, but it does bug me when people can't multiply the simplest things like what you mentioned. People become dependent on calculators and the like which is kind of scary, I'd like to see more people using mental math.

I stink at mathematics and I am taking Statistics at the moment. I do not know how on Earth I made it to this point, but however I did it, all I know is that I am taking it and I need to remember what to do and how to do it.

I'm not mathematical wizard but if figures are not so much complicated to calculate with my own brain then I would prefer to do it manually. Its saves time and will help to enhance my computing ability.
I don't understand why that man have to find calculator to compute that 110*3 even a typical student could have the answer easily. And to think that its his job so basically he must be used to the computing the price of tickets since its not that too many to compute. Its everybody's knowledge that what you do everyday would be just like a common sense to you.

Well math is certainly not my strong area, but if it's simple math like what you mentioned I don't need a calculator. When it comes to decimals and larger uneven sums I like having a calculator to check my answer.

This is why I was in Special Ed. because I SUCK at math!
I couldn't do the complex ones in my head, so I used, and will ALWAYS use a calculator, because I have bombed in my math classes in college repeatedly, and since those college classes don't allow calculators in class, I couldn't pass the class! I've always felt comfortable with a calculator than without one. At least calculators, like computers, never lie, unless I input a wrong number.

Lol.. I can do that calculation without a calculator. :P
As for your question, I will use one when it gets more complicated or if I need to be very sure with the answer. Otherwise, I would just calculate the sum mentally.
