How did you name your pet(s)?

Okay this struck me as a topic that would be fun. Maybe we can get to know some of our friends personalities by their responses. How did you name your pet? What prompted that specific name. I got Buster my beagle from my daughter years ago. She had gotten him from the Humane Society and he did have a name. She would yell at the dog when he got into trouble, "Ohhhh Buster you're in trouble." Her son said, "That's his name mom." So that name stuck. Funny thing is that my older brother visited a little while after I got Buster and his nickname is also Buster as in Buster brown Shoes. Anyhow he asked why I named my dog after him. HAHAHAHA! So do tell. I want to hear the stories about naming your pet(s). Thanks in advance all.

My chihuahua is called Wheezy. She was named when we got her, and it was taken off of the Jeffersons. My daughter named her cat Madison, not sure why. Then I named my cat snowball. He is white as snow with blue eyes. Needless to say, that both my daughters moved out and left me with all the pets! LOL

Cute. My wife had a chihuhua when we met and her name was Chico. My mom had one also that should have been called wheezy due to its breathing problems. It wheezed all the time. Hahahaha! Thanks.

We briefly owned an Irish Wolfhound named buster, he came with the name - he was such a love - but HUGE and had a tendency to knock our then toddler to the floor and that frightened me - so he went back to the previous owner with a 2 month supply of dog food to get her through till a new owner could be found.
we had another dog that we were told would get to be about knee high when we asked - so his name became Nehi. I really liked that name for a dog.

I have a great love of mythology and the gods, and when I was with my ex we got two beautiful cats which I chose the names for. For the beautiful ginger cat who I adored like a King I called Zeus and for his sister I called her Hera a beautiful Tabby, the names really suited their temperaments and I have to say that I loved him to bits, sadly when I said goodbye to my ex I also said goodbye to Zeus and Hera, but he will always be fondly remembered and he gave me 3 years of love and companionship.

Great topic!! Well I try to choose a name to match my pet's personality. When you first bring home a new pet, you are pretty much clueless. I usually take a few days to observe their behavior and get to know them. I find myself attaching little pet names sometimes. For instance, I kept a double dapple minature dachshund from a litter we had a couple of years ago. She is partially blind but such a smart cookie! And so sweet! I was torn between Dolly and Darlin'. So I named her Darlin' Dolly.
Now my macaw was such a clown and so much fun to watch that she reminded me of Lucille Ball clowning around. So I named her Lucy. I'm not sure she is a female, I've never had her DNA'd but that is what I related to fit her personality and Lucy stuck.
Back to the dogs, my daughter got the first miniature dachshund we had. He came home at 5 weeks and was a chocolate dachshund. We named him Fudge. He's a sweetheart too!
The next dachshund was a female. She was a red. She was petite and elegant. She reminded me of a proper lady and had such good manners. If she had been a person, she would be a lady back in the antebellum days wearing a long skirt and always lifting it up when she walked to avoid stepping on the skirt. So she became Annabelle.
Another female we have is Princess. She is my puppy that I kept from my daughter's first litter of puppies. She was one of Annabelle's puppies and so prissy. She was also gorgeous and got a bit attached to me and followed me everywhere. I named her Princess! She has royalty status :)
I have an African Grey that I bought as a pair. I lost one so this one is now a pet. He's tame, will sit on my hand and loves to make all kinds of noises. He's goofy and active. I named him Monkey :)
Thinking back to the puppies we had over the years. I used to always name them before they weaned and sold. I remember my kids got mad when a lady renamed one. She was a sable mini dachshund and they named her Abbey. I can't remember what her new name became but they were hot about that one. Another one was Tiger which I gave to the runt of the litter once. He was a little live wire :)
And by now I'm sure you are VERY sorry you asked so I will stop here. Haha. Have a good day!

Buster is a cute name. When we got our German Shepherd, my son was 5 years old and my hubby worked at a company called Comet. So my son wanted to name him Comet. My son also named our cat Corvette because he loves corvettes, that was only 2 1/2 years ago. We have a rabbit that is all white, so I named her sugar.

My first cat was named "Yogi"-Bear. she was a runt and the only survivor of her litter. when she was 6 weeks old, she was a little puffball. when you stood behind her, her little tail made her look like a minibear. lol.
My 2nd cat is named Houdini. we got her when she was a kitten. when we first brought her home she would be sitting in the middle of the floor, and then she was gone. we would look everywhere and all of a sudden she's back in the middle of the floor. and that's how she got her name. She over a year old now, and she still does her dissappearing acts, and she's not a small kitty anymore. lol
my 3rd pet is Misty, our lab/beagle. I found her when she was a puppy at a flea market that was full of smoke and rednecks. she looked miserable and mistreated. so i paid 50 bucks to bring her home. i wanted her to be called Lady. hubby said no. So i tried to come up w/ something close and said Missy...and he said MisTy. and when he said it, she perked her ears up. and that just stayed.

actually, Yogi is pretty smart. lol. she's the queen of the castle. you can only pet her with her permission. If you step on her, she will ignore/glare/and torment until you apologize. Torment means she will roll on the kitchen table, kick as much litter out of her box as she can, and knocking every single thing that's on a counter/shelf/table onto the floor. lol.

What a cute story Grandpa Bob. :)
With a horse I once had I named him Butterscotch because his coloring reminded me of one of those butterscotch candies that I used to buy at the store. He was just a foal when I first saw him and the first thought that came to my mind upon seeing him was that he reminded me of one of these candies. Unfortunately his color changed after a year or so and it turned to gray. Eeek! LOL His name did not match his coloring anymore! But he knew his name so it was too late to change it. LOL
When I was little my mom had a German Shepherd named Given. I never gave the name much thought until I got older and asked my mom about it. She told me it was because this dog was given to her (for free), so she named him Given. Talk about original, eh? LOL There were other pets that had silly names like a kitten she named San Mateo because she found him...guess where? In San Mateo Park! LOL

I got my first dog in 2004 and I had no idea what to call him but luckily he had a lovely pedigree name: Secret Party Circle. He has a mainly white coat with black patches that look like hidden circles when his coat grows. He is a poodle and has ordinary looking haircuts, nothing fancy. I called him Secret and it really suits him. In 2006 I got my second dog a plain black poodle, smaller than Secret. I called her Magic as it was a name I liked when selecting a possible name for her. I call her Magic Mayflower so her name sounds almost as long as Secret Party Circle. One of my friends calls Secret Barky and Magic Bitey. That is because he has a loud bark and when she was a puppy she used to nit. My son called her when she was a puppy Naughty Nipper! I am looking after my mum's white fronted Amazon and he was called Bingo by his first owner. She moved back to the states and gave him to my mum when I was 14 years old. I like your detail about Buster's name. Buster Brown Shoes is a superb name too.

Sammy is actually Samatha and Petie is named after the little rascals dog with the circle around his eye. Petie has one dark eye and one white eye. Abagail's name was Alice when I adopted her and I did not like that so she became Abagail or Abby or any other name I come up with when she is in trouble.

Well, I try to pick names that fit. Some names spring right out at us, like Tony, short for Antonio for the kitten I got from another mylot friend FROM San Antonio. Or Oliver, the orphan kitten. Cujo, my dog, was named by my roommate's neice because as a tiny puppy he growled at her. Rygel was named for a puppet character on Farscape. His white ears and appitite are like his namesake. Solo was a single birth kitten. Star was, before she got her name, refered to as a Siamese colored metorite and her whole name is Shooting Star. We got Ronnie (Chevron) at a gas station of the same brand. Taj is actually short for Ta Shuah - chinese for "Walks on Snow" and he has white feet. So, some stories about how my pets got names.

I have three cats. The oldest one is an orange tabby named Peaches, because she is the color of peaches. The middle one is a male tux named Frodo. The name just came to me one day when I was looking at him. So, I figured he was trying to tell me what his name was. The youngest one is a tortouise shell female named Spot, because I think it's funny to name a cat Spot and she is all spotty, too. We also have 4 kittens that are a week old. But, I won't name them unless we decide to keep them. Don't want to get attached enough to name them if we are going to give them away.

OK, this could be fun. Let me start with my horse, Biscuit. That isn't his registered name. His registered name is Tuff Glitter Bar. He is an American Quarter Horse. I bought him from the DeLayne Long Rodeo company. He had been bought by them because he was supposedly untrainable, so they put him in their bucking horse string. Well he bucked for awhile, but eventually he decided he didn't like to buck. So, Vicki Long told me about him and thought I might be able to do womthing with him. If I had not have bought him, his most likely destination would have been the dog food factory and he would have become,,, you guessed it, a doggie biscuit. We had some ups and downs, and usually during the downs I would say to him, "OK Biscuit, shall we try this again?" So the name Biscuit has kind of stuck with him. The gals I barrel race with all know him as Biscuit. My farrier knows him as Biscuit.
Then I have a couple Australian Cattle dogs (Red and Blue Heelers), Grady and Skeeter. I've had Grady for nearly 16 years now, which is old for a Heeler. Grady is a Red Heeler, and I got him from a guy with the last name Grady, and I figured it fit, so that's been his name forever. Then there's my Blue Heeler, Skeeter. Skeeter is almost a year old. My Grandpa always called me Skeeter. He passed away just over a year ago. In May last year, when I got this puppy, I thought to myself, that my Grandpa would have loved him, so I named him Skeeter, after what he called me. I guess in a way it's to honor my Grandpa, but also to remind me everyday of him.
I've got a cat named Spitz. Spitz had problems drinking from a bowl when he was a kitten and he would alwasy manage to stick his nose too deep in the bowl when he was drinking milk or water, so he would get it up his nose, then walk around spitting for a half hour. So he got named Spitz because that is what he does... He spits.
We also have a dog named Diddles. That wasn't his original name, but watching him just diddling around the yard, goofing off the way he does, we started calling him Diddles and it has stuck.
Then there's Thomas... Quite the regal name for an old barn cat that was on this farm before I bought it. He was a tom cat, so it fit. He's not a tom cat anymore, but he's still Thomas.

Honnestly, Ole Biscuit has been basically yard art for the last couple years, for a few reasons. First and foremost, he developed ulcers in his stomach and the vets at KSU vet med teaching hospital recommended I put him on the medication, and give him 6-8 months of no competition. He is a very high strung horse, and he would get very nervous before competition, but that's a whole other story I will write someday. Well, shortly after that diagnosis from the vets, my eldest child started competing in High School Rodeo. That cut into my competing considerably, as I was hauling him to his events. Which didn't bother me a bit really, as he went on to be the reserve champion team roper his last three years of high school for the state of Kansas. He qualified for the National High School Finals rodeo 3 years in a row, and his senior year, he finished 4th in the nation at nationals. He is now off to college on a full ride rodeo scholarship. Problem is.... I only have one horse trailer.... so, I had to let him take it to college with him, as he needs it to go to college rodeos, which is part of his scholarship. He is on the rodeo team. So, hopefully, this summer he'll save up enough money to get his own trailer, and I can have mine back and we can hit the road again.
But, when I do compete, I travel to rodeos sanctioned by the United Rodeo Association, which is actually older than the PRCA. I also compete in the Mid-States Rodeo Association, as well as National Barrel Horse Association and the ABRA, American Barrel Racers Association.
My son got his PRCA card at the beginning of this year, and has gone to a few PRCA rodeos, and he ran into a good friend of mine, June Holeman, who asked when I was going to get out on the road again because she thinks I need to get my PRCA card and go to the big money shows with old Biscuit. June is the oldest woman to ever qualify for the NFR.... she made it on a little horse named Sparky, who, by the way, she tried to trade with me for Biscuit shortly after we started barrel racing.
So, I suppose, when we get our wheels back, we'll be on the road.

Hello! Gee, I had a dalmatian, gorgeous dog, and we named him Don Quixote de la Mancha , as "la Mancha" means spot in Spanish. At this moment we have a minature black daschund which my daughter named "Terminator". Why? I have no clue, but the dog is quite neurotic and drives us crazy! On a recent trip out of town, I boarded him at the Vet's office and needless to say, when I returned they were very happy to see me. He told me you couldn't have named this dog any better, he is a true terminator! Well, he is famous or I should say infamous at the vet. I'll be going out of town again next month so my husband I will draw straws as to who is going to take him and pick him up. It's a bit embarrassing!Like picking up a naughty kid from school!
