http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/03/080326161643.htm this study shows that in 1969 50 percent of american children walked to school, today only 13 percent does. the study indicates that the main issue is safety, if parents don't feel the kids are safe they do not allow them to walk the streets, did you walk to school when you were young? does your children walk now (answer even if your kids are grown up) what means of transportation did they take? Why did they take transportation? My son is 31 we had no school in our district so he had to be bussed, (school bus) then for high school he went by public transportation, I walked to school in the 60's but we had a school in our district then, I lived three blocks away from it.

I did walk to and from school when I was younger because my family just didn't have the time to drive me around everywhere. But it was a nice walk through a wood and I always had a couple of friends to walk with so it was never a problem. As for whether or not I'll drive my kids to school, it depends on how far away the school is. I'd never make them walk miles just to get to school, but I certainly wouldn't drive them if the school was only a block or two away.

I know people who do that - drive their kids from only a little way away. It really annoys me because I think that if I can manage the 30 minute walk to take my son to school then other parents can manage 5 or 10 minutes!

I walked to school when I was young, and even when I went to high school, although I was at the end of the district. When I got married, and moved to Saskatchewan, my sons walked to school, but when we moved to Winnipeg, we wanted the best school for our boys and the school was out of the district, so they took the bus until we moved and then it was about three blocks away. When they went to high school, they went to different high schools, and they took the bus. I did not drive and we only had one car, until the boys were old enough to get theirs, but by then they were going to university, but then it was more convenient to take the bus.

The primary concern is safety, definitely. When I was in elementary and high school, I have a school service, but I can also walk my way home sometimes when it is not available. That was before, when the streets are safer and the people are kinder. But it's hard to trust people nowadays. I always let someone accompany my daughter in the school service. I feel she is too young to be left alone by herself.

yes i always walked to school since elementary to high school. i love doing this my my cousins and some of my friends. we are a group walking from house to our school. some funny stuff happen while on the road. i don't have kid yet, if i have, i will not allow to walk on the road to go school...the reason is safety!

These were the best times of being able to walk everywhere and anywhere from grade school to High school and if you rode the bus you were looked upon as weird. I loved the freedom of walking and continued that for my favorite way of getting around. Now living in Texas things are far and wide to get to so unless you want to walk miles you need a car. Its a shame my grandkids won't have that option to dangerous on rural roads.

I took the bus for awhile then I started walking to school. Walking to school woke me up, was easy to fall asleep on the bus.

Nope. It's too far to walk. I don't have any kids, but when I was younger, the school was too far to walk either. I didn't go to a school near my house though.. because my parents had a school in mind that they wanted me to go to, and I needed to travel.

When I was a child- I walked to school when I lived in town. We moved to the country when I was in 6th grade- from then on I rode the bus to school. I did drive myself once I hit 16. My daughter walks to school now- She walks with a friend to and from school. There are 4 girls that walk together- she is 11. This is the first year she has walked. When the kids get to the “middle school” if they live within a certain distance from the school they have to walk or get rides. No more buses. Saves the school district money. We live in the country- so starting next year- she will ride the bus again- unless she chooses to go to her friend’s.

I used to walk to my elementary shcool. It was right across the street from my grandparents house. I had to ride the bus when I got into junior high though because the school was about 5 miles away. I also had to ride the bus in senior high because it was far away from home also. My daughter has never walked to school. We have never lived close enough for her to do so and it is so dangerous these days for children to walk to school. Her schools are at leadt 5 miles away from home also.

well growing up i mainly had to ride a bus cuz the school was to far to walk to but when i started 6th grade we had moved and was only about a 10 minute walk to school soi wold walk to and from school. then in high school my mom worked right down the road from the school so i would go to work with her then walk the rest of the way then after school and friend of mine would pick me up. with my son now he rides the bus but in oklahoma the school wasn't even 3 blocks away and we had no bus there so i would drive him. i didn't feel safe walking around there so i would make my son walk. kinda sad how things have changed so much and for the worse. i remember walking to the park about 5 blocks away when i was little and no having to worry about a thing now if i can't see you then they have gone to far. it is really sad to think about.

I walked to school, even when school was quite a ways away, because we didn't have a bus and my mom wasn't willing to drive us. I drive both of my kids to school and they take the bus home. The bus comes way too early in the morning and it's a block and a half away. I walk down (if it's cold or raining I drive) to the bus stop to meet them when they come home from school. I can't let them walk to school, even if it's close by, because the town I grew up in isn't safe anymore.

My son walks back and forth to school everyday, but the school is only half a block away. The last school he went to was right next door, as in the fence was the only thing dividing one from the other. We have been really lucky that he hasn't been so far away that we've had to consider other options.

No, because our school is about 30 minutes ride from home so, it can't be done. We have our school service, which picks us up very early at 7 am.

I walked to school a lot growing up. Not always, sometimes one of my parents picked us up. But in this day in age, call me overprotective. I would be scared for my kids to walk! It's not the same world anymore like it was when we were kids.

I walked to school when I was a kid - back in the '60's. we walked about half a mile to the first school, and only a few blocks to the next one. I would sometimes walk to or from my jr. highs. the high schools I went to were too far to walk, tho one time I did try to walk home from the high school when I was in jr high football game. My mom picked me up about half way home. I was driving when I was a senior in high.

Nope. I never experienced walking to go to school. It's either I commute or we have a school service (school bus) to take us to the school and back home. Most of the schools that I've been to are pretty far from our house which makes walking an impossible task to do.
