Hello there srganesh!
There are some good defragmenting software that can be installed to do background defragmentation. I was using Diskeeper but I recently switched to PerfectDisk because it is free and lightweight. PerfectDisk allows me to defrag even while I am working on my PC. So far, I had been running this software for weeks and got no problems with it. I don't have to schedule all that defragmenting work because it defragments the hard disk only at times when it is necessary.

I a purchased/free defrager the same or different, better or worse than a defrag that comes with the PC? I have the defrag on my WinXP nad do it regularly, but is it doing anything or is a purchased one better, maybe this one is out of date as the PC is 4 years old... thoughts?

I know a person who does it daily, but I only do it when I feel my computer is running slow and I and trying everything to make it go faster. My friend says I should do it all the time to always have full performance, but I just forget about it because it is running fine. I think it is a good idea to clean up the disc more often though. I will do a disc clean up more often than a defragmentation.

I didn't defrag for like 2 years now. The problem is that I need to have at least 15% free space on disk but I always have just 1-2% :)
But PC is still running pretty good.

I defrag about once a month. I use quite a lot of space-consuming software, and I'm frequently deleting things so it leaves fragments on the computer. I should probably defrag more often, but it takes so long to do on this computer that I have to leave it on overnight.

I use an awesome automatic defragmenter called Diskeeper 2008 professional. It defragments automatically in the background when it is necessary, without interfering with any other application. This means that I don't ever have to worry about defragging:D
The frequency of defrag depends on your usage patterns. The interesting thing is the more regularly you defrag, you notice less of an*improvement* from each defrag. This because with frequent defrag, there is no fragmentation build up, and hence no performance degradation, so the system always runs smoothly.

Hi,
I used to defrag my computer once in 15 days. Because when was going through a computer magazine, i found our computer should be defragged once in 15 days. Before that i was using defrag once in 3 months.. I use a software to defrag the computer.
