Since so many of us think of our pets as family, when one of our beloved pets gets sick or injured, we might like to know that others could send prayers for our pet's healing needs. Why not? We often ask for prayers for our own healing needs or of loved ones, so why not for our pets?At this time I am indeed in need of some of you folks sending some prayers my way for my black kitty Pyewacket, the inspiration of my user name. He's always had problems with his one ear...those dreaded ear mites. I do clean his ears out quite regularly, but I admit I have been a bit slack lately. Just the other day, I gasped as I noticed that now he has a fairly large lump, no doubt an abscess under and on the side of the one ear that has always bothered him. I have no means to take him to a vet. In fact, I would have to find a new vet, as my old one retired. So I did however, get in contact with my pet rescuer friend who is upstate (NY), who told me to make sure I clean out his ear daily with drops of baby oil, and she was going to send down "Ear Clean" and also a supply of pet strength antibiotics--I should be getting that tomorrow. Hopefully, the antibiotic will get rid of the abscess and along with my diligent cleaning out of his ears should solve the problem. But I'm still naturally worried about my kitty. If any of you have any knowledge too of any other ideas to bring down an abscess with a pet let me know...I'm hoping the antibiotics will do the trick and it will drain itself...but if you have any other suggestions would love to hear. So I would really appreciate it if you could send some prayers over for my Pyewacket's complete healing.

Sending prayers your way for your kitty!! Sounds like you have an awesome pet rescuer friend to send you supplies like that. Ask her if peroxide would help in cleaning out the ear? I'm no vet but it sounds like it should work. Let us know how your cat is doing...keep us updated!

Thanks for sharing that info. I thought I remembered that it was ok to use on pets. That should help draw out the infection. Maybe we will get an update on him soon!

Poor Pye - both of you.... I had a cat that had a real problem with earmites, I hear that a drop of - I think - advantage in the ear will kill them, but I would wait until the abcess is better. They say that baby oil will suffocate them, but I've never had luck with it, does clean out the gunk tho. Once the abcess is cleared up, don't be afraid to rub the ear to get the meds in - he'll let you know when its too much for him. I hope the best for him, I know you'll give him the best of care.

I wouldn't because it might rupture in the wrong direction. You don't want it to go into the ear or under the skin.

I was asking my pet rescuer friend if I should give that abscess hot soaks to encourage it to pop..but she said no--what do you think? Think the antibiotics will do the trick alone?

You may rest assured, pyewacket, that my prayers will be added to the many of our members here on MyLot for your kitty. Of course prayer helps them too. They are just as much a part of the family as any human. Pyewacket is such a beautiful cat.

Oh I hate to hear he is having problems. I know those ear mites can be quite awful. As for the abscess, if you do decide to try to get it to come to a head so you can pop it, mush a piece of bread with just enough hot water added to get it mushy. Place that between hot water soaked gauze. Place on the spot. Let soak at least 8 hours for best results, but with a cat, as long as you can get him to leave it on!lol I have used this on a boil and had several people come back and tell me how well it worked after suggesting it to them

He's a lovely cat. There is a condition, and I can't remember the proper name of it, but it's caused by the cat scratching at it's ear and it's an abcess - like swelling of the ear. It's filled with fluid, and is not an infection like an abcess. A vet will lance it and drain the fluid. If that's not done, the condition will eventually sort itself out but the ear will collapse and present a crumpled appearance. Now I don't know if this is what Pyewacket has - it may be in fact an infection and if you can't take him to a vet, then I think that what you are doing is probably the best course of action.

I know that condition. Some of my former kitties had that..it winds up being "cauliflower" ear..But this is different as it's not in or on the ear but underneath the ear..I just hope those antibiotics work

Aww Pye, my prayers and get better vibes are with your little Pye. I know how worried one can get when your pet has something wrong. I used to freak out and think my cat was deathly ill everytime she would sneeze. It's only natural to worry. One thing though, are you sure it's ear mites? My cat has problems with her ears since the day I got her, lots of buildup in her ears and I have to clean them like every other day. Well every vet I'd take her to assured me that she didn't have ear mites. Finally one good vet told me the cause... allergies. Kitties get build up when they have allergies and itchy ears too. I notice that when I'm careful about the things I use to clean (especially the carpet) that it gets better. If I don't vacum frequently, here ears get itchy. And in the spring and fall... all the pollen drives her poor ears (and my nose) nuts. So maybe it could be allergies if it's a problem that's always been there? Just a thought. Oh and I've read that hydrogen peroxide works well for problems with pets, like bumps and bites and things. I can't remember the site but it's one that has holistic pet care on it. If I find the site, I'll send it to ya. Good Luck!

No..don't think it's allergies. I'm very careful what I use to clean with as I don't like chemically things myself. I don't have to worry about vacuuming as I ripped up the carpeting long time ago, but do dust in general for everywhere, and mop the wood floors with natural cleaners. Sure hope you can find that holistic pet care site..would love to see it..might get ideas from it

Consider prayers sent along with fast healing. Poor, poor Pye. All I know about ear mites is that they burrow under the skin, lay their eggs, and three weeks later the babies arrive, and it's all repeated again. It is a long process and takes many weeks of constant cleaning to get rid of them. They are also contagious to any other pets. The abscess should drain on its own unless a vet lances it and I know you can't get to one. I'm not sure if you should help it along or not...I know I'd want to also. The antibiotic should take care of the abscess also but the waiting is the hardest part. Cleaning them out daily with the oil is very important for smothering the little annoying critters. I hope all works out quickly and Pye is healed fast...Christmas brings out miracles and I hope this is one of them for you........sending prayers immediately and good thoughts coming your way.

Yes I'm fidgety to try to drain that abscess out myself...Having been around kitties all my life I'm practically a vet myself...LOL Sent an email to my pet rescuer friend about that so waiting to hear from her. Can't be bothering him too much as he's still eating his usual piggy self..good sign there

I really hope you get what you need for your cat. I know here in LA we have free clinics or really cheap ones if you say you found the cat on th st. Not sure how it works there. I know what is like to have a insane vet bill it sucks plus you want to help as much as possible casue you love your pet. Also the antibiotics should work well it will kill the infection and any other things going on before they get worse. YOu can also clean out his ear then put some fresh aloe just a tiny bit in there that can also help I use it when my cats get a gunky eye and it works well so you can try that. I hope he gets better my regards and prayers go out to you and your family memeber

One thing you can make for sure is to have handy hydrogen peroxide. Make lite solution, don't use 3% peroxide inside the ear. If for inside cleaning, make solution of 50/50. You can always use 3% on his skin/fur. Use soft cotton and wipe it. You can do it once every 2 hours. DO NOT use oils, because this is not good for any infection and oils in general are not good for ear cleaning. For ear cleaning simple disinfectants are better. I know that oil base is used for natural herbal cleaners, but only as base for herbal solution. Lump doesn't mean abscess, so don't try to press it because it can get worse. I will pray for your cat to get better.

Thank you, my dogs are OK and my kitten is happy. Going back to your cat. Infection is caused by bacteria culture that grows without oxygen. Bringing in oxygen you can kill bacteria. You can also use peroxide or peroxide gel for all wounds, for people and for animals. You can add one tea spoon of 3% peroxide to water and use it as perfect mouth wash. Bacteria likes something sticky to grow up and oil is perfect for bacteria culture to grow. After infection is healed you better use special disinfecting solution for cats. I use one for my dogs. My older dog doesn’t like it. I just place one drop into her ear and than I gentle massage area behind her ear. Hope your kitten is better now....

Weird my pet rescuer friend swears by the baby oil to clean ears out. Will have to ask her about the hydrogen peroxide...even diluted though doesn't it still sting like a beech? I was thinking of something more natural as a compress soak...like a sage solution...don't ask..but I've used this myself for dozens of different healing needs. And thanks ever for your prayers...how are your dogs? Remember sometime ago you were coping with a sick dog..is he okay now?

Awwww, of course my "prayers" will be with your kitty, Pyewacket. This is an ideal time for me to send healing energies for him, and you're welcome to them. Naturally, you will need to use the antibiotics, suggested by your friend, but I might mention here that lavender oil is a very soothing remedy for wounds of this type, and not only soothing, but repellent to insects, so maybe it would deter the mites? It's certainly worth a try and I feel, perhaps, more effective than baby oil? It certainly won't harm your kitty and can be used neat on wounds. It's a good antiseptic also, so a good bet. I really hope the problems your kitty has are overcome soon, my friend. Brightest Blessings and a Merry Yule to you! x

Thank you for your prayers [uh, spells?? ;)]--think everyone's prayers have already been working..did an update on how he's doing. He's not too thrilled with me with all this "treatment" I've been giving him as he's the worst patient going..LOL But I think he knows and senses I'm trying to help him...he's now contently cuddled up on my bed...he hasn't been on my bed for the past few days/nights--like many animals when they are sick like to be left alone or kind of hide. So even to just see him on my bed like before makes me feel better and know he's healing

Awwwwwwww poor Pyewacket. It prolly hurts him too. Not sure what to do bout the abcess but all you need is to get some Revolution for cats which is an all-in-one application of drops to the neck for fleas, ticks, heartworm, and ear MITES. Tigger came to me with ear mites but after one application of Revolution, they went bye-bye for good. My animals use to always have ear mites so one day my vet mentioned Revolution in place of Frontline Plus for all my animals. Not one has suffered ear mites in the 3yrs. they have been on it. Now that my cats are indoors permanently, I only buy it for Domingo so he doesn't bring in the fleas. Lots of prayers are being sent for Pyewacket and make sure you give him lots of hugs and kisses for me please.

Yes it is. That's why I only buy it for Domingo. Try petmeds.com . Shoot, you need a prescription for it. Even thou your vet is retired, any way he can give you a prescription for it? You'll only need a few doses. Think I pay 15 bucks a dose for my dog. I forget how much it was for cats but I'm sure it's cheaper.
