Why God Made Us Different Colors

I have often wondered why God made us different colors. I have never found the definitive answer, although I have heard a couple of theories. Here is my theory: I think that God made us different colors because He was wise enough to know that the competitive spirit of man would lead to one race or another believing they were superior to all other races. He has arranged it so that the ones who gain enough wisdom will begin to look beyond the color of a person's skin to truly see the individual within. This is to teach us tolerance. I feel that once we learn the art of tolerance, we are well on our way to being what we were created to be-people.

Well it hardly works out that way. Fair-skinned people who were most advanced were also the worst perpetrators of atrocities on people of other colours, throughout the world. Their ‘wisdom’ in no way made them treat all mankind as equal, rather it reinforced their belief that they were the most superior being on the earth, the true ‘Aryans’, born to rule over the ‘natives, barbarians, tribals, unenlightened pagans’. A lot has definitely changed since then and efforts are on to make the world a better place but the century-old scars will take long to heal.
But the reason why I think people have different colours is because of gene and geographical locations. In my country India, people of different geographical zones have different features and skin-colours. Its all because of the sun’s rays and the melanin content of our skin. It has nothing to do with religion and how God made us.

Nowhere have i said that the Bible created Aryans. No religion discriminates humanity on skin colour. i said that people of a certain race dominated others throughout most part of modern history and you are admitting the same by quoting on the way slaves were treated. Not only in America, this happened throughout Africa and Asia too, by the British colonial rulers. This has nothing to do with God, but to do with man's greed and urge to control others. And as for the Aryans, I think the Germans under Hitler believed they were the true Aryans, born to rule the world.

I beg to differ with you, sudipta. Nowhere have I seen in the Bible that Aryans were born to rule over others. In fact, we were all created equal under God. It says so right in our Constitution. When one race deems itself to be superior simply by the whiteness of their skin, they are deceiving themselves. Perhaps that is why the slaves in U.S. history were prevented from learning to read and write-because there was a fear that this freedom would allow them to be on an equal footing with their oppressors.

I see that you know something of the Bible, AP. You are right-to some extent. God was forced to confuse language, and it has resulted in confusion in other areas.

you are absolutely right Ambiepam it all began when the babel tower were destroyed, then the people started speak in many languages and they couldn't understand each other anymore so God decided to separate us all he put the people that could understand each other, but began to wonder though how awesome is God's plan and purpose for each one of us...

bugger all to do with god, more to do with a biological evolutionary process if im not greatly mistaken. skin with high levels of pigmentation are well suited to hot climates, those without it, more suited to cold climates
blessed be

So, eskarena, I take it that you don't believe in a Divine plan.

There is actually a quite simple biological explanation. Skin color is controlled by multiple genes in the body creating the range of skin color we see today. Evolutionary the benefit of different skin tones is a trade off between making enough vitamin D and not loosing folic acid. We need to be exposed to enough sunlight rays to make enough vitamin D but so much that we loose all our folic acid especially in the case of pregnant women. Those evolving in a northern colder climate with less sunlight would need light colored skin to get enough sun for vitamin D purposes and would not have to worry about loosing folic acid. Those evolving around the equator would need darker skin to protect the skin from the sun. Since they are exposed to a lot of sun getting enough Vitamin D isn't as much a problem as loosing the folic acid.

That makes sense, Aurone, but, I take it that you don't believe in a creator either. That's very interesting.

Well you're speaking from a more theological viewpoint....Maybe God just wanted as much of a variety in us humans, as there is in nature itself..look how many species and colors of flowers there are.
From a scientific viewpoint however, and this is where the theory of evolution didn't "jell" so well with many southerners in the US and I'm talking about your extremists like the KKK...who have the viewpoint of white supremacy. It's been proven by anthropologists that early mankind's beginnings began in Africa... meaning dark skinned humans..later they migrated to Asia where, through evolution the skin became a bit lighter..the last race to evolve was the white race. So ALL our beginnings were actually from Africa, and therefore the black race--that's why like I said, to white supremacists groups this just didn't go over so big

You really know your stuff, pyewacket. I posed this question with the intent of getting a sampling of how many of us believe that there was a Divine plan in our creation. The Bible mentions many different ethnicities. It is not simply a question of black and white as some people would have you believe. Yes, we all spring from the cradle of civilization, ergo, we are all the same under the skin.

As you say the Bible mentions many different ethnic groups as well, as in Babel maybe? While I see the more scientific viewpoint of explaining the creation of racial/ethnic groups I do believe too that there also had to be a Divine reason behind it all--I do believe in the existence of something definitely higher than us.

Im sorry to be a bit of a spoilsport on this discussion, but i do not believe in god, and neither am i a religious person. My answer to the question posed is the sympal logical and proved answer... the darker colored people have grown up in areas with lots of sun, africa for example... or have been born from a dark colored person...

I agree, holtinator, but who decided where to put each of these people?

I suppose it was not "GOD"s decision. So it is not a smart idea to think about it.

So, Dolcerina, whose decision was it then? I believe that God is our Creator and that He makes all the decisions.

That is indeed a very insightful theory! i like it! I have always believed that different complexions were to do with where we originally come from in this world - for instance I am so pale I have to stay out of the sun or I would frazzle - I would have no chance in a very hot climate! I am trying to remember the details of one theory that I loved and it was all about brightening up the world with a rainbow of skin, hair and eye colour - if I remember it I will get back to you! xxx

Yes, mummymo, but people have in the past, and can now adapt to whatever environment they happen to find themselves placed in. That is because of the indomitable human spirit-and the will to survive. I believe that God wanted us to be different colors in order to teach us that we are all the same under the skin. Some people never learn this, but the lucky ones do.

that is good thinking. also HE made us different from each other , many tribes, many nations, so that we know each other, it is diversity. the more we see the more we learn, it is a part of our knowledge package, same with different cultures, that is also why we travel to learn, that is also why the colors to know each other and also to know that GOD loves us , we may be of many colors but HIS love for us is the same, it is a sign also to show us HIS mercy in a way.
smiles, apple.

Very good points, apple. Your response brought to mind something my mother always used to say: "If we don't all learn to get along here on earth, we will not make it to heaven."

If its from the religious perspective I can see it the way you posed it Worldwise. Additionally, this can seem like a test for humanity in general, for them to overcome the minor differences in order to unite under common sovereignty. From the scientific perspective its due to skin pigments adapting to certain climates and elevations of the earth. It shows current humanity comes from all corners of the world as opposed to a singular location.

God is creative in making us into different races. He is a God of varieties and skin color is just one of His great artistic talent. Who knows? Time will come that everything will be revealed. Even the most intelligent human being cannot comprehend the wholeness of God for it is unlikely that the finite mind of a human person is capable of containing an infinite God! :) Nevertheless, I don't give much a fuss about skin color, though God strategically placed darker skin tone races to sunny areas for protection, regardless of the real reason I live that to God. We are still made in His image and that what matters to me. Rather than explaining why people are of different colors, I would rather like to meet people of different races welcome me when I enter heaven to be with God through Jesus Christ! Now, that would be a colorful entrance! Don't you think? P.S. "Life would be boring without colors and varieties". God bless!

Your answer, ssf, is much to simple to address such a serious issue. Nothing regarding our being here is purely biological. Exactly what is it that you don't agree with me on?

i think with increase in exposure to sunlight there is an increase in the melanin pigmentation.this pigment is the incredient necessary for the coloring of the skin.lesser exposure to sun means little or no coloring.but remember red and yellow, black and white all are precious in His sight.

I don't think there is a definitive answer to this, I'm not bothered what colour people are, its whats inside them that counts, not what is outside. But you only have to go to any beach to see white people trying to get a tan, and there are a number of black people who try to lighten their skin colour as well, so some time in the distant future everyone may end up the same colour.

I can partly agree with you. But the true being, which is comprised of the spirit knows no color or boundries of any kind. We are so used to refering to a person's color because of the conditioning we all have been handed down. Of course, color does not matter one bit towards anything. But I think God likes color because look at the colorful universe and see that man has much the same colorful appearance. If all men and women were the same color, the small persons of the earth would still find some other feature to compare and complain about.

Ehm, worldwise1, God has a purpose for man that is why he made us unique, that is having different colors. color is just a covering, and also to differentiate one race to the other. but the purpose he has in mind when creating us are different. what matter is to discover His purpose for you and pursue it.

That's very well stated, okwusman. I believe also that we were created with a purpose in mind and that the skin color is incidental to how we ultimately live out our lives.

Hi!, Well, just as you get fed up with eating the same food over & over again, you would get fed up by seeing the same colour faces. Variety is the spice of life in every aspect.GOD does everything with a purpose. So lets not question HIM , but accept however HE has made us & whatever HE has given us with all our heart & appreciate HIS CREATION!!
GOD BLESS!!

Well i really think it's a question of biological process. However as they say, variety is the spice of life. It's that variety which creates all the different feelings people have, about practically anything. All the variety makes life interesting, and I guess that's how God intended it!
