When you say LOL, do you really Laugh Out Loud?

Philippines

I usually don't but I just type it anyway. I often encounter people online who would use "LOL". I also receive responses to my text messages with "LOL". Just few minutes back, the one I am chatting with kept typing it. So I just wondered, was she really laughing out loud? Or is "LOL" more like an emoticon nowadays? I also wonder if people who often use "LMAO" really laugh their A** out. LOL! Now, I am really laughing out loud!

LOL (laugh out loud) is essentially intended to make the reader being addressed to realize that the writer has intended the matter in question to be taken in the lighter mood. Specifically, lol may imply: -This is really funny; I know you are laughing overthere. -I'm just joking; don't take me seriously. -See how stupidly or foolishly I have behaved or acted. In the 3 examples given above, it is the first one that might actually induce a loud laughter in the reader at the other end. The other two might simply produce a smile or even an ordinary nod. I make use of lol often when I want my object to laugh over what I have written, whether it can evoke involuntary laughter or not, or when I mean not to be taken too seriously, or when I have done something that evokes shame.

Wow, very serious words...but then I don't understand...usually the word lol is used as a quick reply by the respondent and not the one who told a statement to be laughed at or not to be taken seriously.

I use 'haha' if I find something funny but I'm not physically laughing at it and I use LOL or LMAO if I am actually laughing

Most of the time I do. Why else type it, if it doesn't make you laugh out loud?

Coolness. Yeah the discussion is very good. For me the first time I ever heard the term I already asked what it means, because I might be saying a bad word. Here in the Philippines, there's a bad word 'ULOL'. So if you say it fast, it sounds like 'lol'...heehee.

Not really laughing out loud. But I am laughing inside my head when I use the emoticon . I don't really use the word LOL in online conversations. I use "hehe" when I laugh. Have a nice day!

yes. I do actually laugh out loud when I say lol. But not like a ha, ha, ha, but more of a giggle like hee, hee, hee. But most of the time I just say hee, hee, hee istead of lol anyways. It reminds me of how Peter from Family Guy laughs, but probably just because that's what I'm watching right now. I think that most people don't laugh though. I think that lol and lmao are both more of an emoticon. Well see ya later. Good discussion by the way.

I use it way too often I noticed, it is almost like an emoticon these days. Anyway I wish you could LMAO, that would be very convenient since I am definitly not lacking in the posterior, I would love to laugh some of it off!

LOL - after reading this I was laughing out loud. I often wonder the same thing about people. Do they find what I said really funny or are they just trying to make me feel good? I think LOL may not mean the person is actually laughing out loud, but they do find what you said or typed to be funny or comical.

Hi dolce, Honestly, I am not really laughing hard all the time...It's just like I am accustomed already to write LOL! almost every end of my statement and I do realize this also that " why i am tryping this where in fact I am not really laughing" LOL! But, a lot of times, I really mean my LOL!

It is funny you should ask this, I was considering this very thing when I was texting my hubby the other day and I used LOL. Although I only did a little chuckle, I just had visions of me laughing out loud with a huge braying laugh or something and it is the vision I have of someone whenever I see it! No, I do not really laugh out loud, I may chuckle slightly but not a huge belly laugh!

Sometimes when I use LOL, I am actually laughing out loud. There are some funny people on my lot, and I just want them to know I appreciate their humor. Sometimes, reading their discussions or responses to another discussion makes my day, because it made me laugh out loud. Sometimes, I read something funny or cute and just smile to myself. Some times I chuckle.
