Yes I know about losing weight, drinking lots of water, cutting down sodium, and staying calm, but I want to learn any way to prevent it besides the above, since I suspect my maternal grandmother had it. I do not know about my mother as she passed when I was a teenager, but I do know my grandmother avoided salt and she had problems with water retention so I suspect that she had a problem with high blood pressure.
I have been in our local bulk store and there is lots of stuff for heart disease, memory loss, etc. but I cannot see what can be recommended to prevent or keep high blood pressure from getting worse. I am interested in natural remedies please.

I love garlic and put it on everything, but I will stop at using it for dessert. So I guess that maybe without it, my blood pressure would have gone up higher. I guess you mean the fresh Garlic, not the garlic powder you get in the containers, do you? And I gather it is the oil in the garlic that helps.

The thing is, you have to know what causes your high blood pressure to help prevent it form going up. If your grandmother avoided salt and your mom has high blood pressure that is sodium related, then just avoid too much sodium. Some people have high blood pressure due to their kidneys or just genetics and there is nothing - other than medicine - that you can do about that.
Eating healthy and exercise is the best way to control your blood pressure and your weight.

Lifestyle change approaches:
Diet: DASH Diet (not to be confused with the no-salt substitute)
Exercise: T'ai Chi, according to www.taichiday.org in their library section about t'ai chi and blood pressure, t'ai chi can lower blood pressue
Relaxation and Breathing: www.resperate.com has a machine to help you learn how to breath correctly and relax. People who are tense tend to breath more shallowly and/or differently from people who relax and therefore that can drive BP up.
Herbs: Everyone has given you quite a list, but raw garlic and Hawthorn are the ones most recommended. Actually anything in the onion, garlic, leek family is good.

Not sure why this ended up here. I had tried to put it at the end, but it came up here for some reason. Sorry.

I am taking online singing lessons and they tell you you have to breathe from your diaphragm and that helps with my breathing. I sometimes do not know why your post ended up here. I did check that resperator machine and I do not know if it is available to be shipped to Canada. We have some very greedy duty and customs laws, and it seems that the prices are usually raised at least a third before they get here.

My grandmother swore by garlic. I also know that fiber, oatmeal, for instance, helps. Anything that lowers your cholesterol, reduces the chance of heart attack, makes your blood pressure lower. Also meditating, and visualizing things to calm your spirit help.

Recite favorite Bible verses to calm and soothe yourself. Pray, with a thankful heart, thinking about all the good things in your life.I know that you know lots of Bible verses. Choose something like the twenty third Psalm and visualize each verse. Cheerios tells you it will help you. It is a little too hot for oatmeal. Eat healthy, and just do not worry, think on things that are good and uplifting.

I do eat a lot of garlic, but I have not had any oatmeal (I guess Honey and Nut Cheerios do not count) for at least a week. I do like the idea of not worrying, not much into meditating though, but I do have a good memory. And I have to stop worrying.

I can do that. I love to read the Bible. I do have to eat healthier. Luckily I got a new fridge so now I do not have to worry about buying those salad packages, I can now keep the lettuce longer. It is now cold enough for oatmeal. I have to keep from worrying. I told my friend please do not tell me anything that causes me to worry. She happens to do that. We were at the supper last night and she said something about what if they run out of soup and I said please don't tell me that, because I am the one who thinks of the worse that could happen. And of course, I sort of imagined that the only soup left was potato soup and I can't have that.
Then before that she said the gym where we help the supper would be too full because there were three churches attending.

I already checked that site and I made a bookmark about it. Thanks for the link though. Some of the things I do already, so I will try to follow the other suggestions. I would rather do that then have to take a punch of pills that would cost a lot. I do use a No Salt product and I am trying to get my husband to take less salt as well.

My mother has high blood pressure and takes medication for it and I think she is on it for life. She also eats healthier and has lost weight too but I think there are other issues going on there (depressed).
I don't know of any natural remedies but if you don't mind, I might just take some ideas others post and send them to her too. She wants to get off her medication.

My grandmother was not on medication, but she did cut down on her salt, but she also had water retention, and I do not know if that also is a symptom of high blood pressure. I did read that having nose bleeds is a symptom, and I have had them every now and again. My brother used to get them quite a bit and we both did as youngsters, so i guess that could be a sign. Anyway I hope your mother gets better and gets off of her medicine.

I don't know if I'll put this on the same as a natural remedy, but when I was taking a Nutrition class at college, my instructor stated that whenever they tell you that you may have high blood pressure, by all means tell the doctor to give you a month. Start walking, change your diet, do what it takes to get you hypertension down because once you start taking the pills, it's for LIFE!! So I ask that you adopt a regimen that will allow you to lower your blood pressure and live a more proactive life instead of being governed by pills.

I have started to do more exercise, but it is the diet. I eat a lot of salads, but some days, we have sausages and I do not think that is any good. I will do anything to keep from taking the pills so that is why I am here asking. I did get some good ideas. I will have get my blood pressure testing to see if i am doing any good though.

I am 65, but I am young for my age. I have been mistaken for someone in their forties. I have relatives on both sides who lived way into their nineties, and one hundreds. Oh and I lived a sheltered life and did not make that much money.

I also use Mrs. Dash salt and I use the McCormick's no salt added that they have up here in Canada. I like the kind that has chilis in it rather than the plain herb and vegetable kind. I do not have high blood pressure yet, but I do know that worrying is bad for me and I have to lose some weight. I do not want to get to the point where I have to take a bunch of pills and want to learn to make sure that never happens.

That sucks. It seems if you smoke and decide to quit then your lung goes back to what it was before, but if you have a heart attack and get high blood pressure, then you are stuck with having to take those pills for the rest of your life.

I can promise you right now you will absolutely hate the tastem of it, but if used right there is nothing better than Strauss Heartdrops. I even had the heart surgeon tell me to continue taking the drops. Expensive tastes bad but it's a live savor.

My great-great-grandmother used to use cayenne pepper in a lot of the things that she cooked. She said that it improved blood circulation, therefore bringing down blood pressure. I don't know how true that is, because I am not too much for hot foods, so I never used it. But you could look that up on the internet and see if there are any articles collaborating that opinion.

I will look it up and see if there is an correlation. I do use a lot of cayenne pepper when I cook hot food and I will add cayenne pepper in salad dressing, coleslaw, and also when I make spaghetti and meatballs. I did find these links http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/cayenne2.html#PRESSURE

I did not know if it helps with high blood pressure. I have used it to help me get over a cold and it does work.

I found most information on the About site, and I think the link is here in this discussion. I heard that garlic is good for you, but apparently it relates to a certain type of high blood pressure, and there is a kind brought on by having too much sugar. I have to check into that. and a lot of the information requires I buy a lot of herbs that cost a bit much.

Let me know if you find something one way or another. I am not too sure on this information. I would like to know myself, so I can tell my mom and grandma, since my great-great-grandmother either never relayed the information to them, or they have forgotten it. They both like hot foods way more than me, so this will be a welcome addition into their diet.
Its my late Great-Great Grandmother's birthday today!!! I miss you so much!

It would be a good idea to alkalinize the blood which means eating vegetables, fruits and drinking tea and fruit juices. Meat tends to acidify the blood which really is trouble for the body.

I love green tea but have not seen that much oolong tea here. I cannot drink that much black tea as I cannot take too much of the tanin. The herb teas here are the same price as regular tea. Of course we have to buy them. Too cold to grow them here.

I am not a vegetarian or a vegan, so going without meat is not an option, but I will eat more vegetables. Fruits when we get them disappear in a few days before groceries, but I do drink a lot of tea. Do you mean herbal teas or green teas or both?

I just drink regular tea, green or oolong tea or black tea. Herbal tea tends to be more expensive and specialized and I just drink the regular ones. By the way, I also eat meat but I counter the acidifying effect by drinking lots of tea. I have my own tea plants the leaves of which I air-dry and I can drink as much tea as I want and sometimes I add fresh oregano and honey.

Have you tried Flaxseed? It's supposed to be very good for that and for lowering cholesterol. It worked for me!
Aspirin will also help with the BP, thinning the blood so it can flow easier. I know it's not natural, but you might ask your doctor about it.

Keep eating your fruits that are high in potassium, like oranges and bananas. You need to have your potassium in balance with your sodium (salt). Keep eating flaxseed in your food, and relax. Those blood pressure machines at the stores are not all that accurate. You do need to see about getting it checked. Senior centers here have a screening day once a month. Nurses who attend my church do a blood pressure screening a couple of times a month. Those kinds of choices are better.

I will be seeing the doctor in October (people are dying up here as there are too few doctors for the patients) and I hope to get healthier. I do not think I have high blood pressure, but I was told to keep calm and not to worry.

I try flaxseed, and I do not know how long it would take before it has any effect. I do know I have to watch my sodium and look for food that has less sodium. I do not take aspirin that much but I use a lot of vinegar.

Garlic is one of the natural remedies for high blood pressure. You can crush it then put it in boiling water and let it cool and drink it.

In case of high blood pressure patients sodium chloride i.e salt is very dangerous. In case of high blood pressure we have to avoid any fatty food which can increase our cholesterol. I think in case of high blood pressure we can use the root of Rouvolfia root. By making past of this root we can take which can control our blood pressure.

I would rather use natural remedies then take pills. In fact, I would rather that I do not get high blood pressure in the first place. I am reducing my salt intake, but I have a sweet tooth, not all the time but if I go without anything sweet for a while, I go on a binge and I want to avoid that.

Oats are well known for lowering blood pressure. A study done by US researchers in 2002 for the Journal of Family Practice where participants ate 137 grams of oats daily, found that 73% of participants were able to reduce their blood pressure medication. They also had lower 'bad' cholrestoral and better blood glucose levels.
Try having porrige or museuli for breakfast every morning and see if that makes a difference.

I have to agree with you in that I prefer natural remedies for prevention an so forth. I'm not sure what is good for high blood pressure right off the top of my head. If it comes to me I will be sure to let you know. I take garlic and it seems to help with my hot flashes. I take other supplements as well for different things such as mutlivitamin, cranberry, fish oil, vitamin c & d and I take B for energy.

I am past the hot flashes stage. I take multivitamins. I really have to get the cranberries out of the freezer. I do take other natural supplements as well including Vitamin C. And i get out a lot during the day and take yogurt as well as drink milk. So I figure that helps. I think garlic is good for it though.

I have to make sure I do not worry as much. My husband keeps telling me that we will have to move in a couple of years to a Senior's complex, but I heard that if you live in your own home, you will live longer and I do not want to die prematurely. And I am afraid that if we move to a Senior home, I will not live as long as I would have.

I should eat more garlic. Now what to do about the odor. I do use a lot in cooking, but I guess it is the raw garlic that is the best.
