Do you use oven mitts?

I really don't like oven mitts. I've never found a pair that worked. What I use is a towel folded, it stops me burning my hands and also you get a better grip on trays or casseroles.
My boyfriend insists on using the oven mitt and as a result I'm forever having to clean up spills in the oven as trays slip. What do you use? or if anyone has found a good make of oven mitt I may convert.

I usually end up using a wadded up towel. A lot of oven mitts are kind of thin and most of them fall apart if they get nasty and you have to wash them. When I'm in the kitchen, I usually have a towel over my shoulder, so it's more convenient than opening a drawer and trying to put on a mitt while opening the oven. The only oven mitt I use is one that's a lab mitt that's supposed to be used for handling hot glass and tools in a laboratory.

They are too thin aren't they and bulky. I tend to cook quickly so yeah it is too much hassle to get the mitt out when the towel is already there.

They're not very bulky at all. Don't most of us have at least a couple of burn scars on our fingers. Nobody remembers the gloves every time!

I haven't burnt myself for quite a while and it's usually my arms that get it most.

I often just use whatever is closest for me to grab...like you, just folded dishtowel or one dishtowel and 1 oven mitt. :) I do have a nice pair that my mom gave me from Pampered Chef that work really well and are the only oven mitts I use.

I may invest in some, thanx for that brimia. The one we have has definitely seen better days and was never much good anyway but must be worse now as it is fraying.

I think that's how I started just using a towel as there was nowhere to hang the oven mitts and there is always a towel close by. The other thing is they get really burnt and dirty looking. Has that happened to the pampered chefs ones and are they easy to use? I'm thinking of getting rid of the one we've got but then my boyfriend would just use it as an excuse to not cook again.

I absolutely cannot do without oven mitts. Always dread the tray or tin slipping off when I use a towel. Have a lovely new pair of mitts with the perfect grip.

I'm the complete opposite I dread a tray slipping or the mitt touching the food. Towels give me a better grip but I am on the lookout for a good pair.

They're just too bulky aren't they but I suppose they have to be to stop hands getting burned but why do folded towels work so well. Oven mitts don't do too well getting washed either so the fact that they get food on them isn't too good.

I have always used an oven mitt when I get a pizza out of the oven, which that is the only thing I cook in the over,I can understand why you do not like them because they can be a pain, and some of them are not that comfortable, and they do not fit right so I do not blame you for using a towel instead, because it sounds like a towel would work just as well.

I find with towels is that they are easier to get the right shape to grab the oven tray with. Casseroles are the worse thing for trying to use a mitt on, as they are too awkward and the last thing you want is for them to slip.
I'm also a bit disorganised in the kitchen but always have a towel with me when I cook so find it easier to use it, especially as mitts don't work well for me.

I agree sometimes a towel is easier since it fits better than an oven mitt, and I also agree the last thing you want is for something to slip and fall because you can not get a good grip on it,and I am sorry to hear that you are disorganized in the kitchen ,but at least you always have a towel with you, have a great day, good luck in your life, and Happy Posting my friend.

i prefer oven mitts, i usually use them and am uncomfortable not using them. my sister though does not like oven mitts. and she uses flat pot holders which i don't like. so you are like my sister, and i am like your boyfriend.

I just find them really cumbersome and they don't work and I'm not that sensitive to heat. I usually just use my fingers to move burgers from the oven tray to plate.

The only thing I use oven mitts for is decoration. I use towels or pot holders to take stuff out of the oven.

That is probably the best use for them. Is it because they just don't work?

There are two kinds of oven mitts in my kitchen and they're both huge leaps better than the old mitten-type ones. If there's a chance anything will get wet, I use the polyurethane ones that have recently been appearing in the stores. They're amazing! If things are going to be dry, I use something called Ove-Gloves. They look like sort of off-white gloves, and the fingers being separated allows a lot more flexibility than the mitten-type ones. They're great!
Now that I wrote that, why am I still medicating 2nd and 3rd degree burns from forgetting to put the oven mitt on when cooking last week?

Proper glove style ones sound the best as long as they are not too bulky. It does defeat the purpose, if you forget to put them on but I've done that as well usually with the grill.

I have always just used a tea towel folded up, I cannot use oven gloves at all. I feel like I am not gripping the tray right when I wear them it just makes things really awkward. I bought a single oven glove the other week thinking that might be a bit better, but nope it is not so back to using my towel!

Single mitts are worse than the two handed ones as I find I forget about the unprotected hand and try and grab the tray. Towels are just better and always around unlike mitts that disappear.

hey foxfire how r u ??
I dont use oven gloves either, why bother when a folded tea towel does the job just as good?? This is because I have never bought oven gloves and therefore use the closest thing to hand which is always a towel. My boyfriend also uses a towel when he is taking things out of the oven!!

I'm fine cinderella2007 and not getting burned because I use a folded towel. I wish I could get my boyfriend to use a towel. I'm forever washing the oven mitt as he gets it covered in food and it's such a tatty looking thing with the burns, fraying and food stains that just won't come out.

I had a good oven mitt at one time, I used it all the time, but my husband got a hold of it, and was using it outside and he never brought it back in, so I don't know what happened to it..lol. I will use a dishtowel most of the time to get things out of the oven, I do have some potholders, I'll use them sometimes but I can still feel the heat thru them. They do have those silicone kind of oven mitts, they're kinda like rubber but they won't melt, I was thinking about getting one of those and see how it works, its supposed to be able to stand high heat, I don't know, I'll find out..lol.

Those silicone ones sound interesting at least nothing would slip but would they stop the heat. Just don't let your husband use them though.

I use oven mitts. I have regular pot holders too, but the heat seems to go right through them. Same with a towel folded up. I would be more apt to drop everything with either of those, that's why I insist on the oven mitts.

The heat goes through the oven mitt I have but it wasn't that expensive. I never get heat going through the towel but it isn't a dish towel but a small towelling one, which seems to be fine folded up twice.

I dont use oven mitts as they seem to be sa little bit dangerous to me,I like you much prefer to use a tea towel a folded one,its easier to get in and out of the oven with and it protects your hands well enough.

They can be as you just can't get a proper grip and if you can it usually means they aren't thick enough do you get burned.

I'd love to find some that were better than my towel. The other thing is towels are a lot cheaper than mitts, so if they get burned it doesn't matter so much.

Up until very recently I used a folded towel too, the new oven mitt I've got is hard to grip things with and only covers one hand so anything I have to get out the oven with two hands I still use a towel for anyway. I prefer to use one of those two handed oven gloves as they are easier to grip things with and you can use both hands.

We just have a single one, which I never use. You do need both hands covered especially if you're like me and forget about the uncovered hand and grab the hot tray. Do you mean those joined oven gloves? I found them really awkward.

That's one of the reasons I like towels as they cover a larger area like your arms, which can get burned quite easily and I've had a few. Even single fold they do protect a bit.
@Foxfire1875 (2010)

Arms are the easiest thing to burn as you just don't think about them. Towels need to be folded enough to stop the heat and I've found that even just a single fold helps to stop you getting burned more because you feel it touching the oven than the actual material so pull away in time.

I always use oven mitts. I find them alot more helpful
the pot holders or a towel. I am always burning myself.
I have less of a chance getting burned if I use the mitts.
I try to get nice long thick ones. No too thick where I
can't work with them, just thick enough. They have too
be long enough to protect my arm since I have to be able
to reach inside the oven a good way in. Yes, it is good
when trying to wipe up spills too.

I usually get burned more with the mitt but then it isn't very long. The problem is they need to be thick enough to stop the heat but thin enough so that you can actually grab things. I just haven't found any yet.
