Death itself is bad enough

Everyone in Canada has no doubt heard about the horrific disaster aboard a Greyhound bus scheduled to Winnipeg Manitoba. For those that don't know what I'm talking about, there was a young man on the bus going home when some idiot with a big knife stabbed the boy and didn'y quit until he cut the boys head right off and displayed it to others. There's more gory details that I'm going to skip and this is my question. Isn't it bad enough when something happens to a love one causing death that we need to know every gory detail? Before you say it's the media or that's what makes the news Please try to see this in my direction. Does everyone need to know where and how each trickle of blood runs and do they have to reveal all this explicit detailing on the news so we can all see? Is it not already bad enough?

Of course I agree with you that reporting on every gory detail is not appropriate in a decent society but we no longer live in a decent society. The media is the way it is because society has supported this type of thing...rewarding them with ratings for being as horrific as possible in their reporting of an awful story. I really wish there was something that decent people could do to stop, or at least slow down this trend, but that's not going to happen. There is too much competition nowdays with print, television and the internet so everyone is out to get the scoop and the attention a really *good* scoop brings.

Of course I rated you a + based on the fact that your response is not only well worded but indeed the full truth of how our sick society operates. I love your idea
and wish we could slow down the trend. Thank You for your response.

I don't think it accommlishes anything to talk about the gory details, however you know how the news people are, they like to make it as bad a possible..Some people actually enjoy hearing all about every little detail, but not me..Its bad enough that someone is unnecessarally killed,i do not need to know every little stab...I have actually heard newsmen say and also others,it makes for a real good story, but i think its not necessary....

I had not heard about this, but I agree that it is terrible enough for the family of this young man without telling all of the gory details repeatedly on the news. I lived most of my life in the USA and they tend to sensationalize their news stories but here in Nicaragua where I now live it is even worse. They show all the gory details. I am sure that if it happened here and there was a camera around, it would be shown with all the gore on the news. A few months ago they showed a policeman being almost decapitated. A fugitive with a machete was resisting arrest and they were trying to capture him without killing him. Instead he killed one of the policemen. Although it has been months since they showed this on the news, the image is still burned into my memory and I can see it as clearly in my mind today as the day I first saw it. I can't imagine the pain that it caused the policeman's family.

I wish that the coverage of such tragic happenings would not be so explicit. There needs to be regulations regarding this so called freedom of speech. The families of the victims need to be taken into consideration.

I saw a little bit about that. I guess the media is just doing what we ask. After all, how many times do we see a wreck and realize that traffic has slowed, not to help, but to gawk. I guess God has his reasons why we as people frequently want to know so much about such terrible things. Personally, when I heard that a person was beheaded, I was astonished that one human being would do that to another. So sad.

Oh my gawddd. This is sick. Well I will just say that the media is always looking for the ratings so most will give the most details on any news storey to achieve this goal. Personally I hate the details. I hate all bad news, but that is what makes news news I reckon.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I do agree with you. I believe the media goes too far many times in their details and descriptions. It is bad enough that something bad happened, like the young lad getting stabbed and his head lopped off. That all they had to say or in a nicer way than I just did. I think they should think of the families in these cases. They don't need to know all of the details. Neither do I for that matter. Unless I have to tell the children not to be out and this is why. But then I'd just tell them the basics. At least until they caught the guy but they have this one. There is no need in all details.

No, we don't need to know all of the details. What I'm wondering is why no one tried to stop the guy when he started his knife attack on the victim. Even if it happened so fast, couldn't someone have hit him over the head with something? It kind of makes me angry that such horrific, exploitative details are included while leaving out other facts.

That is horrible and no.....we don't need all the gory details....I don't want to know them. And for the family it's almost sacreligious to flaunt their details for the public! They should get a handle on what is enough! I think it's very poor journalism!

Media has the duty to tell the news as it happens where it happens and how it happens. We can't blame them if they're showing everything in detail whether it's gory or not. They do this because it's the truth and personally I admire that. They can't dictate the circumstances, they just report it. On the other hand, we as a viewer can choose it to see it or not. It's in our power to turn off or change the channel of what we are watching. I think it's Ok to watch the gory stuff as long as we don't enjoy seeing it. We need to see to know and believe the story but we shouldn't enjoy watching it. My 1 cent.

I agree with you, there is enough violence all around and the gory details of such are not needed. I mean if the public should know about these things, it should be this happened, let's all pray for the families, end of story.
This is what gives some unstable individuals ideas of things to do, because the media explains to them through their reports just how to do it.
When my husband and I are watching the news and the newscaster starts going into details, my husband will yell, that's enough and change the channel.

I agree with you. I've reached the point where I rarely watch the evening news. I can get my weather on the weather channel and ignore the rest. TV has gotten so violent these days. Even usual shows I like seem to be so graphic anymore. Just tonight an episode of CSI was so graphic I had to change the channel. Its no wonder I'm watching things like animal planet and HGTV - its the only channels I can often find without blood and gore.

Hmm.... that's a tough one. I know what you are saying. I think he FAMILY should have the right to know i they want to know, but the gory details don't need to e spread all over the papers. I know exactly the case you are taking about. It was all over AM 740, and the people at the cafe were talking about it when I got here, the day it happened.

they did research on that and most people prefer bad news to good news, good news doesn't sell that well, and yes I do agree with you one hundred percent, we don't need all the gory details, but for some people that is exciting in a sick sort of way I think.
