My poor two legged puppy is sick. Well he is no longer a puppy becuase he is an eight year old boy. Yesterday he woke at 3am complaining that he has a sore throat. We called for the family doctor and he prescribed an antibotic. My son has alos high temperature 38C or above. We are controlling tempearature with giving nurofen syrup every six hours and the temperature goes down for a few hours to spurt up again. We are trying to keep him cool, with a facecloth dipped in water on his forehead. How do you feel when your children are sick?

I always hated it when they were sick, especially when they are too little to give medications to sooth the symptoms. Nowadays they allow less and less due to side-effects that they are more aware of.
Keeping the room moister with a vaporizer or humidifier, stay away from all dairy, sugar and corn products, let him take a bath in lukewarm water, drink a lot of water, let him get some sun, even if just sitting by the window (the vitamin D makes a huge difference) and if you have Zicam over there (an herbal remedy) get it. It speeds up healing.
I hope that he feels better soon.

When my 'puppies' were sick, whether they had four legs or two, it was always a worrying time. Whether they ran a temperature or not I could not sleep and was so intent on watching for any improvement.
Time and a lot of attention took care in all cases of being sick and in less than no time they were back to being the little devils they were before they were sick, whether they had four legs or two
I hope yours pick up again really quickly too!

My children are grown now but I remember how I used to feel when they were younger. My feelings were a mixture of anxiety, empathy and dogged tiredness running around after them. As a mum, I think you also feel their symptoms for them. I hate seeing kids down especially, as they're normally so full of energy and joy. Illness knocks all the stuffing out of them... and us mums!!!
Brightest Blessings in the hope that both your "children" recover very soon.

I feel badly when one of the children are sick. If it is bad then I worry and I am anxious for them to get well. I'm sorry that your son doesn't feel well. I hope he gets well soon.

U treat a real puppy as a woman, and treating your own son as a puppy?? lol =D Jokes aside, hopefully he's feeling better now, since he had seen a doctor and taken his medicine too ^_^
MAybe he has got some viral infection and thus his temperature is going up and down.. It's better to bring him to the hospital if his fever still dun subside by tomorro..

My "two legged puppy" is 29....and I am still a basket case if anything "off course" happens to him!
Did the Dr. tell you why he is presribing antibiotics...a diagnosis...is it "strep throat?" I am asking, as that is a common, but cruelly painful ailment, with high fevers...and to add caution..it is very infectious! Did you ask the Dr. about the "Nurofen" syrup/is it recommended for children under 12? Lately, here in Canada, acetominophen is contraindicated for children!
Do NOT be afraid to bathe his whole body with tepid water, and a gentle fan to blow on him....the evaporation process works as cooling. Do not overcool, by using cold water...tepid water only! Watch for fever spikes...with the antibiotics, you should see some relief within 24 hours! Not to alarm you..but parents should appraise themselves of all the signs & symptoms of "Spinal Menangitis"....as it is re-surfacing in all the regions of the world! When it was/is my son....I would sooner "err on the side of caution."
He was born with a "hole in his heart", resulting in a very suppressed immune system...so that, my friend is the main reason I took my "paramedics" training!
I pray that by the time, you get time to read this...the fever has passed in your little "diamond in the rough" is on his way to complete recovery!
And by the time you read this, my son will have landed in Brazil...and I will not be mentally challenged and sleep derived...he phoned from Toronto last nite at 6:13 and will be arriving in Brazil about 8:30 a.m. PST!

hi pergammano, the antibiotics start with a z something . Dr. said to use nurofen syrup only if temperature is high. Today he was a lot better but temperature went high later on tonigh before he went to sleep so we had to give him a dose of nurofen syrup. The temperature is due to an inflammation of his tonsils. Thanks for your care and advice.

Thank you, so kindly, ronaldinu, for the best response! I have not been on the computer much in the last 2 weeks, so apologize in taking so long to "thank you"!
Just as your life is slowing down (school over soon)...I hope, my life has "revved up" (spring has finally sprung)....so computer time is on the back burner! Have you taken that nice weekend getaway yet? Cheers, my friend!

I would go into Mummy mode, listen to my gut, and follow doctors orders. I'm lucky my kids were seldom ill when they were small and I never panicked until the crisis was over. Of course though, I worried myself sick through the whole thing. But I always seemed to know when I was out of my depth and needed help. Parental instincts are a wonderful thing if we listen. So listen! I really hope your son gets better soon...........let us know eh?

Hi ronaldinu - I've been reading your discussion and I am very happy to hear that your son is doing a lot better now after being so sick. My son is 14 and I still feel horrible when he gets even the slightest sore throat or something, even if it is minor, especially if I have to send him on to school. That is just if it isn't too bad but enough to make him feel under the weather. I feel like I'm punishing him if make him go to school and am being a bad mommy. :( His dad and I are divorced and I hate it even worse if he is with his dad when he gets sick because for some reason I just feel like he needs to be with me so I can take care of him. It is so hard. But, again, I am so glad your son is much better now. Take care.

Hello ronaldinu
When my boys are sick I always wish it was me, not them, and then I would know exactly what is wrong and treat the illness to exactly to what I should. I always feel so sad seeing them feel so ill and not being able to do more than I am already, I just want it to go away and that my kids would feel better and get back to their usual selves!

i thought you were talking about a dog. don't worry too much when a child gets a little sick, like running a little fever, having cold. as far as i know, it is good for children to have a fever once in a while. it helps their bones grow. but i have heard bad things about antibotic and they should be used careful and try not to use it if it isn't necesery. once you use them, keep using it unitl the disease fully gone or it will make the bacteria even stronger.

I don't have any children of my own yet, but when my fosterbrother is sick I feel so sorry for him and I would do anything to make him feel better. Unfortunatly most of the time there is little you can do, other than trying to make them feel as comfortable as possible and being around.

Awwwww...........I really hope your doggie gets better..... Please keep us posted on his condition.
Well, my child is my 5 year old black American shorthair (Mija) and when she gets sick I worry a lot.
Right now she's being treated for crystals in her urine and the vet has her on prescription cat food. She's not vomiting anymore and hasn't since she's been on the food, but, she still will meow when she's going to the bathroom, so, I know she's still in a bit of pain. It just breaks my heart to hear her meowing while going to the bathroom. She doesn't meow all the time, but, enough times to still worry me.
The more people I meet the more I love my cat :)
Purrs,
Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

I think that the only thing you can do when children are sick is be with them if they want you and look after them with what they need.
I would hate to have someone take all my clothes off me and put me in the bath when i am sick, so I dont do that to my children either. I keep them all wrapped up and comfortable.
We use paracetamol in England for children, and buy that in a liquid form. Asprin and Ibuprofen are for adults.
As for antibiotics......unless my children have a life threatening illness, such as meningitis, they do not have antibiotics. The reason being is that they are over prescribed, they damage otherwise healthy immune systems and stop your own body growing stronger.
If you do some research you will see the connection to antibiotics and auto immune diseases such as MS, Lupus, Fibro, RA etc etc when the kids are older.
The facecloth is also a great way to help keep kids cool and to sooth them too.
I hope your Puppy will feel better soon.
