Or do you use the battery until its run down and then you recharge.I personally like to keep it plugged in to power supply ,It could be paranoia ,but I feel I get better service when its always plugged in .You see I get my internet via my mobile phone which is always being charged from my laptop and my internet seems faster when plugged in,just my view . Lately I have been wondering though if I may damage my computer by doing this. What do you do when working with your laptop ?

it wont affect your laptop as when the battery is full, the laptop begins to run in A.C power like a Desktop pc. most of the laptops support this feature. so no problem at all. but you told you are using your phone kept charging all the time through your laptop during browsing.the battery of phone is such that it should be dicharged and charged.so the battery when it gets full, remove the charger, that way you can save your phone from getting the battery drained frequently.

I always keep it plugged in because checking my mail takes waaay to long and the battery would drain out if I wouldn't keep it plugged. I don't like to stay under the stress that I might run out of battery :) I don't think it has anything to do with the internet connection speed, but the screen always gets darker if it's not plugged in, even if it's fully charged. So that's another reason, too. I really don't know if it can damage your laptop or not, but I don't think so. The battery is mostly used when you're going out and you can't keep it plugged in, that's it's purpose in my opinion.

I know, so if I want it to last longer I'll have to let the screen be darker... I hate that, even if it might be better for my eyes :) I always let it plugged in because of that too.

Most of the time, I do keep my laptop plugged in. For some reason, my battery doesn't last but an hour or so. I don't know what the typical length of my battery's life is. Besides, when it's not plugged in, the screen darkens a little bit. While I can handle it, most of the time, I like the brightness of the screen when I'm working.

I guess what I've always said about this is true. The day is not a total waste if you learn one new thing a day. I guess that's my new thing for the day. That is such a neat piece of trivia for my computer. I'll have to give it a try when I'm on my laptop next. Although, that probably won't be until sometime tomorrow, maybe.

Mamacathie just gave us a quick fix for that dim screen when you unplug your laptop. Use the FN key and up arrow at the same time and it will brighten your screen, or use the down key which will dim it. I have my laptop unplugged now and I used the keys and it is as bright as when it's plugged to the power.

Having your laptop plugged in most of the time reduces your battery's lifespan. But like you on really tough days I also keep my laptop plugged in as I don't wanna get suddenly interrupted with my work. I have noticed that sometimes my battery indicates a wrong power level. Recharge it and in a few minutes it's full. Sometimes the batteries indication circuit gets disoriented and doesn't read right after some time. To reset that and get an accurate reading you need to fully discharge the battery and force the indicator to empty and get it recharged back in full. A few times of this will get the indicator right and of course you save on your battery's lifespan. cheers!

I use all the battery before charging it. However, working with your laptop pluged in at all times will not do any harm to your laptop but it will affect the battery life. Your laptop's battery is there for a reason, so you might as well use it. If you keep your laptop's battery dormant for more than two or three weeks you will risk decreasing your battery's lifetime.

My laptop is 6 years old and it still has the same battery that was in it when my son bought it. He used it 3 years and I bought it from him. I keep my laptop plugged in most all the time and hardly ever use the battery. But I unplugged it awhile ago just to see what happened. I had full charge and I'm still running on the battery. It looks like there is no problem with my battery. It is only a 2 hr battery so I make sure I have my power cord if I happen to take it to the library or some other place.

Good for you. Since I'm not that technology-friendly I just follow manual's instruction and also my boyfriend's advise who happens to know a thing or two on this stuff.

I usually use a laptop using power supply while working. I only use the laptop on battery when I am outside and I do not have electricity. I don't think that you are damaginng your laptop by usig power supply. (c) ronaldinu 2009 - the more people I meet-the more I love my dog

Although I do know that it's not good to over charge the battery I do leave it on charge as I have it on all of the time. When I am here just messing around or working and wehn I leave my computer it is still on. I might get an IM from my children or a friend and do not want to miss them as everyone is in another state than I am in.

This is my second laptop and I have always worked with them plugged in but I have went through many AC adapters because the cord always breaks just below the plug in place on my computer. I guess it is from twisting it so much, really don't know. I just now broke my first one yesterday on my new laptop and got the black electrical tape around it so maybe it won't go any further for a long time. I never liked working with my laptop before with it unplugged because it was so dim but I finally learned how to brighten the screen up and now it works much better. Just in case someone else is in the same situation I will tell you what to do. You press the Fn key and the up arrow at he same time and the up arrow make it brighter and the down arrow make it dimmer. Maybe all of you already knew this, LOL but I just learned so you can teach an old dog new tricks. God bless you!

mamacathie, thanks for the information. I keep my laptop plugged in all the time, too. But I had wondered why it would dim when I unplugged it and that bothered me. Apparently, it's to save battery. Thanks for telling us how to fix that problem. I just unplugged and tried it and it worked. I hit it two times and it really brightened it up!

Because my main machine is my desktop, I usually have to plug in my laptop when I use it because the battery has run flat. Even when it's charged up, when we are away, I rarely use it on battery only because it doesn't seem to last very long. :-) Derek

Dear friend, I usually use my laptop plugged especially while I am in office and home. Moreover I hope over charging a mobile could create problems to its battery. In the case of laptop it may not matter much.

I keep my laptop plugged in while using it during the day. I some times take the battery out of my computer when it's fully charged because I'm afraid it may start to wear out over time.

I use a desktop, so I don't have a choice in the matter. My wife on the other hand uses her laptop with and without the plug. Majority of the time she is in her office using the laptop plugged in. Othertimes she uses it around the house in different rooms without the plug. Sometimes she even takes it with her out with her and she doesn't take her plug with her. She uses the wifi at restaurants that support it for FREE.

When there is an outlet near my working place, than I use my charging cable. I could not bear to write something, while my notebook is shutting down to standby mode, even if I press CTRL + S everytime. Some notebooks are configured to dim the display while working in battery mode, so that you have a brighter display when you plug in your notebook. When you're watching a film, then the notebook is using more power, and I think it's really annoying when the notebook shuts down while you are watching a film.

I have wondered that myself. My brother has a laptop and he was keeping it plugged in all the time. I figured that it could shorten the life of the battery or damage it and told him to power up but once powered to unplug the power supply. I don't know whether it will truly mess it up but I figure better safe then sorry and buying a new battery because other one burned out.

When I use my laptop I always keep it plugged in. I don't think its going to damage the laptop keeping it plugged in, because they have fixed that problem that used to catch the laptop on fire.Every once in awhile I'll use the battery when I want to use it in the bedroom before bed. But that hasn't been for a long time so its always plugged in.

There's nothing wrong with using the mains for your laptop but if you go for this option make sure that you remove the battery. By doing this you are relying solely on your power supply and you won't wear out the battery. If however you are taking the laptop away with you somewhere and you need to use the battery you can fully charge it by using the mains. The only damage you cause will be to your battery and not your computer itself. Andrew

I Use my laptop untill the battery get drained and recharge it again because i am bit lazy to arrange the charging wire and giving it to the power supply i only feel like recharging only when it is completely drained and it can run no more.
