Disgusting Habit

I work in the food field, not fast food restaurant but a public golf course. One customer comes in, eats lunch, takes his teeth out and wipes them with a napkin while he is sitting at a table for everyone to see what he's dong then puts them back in his mouth. He's an eldery gentleman who is educated, interesting to speak with and friendly. I've seen him do this several times. Isn't this why we have restrooms? One employee almost lost her lunch while watching this situation. I've never said anything to him because I don't want to seem rude but at the same time what he is doing is very rude. Would you make a comment to the man or let it go?

I grew up with people like that. Both my foster parents had false teeth and at every meal they would take out one set or the other to see if there was food caught in them or to clean them. It used to gross me out but after so many years of this I guess I kinda got used to it.
We used to go to card games and almost 100% of them had false teeth so it was funny when they would all have snacks at the end of the night. I wonder if anyone ever went home with the wrong teeth. :)

I agree with you about the restrooms, he needs to go there to clean his teeth if he has to clean them right then and it can't wait until he gets home. I am not sure about you being the one bringing this up to him unless you two are on very good friendship terms. Maybe the manager or whoever is in charge could bring it up to him?

That's definitely not a sight that i will wanna see.. If i see it, i think i will lose all my appetite.. It's just simply too disgusting.. Maybe he doesn't think so as it's own set of teeth after all.. But dun he consider about other ple's feelings?? And wat will he do, if he saw a customer vomitting into a empty bowl, and proceed to continue eating after that?? This old man simple has got no ethics.. I will surely go ahead and tell that it's disgusting..

I would say something that is such a disgusting thing to do especially when people around him are eating, being he is elderly he will probably get angry but oh well he needs to know he is making others sick and he needs to know he needs to be a little more curtious and do it in the privacy of the bathroom.

If it is a regular customer I would comment to him that it is disturbing some of the other customers and if he could to go to the rest room to clean his teeth. I worked in reastaurants for eight years and I say a lot of bizare things that I did not understand why people were doing that.

Maybe the guy doesn't realize he's making others sick to their stomach when he does this. Next time, maybe you could go up to him and quietly suggest he do that in the restroom from now on instead of at the table because it upsets the other customers and some of the employees.

I'm not sure it is your place to say anything, but if you feel that you are comfortable in doing so, I think I would just knowing that someone else said it almost made them sick to their stomach. I can't imagine taking it out like that, since I have a partial and don't ever want to take it out in public.

Hi There!
That is a little bit much I am afraid. However, if nobody has ever commented to him how is he going to know any better. It may just be a habit that he does not even think about. My father has false teeth and does the same thing...but never in public.
cheers,

I know that was not something that anyone wanted to see but you have to over look that. He's an older gentlemen; to him doing that is normal. Also you have to remember that he's a paying customer and they are always right no matter what they do in that type of setting. When it comes to teeth and you were a paying customer would you go in the bathroom. I know that is might be a site to watch but he's just being himself.

Actually he's not a paying customer. He volunteers his time where I work once in awhile. Not many people know he works there. He doesn't wear a work shirt. I think my boss needs to correct him and he can and will do it gracefully. I have a good boss. Thanks for responding.

Oh, I thought that he was a customer. Well still be nice about it even though he's there giving his free time. I don't think he will get offended but they have to be nice about it. Then again like i said, he might not even think that it bothers any one. He's use to doing that all of the time. Have a nice one.

Hi friend,That is absolutely disgusting. And I'm sorry, but to heck with being polite.
He is very impolite and certainly not thinking about anyone but himself. Not to mention, should a child see that, that would scare the pants off them.
No, I'm sorry, I would not be polite about the matter. You said he is an educated man, therefore he has all his faculties. He knows better. I think its just nobody has called him up on it.
It's one thing in the privacy of your own home, but in a restaurant or anywhere in public.
Yuuuuuck that just grosses me right out.

I would vomit if I had to eat while someone was doing that. My husband has this horrible habit that his father does as well and that they will be eating and get something stuck in their teeth and they will get something like a piece of plastic and sit there and use it like floss. I cant eat after seeing this it makes me sick. I always tell him how rude it is and for him to go to the bathroom or something but he wont and he gets mad that I say anything. I worked at a nursing home and there was a woman who used to take her teeth out at the end of the meal and use napkins and water to clean them after eating while she was still sitting next to the other residents who were eating. This would make everyone sick and the residents didnt want to eat when she would do this. She got very angry when told she needed to do this in the bathroom.

Yes!I do object for such type of neusence in public places. But as you said he is an elder gentlemen,by looking into his age don't you have sympathy for him.You can request him once to do such type of personal works either at home or in the wash room,I say its your duty too to guide a customer.

My husband does that, but discreetly. He goes to the men's room. In a way, I think it's funny, because older people don't give two hoots what you think, LOL.
You could say something, in a cute way like, "Mr. so and so, you have such a lovely smile. I want to remember you that way so could you remove your teeth in the men's room for me? That would keep me just remembering your great smile!"
He may ignore or not, but it's worth trying.
