Bill Maher was on Jay Leno a few nights back He made the comment Anything written on the internet NOT followed by LOL is considered to be true. No matter how outrageous. I've been thinking about that statement since then & watching. That statement seems to be more true than I'd like to believe. What is the most outrageous thing you have ever read on the internet & believed until proven wrong??? *** OR*** What is the most outrageous thing you've ever read on the internet that you did not believe???

Hey, few days back I have got a mail saying that 35% of scientists at NASA are Indians, I thought it might be true and even when my friends started telling me about this I was sure it was true. The mail was making every one believe to so much extent that one of the stupid local newspaper reporter has made an article in newspaper about this. Then the very next day the news paper published apologizing for the false report. I felt so naive to believe it was true lol. Now I learned my story and will not believe anything so easily without doing proper research over it :)

Yes, even newspapers make mistakes. So, it might be safer to fact check everything we read or watch!!!

No, I screen whatever I search. I usually check if the site is a blog or not. If it is an organizations site or not and other things. I tend to trust the sites that I know or the official sites of different organizations. As for the others, I dont usually use them as reference. The books can provide me the best references if I need to research on something.

My Hubby taught me something when we met...he'd worked as a corrections officer for 17 years at the state prisons...TRUST BUT VERIFY. I tend to follow this with things on the internet. Take the Presidental Race that we're having right now as a case in point, the media can pretty much print anything, ppl will say anything and everything can twisted depending on who ppl want it to benefit and I generally take it all with the attitude of it might or might not be true. But when I see a video with the words coming right out of someones mouth...well, that's pretty hard to deny.

Yes, politics & religion seem to be the two that get twisted the most!!! I've gotten to where I verify practically ALL my email before I forward to others!!!

Oh boy LadyM, I've read so much BS on the internet I can't even pick just one as the most outrageous. I read so much outrageous garbage here on myLot everyday that it makes my brain hurt sometimes.
I am a born skeptic so I believe virtually nothing online without checking multiple sources for facts first. Sometimes not even what I see on the news or read in the newspaper. So many stories are biased and taken out of context. I don't even believe pictures I see anymore. It's so easy to alter digital pictures or video with any number of programs like Photoshop. I'm even pretty good at it so I know how easy it is.
Bill Maher is so right, sometimes people are entirely too gullible!

I don't know the most outrageous, but I believe next to nothing I read on the net except maybe in wikipedia or something. Even that is suspect since it's reader-contributed.
My grandpa used to say never believe anything you hear and only half of what you read!

My grandpa used to say never believe anything you hear and only half of what you read & NOTHING you see!!!
Wikipedia seems to be a fairly reliable site & I search there a lot. However, since ANYONE can edit the information there, I do believe I'd check out their information before using as my ONLY source!!!

I'm a very suspicious person and don't believe ANYTHING I read - especially gossip about so-called celebrities in the paper. I've known about things which were misrepresented in papers, and people who were misquoted or whose words were twisted - so I basically take everything with a grain of salt until it is either verified in court or the person concerned confirms it, etc. The internet has spawned a load of urban myths, which are passed from person to person, gaining momentum as they go - good for a laugh, but not much else!

well, it depends on what i'm reading about... it is true that, not everything posted on the net can be trusted or can be taken under consideration...so, you just need to careful and do extra search on whatever you are looking for to get a basic healthy idea of what you are looking for...

do some research find out what is true or not ,
when i hear a story on the net i find out where it's from and what origin it came from like a place, or town or state ya know
cause some person one time found out my mum is an artist and they sent her this story of a dog who saved his owner and fellow soldiers from their captures over in Iraq and this dog got loose and killed the men holding them captive then helped his owner get free
well my mum had me look up the story on the internet to see if I could find a better picture of the dog, turns out it's a hoax
no dog ever recieved any medal for valor or bravery from over there
so if ya hear of stories or somebody sends ya something check it out first
look it up .
AND PLEASE DON'T TAKE THAT MAHER TO HEART HE'S AN A&&HOLE @@@
HE'S THE ONE THAT MADE THAT STORY ABOUT DON JOHNSON BIGGER THAN IT WAS
HE HAD EVERYBODY BELIEVING DON WAS BEING ARRESTED AND JAILED FOR MONEY LAUNDRYING

You would think an intelligent person would check out a story before forwarding it as real!!! However, I receive a lot of flawed information from seemingly intelligent people who I used to trust completely. Once I started fact checking various information, I found that some of my closest friends could not be trusted!!! So, now when I receive information even from trusted friends, I fact check it myself!!! I, too, received the information on the dog in Iraq (4 times no less). That story sounded so incredible that I felt it was untrue. Upon checking further, I found that to be a false story!!! In each of the 4 cases, I did a reply ALL stating that this was a false story asking that anyone forwarding such information to check the facts first. Several responded that they did not have the time. It took me less than 10 minutes to refute that story. So theirs are automatically checked FIRST!!!
As for Bill Maher, I did not hear him say anything about Don Johnson. Had I heard it, I would have done the same fact checking. Bill can be a little out there some times. After what you said, I did a check, the German government says he is no longer a suspect yet they are still filtering through the evidence found in his car....bureaucratic BS I do believe. I doubt that he was involved but maybe that's because he's a HOTTT HONEY!!!
I've gotten so anal, I fact check myself!!!

Knowledge is a combination of reliable sources. Not everything on the internet is wrong just as not everything on the net is right!!! Just be sure to research what you read to verify its usefulness.

I never believe things written anywhere, until I find out more. People can write to make things go their way. I have had articles written about me and they will edit the article to make it more news worthy and can twist it so that what I said in the interview is not always reflected in the actual article.
I think the alien children of stars are the most incredible, LOL. (And that is true, because I wrote, LOL, at the end!! LOL)

They got you too huh!!! My brother was in Last of the Mohicians with Daniel Day Lewis back in 1992. He gave an interview in which he said that the women loved being in the movie with Lewis because he was so good looking. She asked him Do you think he's good looking? My brother responded Just look at him. When the article came out is was written as if my brother was gay. ALL he was trying to say was the women thought Lewis was scrumptious & he was!!! His wife left him because she was so embarrassed...or at least that was the excuse she used!!!

Hi LadyMarissa,
The only thing I read on the internet is the news and Mylot discussions, because I have no interest in anything else because I don't understand it so I don't read anything I don't understand.

Definitely not especially all the urban legends like those e-mails saying that there is this gang who kidnaps you and steals your internal organs then leaves you alone in an ice cold bathtub alive and hoping you'll be brought to the hospital. Yes it is not true but we could still earn from it, like don't go out with complete strangers, beware of people who come near you at a bar and offer you a drink etc. So that's it for me but of course I have read more stories that are not true in the internet and I'm not believing all of them.

Yes, you can get a lot of good information from the internet. However, you do have to be careful to get your information from reputable sites. I have heard a lot of things repeated as fact just to prove a point. Few would try & refute it as they don't have the specific facts right there in front of them. I have even see church signs with the faulty facts displayed as truth.

The most outrageous thing I ever heard was we were going to be involved in a nuclear war by June. Well, June came and left and we are not involved in a nuclear war. I will tell ya something that I just heard.
Obama is a smoker-Biden has had two brain clips for brain bleeds. If either one of them passes or is in horrible health Nancy Pelosi will become the President. Hmmm. That one is worth looking up. This on the heels of people worrying about McCain's health. I guess I have some research to do. It is fun to hear what everyone else finds out to be fact and fiction.

Out of ALL that, I can confirm one thing. As Speaker of the House, Nancu Pelosi is third in line for the Presidency. If Obama & Biden or McCain & Palin both die then the Speaker of the House aka Pelosi will become President!!!
