A Day with the Grandkids

Three of our grandchildren spent the night with us last night. Hubby did the fun stuff with them by chasing them around the house and acting like a goofball. The kids love it when he is a dork. Our oldest grandson wanted to sit with his Opa and Uncle Gregg in the computer room while they played Battlefield. The youngest grandson and my oldest granddaughter decided to watch "The Legend of Zorro" with me. I popped a huge bowl of popcorn and we munched on the buttery snack and talked about the movie as it went along. Most kids want to stay up late if the can. These kids are the exception to that rule. At 9:30 they all were having a difficult time keeping their eyes open and asked if it was okay for them to go to bed! We gave them hugs and kisses and tucked them in for the night. We finished watching the movie and talked about places we could take the kids on Saturday. The ideas went from no cost to $20 per person. We opted to go to the flea market. Saturday morning, our youngest grandchild wakes and comes next to the bed and just stands there until I wake from having his eyes bore into my head. He said he was awake and wanted to know what he could do now. I told him to climb in bed with us. This has been a routine with him since he was a toddler. The difference is that now that he is 6-years old, he doesn't go back to sleep once he is awake. It wasn't long until I was kicked out of the bed. The old kid and the young kid were horsing around. It was 7:30 and time to start breakfast. The other kids were now awake and heading in the direction of the ruckous. I asked if anyone wanted to help with breakfast and quickly found that to have fallen on deaf ears. Who wants to make breakfast when you can horse around with Opa! After breakfast the kids pulled out the race track and wanted to play with it. Hubby helped them assemble the track while I cleaned up the kitchen. After about a half hour of watching cars go round and round they became bored and went off in search of something else. They were soon rounded up and told to pick up the track. By 10:30 we finally decided to hit the road. The kids were excited to know that they were going to the flea market. I was surprised that they didn't ask if they would be able to buy something. The drive to the flea market is about 30-40 minutes. But today, it took over an hour. The small tourist town was filled with people and the main street was backed up with traffic that moved at a snail's pace. Once at the flea market the boys went off with Opa and my granddaughter went with me. My granddaughter is going to be quite a little shopper. She can sniff out a bargain as good as her Oma! We went from one side of the row to the other. We saw jewelery, leather pocketbooks, kitchen towels, placemats, baked goods, antiques, paperback books, and old toys. She spied a lavendar color visor that she commented on how much she liked. It was a bargain at 50 cents. I bought it for her. She put it on and didn't take if off for the rest of the day. We had nearly made it up the first row when the boys returned from looking around. I told my granddaughter that it was nice to have another female to shop with that truly enjoyed shopping. That made her smile. We followed the boys around to the next row. There was the usual items for $1 or 2 for $1. I call it the flea market dollar store. I told my grandsons to pick out something for themselves. My granddaughter was happy with her visor even though I told her that she could get something too. I found a pack of 9-volt batteries and a 2 pk of cotton gloves with finger grips. The boys found a light up top and a chess game. I did find other things I wanted to buy, but decided to wait until another day. My daughter, Celisa's birthday is on the 8th. I was searching the jewelry tables for something unique. I found a few things that came close, but not close enough. The one that I did find had no pricing on the items. They were clearly handmade and he didn't offer a price and I didn't bother to ask. We were drawn closer to the food concession by the incredible smells that filled the air. Driven by hunger we stood near the wagon and began to read the menu and the prices. The last time we were there you could get 2 hot dogs for $1.50. They were now $2 a piece! That would have been $10 for 5 hot dogs. No sale. We found a vendor that was selling apples and peaches. The peaches were too hard for immediate consumption so I bought 5 nice apples for $1.00. As we munched on our apples we headed back for the car. On the road back to town we decided to stop at the local grocery store to pick up sandwiches and drinks and go to the lake for a picnic lunch. There were few sandwiches to choose from. Hubby chose a sandwich and the kids chose "Lunchables", I chose some popcorn chicken. The "Lunchables" come with a drink and a sweet too. We added a quart of milk and some snack cakes to our cart. At the lake the kids were so tickled that we would let them take a dip if the water wasn't too cold. We first dined on our lunch and then hubby took then down the steep embankment to the water's edge. Not having planned on the picnic or the swimming, we let them go in the water in their skivvies. The first to go in was my granddaughter. She was also the first one out! The younger grandson went in and got wet enough to know it was too cold for him too. Instead of swimming, they tossed stones in the water. The sun was warm and the day was quickly going by. The kids played a game of chase while I sat with my hubby on the picnic table and watched the boats on the water. It was a delightful day filled with warm memories.

That is a nice story of a day with the grandchildren. I will not comment on it. We are going to see our granddaughter tomorrow, and on the 11th of next month, she is going for her baptism. I really should get my husband to take some pictures of her. We cannot do what you do, go out for a drive and get hot dogs and apples, etc. It is awfully cool here, the fall weather has arrived, and unlike down south there, our Thanksgiving is tomorrow. So we are going to have ham, potatoes, salad , and green beans with red pepper plus a desert my son and daughter-in-law brought over. I wish the social worker had allowed us to adopt more children, so I could have had more grandchildren to enjoy. Sigh!!!

I just loved this post. Aren't grandchildren the best. Sounds like you and I have something in common re: our grandchildren, they're very good reasonable kids. WOW that sure sounds like an awesome flee market you have there. The prices are dirt cheap compared to here. We have to pay 1.00 an apple in our store here. I couldn't believe it. Take care my friend.

Holy cow, a dollar an apple! That is highway robbery! The vendor actually wanted 25 cents per apple, but I was scrounging in my purse for another quarter and the vendor said he would take a dollar for the 5 apples. The kids had such a great time looking around and searching for treasures. Hubby found some that he would have loved to have for himself, but the frugal side of him kicked in and he walked away from the item.

I can't tell you how warm and fuzzy that made me feel. You are so fortunate to have your grandchildren near you. My grandson, (hard to believe he will be turning 2 in November), lives in Tucson, and I am in Oregon. I only get to see him maybe once or twice a year. I miss him so much. Good news though, my step-son and his wife are having a baby in the spring and they live about 25 miles away. I can't wait to spoil that one. Just call me Grammy on a shopping spree, lol. Treasure those memories and when you are feeling down, think about them and the blessings they have brought to your life. Hugs my friend.

I would go crazy if my grandkids lived so far away. There was a time when my grandson lived nearly 2 1/2 hours away. I never got to see him.

The kids so love spending the night with us. They begged us for an overnight a few weeks ago. We had to say no because of the timing. It crushed me to have to deny them this simple little pleasure.

Journal of Love - Journal of love for the grandchildren
Oh wow what a wonderful time this is for you, I think sometimes grandparents are happier with grandchildren than they are with their own, sounds like you have a wonderful loving family, that so nice to hear these days, I hope you are writing all these thing into a time capsual type journal, you are a very good writer and what a lovely thing it would be to pass on to the Grand kids, something I think in years to come would set them on the right track to good relationships as we really do learn from example....

Posting the stories on MyLot and Gather have given me ways to get out my feelings. I hope to put them in a book for them to reference in their later years.

That sounds like a perfect weekend with the grandkids, Elusive. I can guess they got as much pleasure out of it as you and hubby. Your story bought to mind the fun I used to have with my grandkids when they were growing up. They really enjoyed coming to my house to sleep over. Now that they are all young adults I really miss those times. That is why we should enjoy them while they are growing up-before they get too busy for us to enjoy anymore, lol.

Good point! I often tell my husband that soon they will be too old for us and we will be the ones begging for their company. Time flies so fast and before you know it, they will be having families of their own.
