Would you rather go to the movies or rent a movie?

I wanna go to the movies 'cause it's more fun to watch in a big screen, dolby surround, theater environment but of course renting a movie is cheaper. So, me and my friends or family go to the mall for movies just occasionally or at least twice a month and we just usually rent DVD and watch at home. What do you prefer?

Well, nowadays everyone has their own "home theatre" system, so it is much more convenient to watch a movie at home where you can pause it, go to the bathroom, get a snack, whatever. Going to the theatre is an experience that can't be beaten, but with the prices they charge and their uncomfortable seats, I rarely go any more. Also, I find it really gross that the floors feel greasy like they are slathered with butter. (Anyone else notice that?)

So far with my experience going to theaters, I haven't noticed greasy floors. Well, I guess that depends to the management. What I don't like when going to the theater though is when there's a group of people who were like bees and keep buzzing and buzzing and chatting, it's annoying specially when you're really concentrating watching the film.

watching movie is not a good idea for us for we are five members of our family and that would be so expensive for our budget. yes, i can not remember anymore when was the last time i watched movie. but my children together with my sisters they had watched movies and i think the last one was twilight. if i like something i just wait for my other sister to send a dvd copy. its okay i can wait for that. i dont go to rentals for some of the dvd or vcd they have hasa lot of scratches already and it is difficult to watch.

Hey there. You could download movies if you want through some programs but it would take some time though and a fast internet connection. I usually download movies and that saves me some money. Maybe, you could go to the theater with one of your children when you've some opportunity, you should treat yourself from time to time

hmmm thanks but i dont like watching movies on the pc, and about bringing only one child when i wantto watch a movie is not a good idea too. kids are kids i am sure there will be jealousy build up if i only bring one. yes i do treat myself. i go out alone and get a massage that is much better for me than a movie.

going to the theater has always been a preference for me. but now that prioces has gone up, mostly, i wait for my friends' evaluation of the movie. if ever if it's worth watching it or not.
if ever i like the movie, that's the time i buy the dvd (pirated or not - LOL) so that i could watch at the convenience of our home. =)
but then, there's this site in the internet which are free to be viewed so sometimes i go here first than in theaters. =)

It's really more convenient to see movies on the web now, actually I watch movies on the net every weekend but I just hope that the movie industry wouldn't suffer a great loss because of piracy. But, what could we do, it's just not practical now to watch movies in theaters often because of its high prices.

there is no renting business of DVD when the film is running on theatres...
mostly in my country we dont watch films on DVD...we would go to theater to see the film...with surround digital sound, 70mm screen, with lot of people surrounded us , clappong and whistling...this habit is very much in theaters..people found loving it...usually DVD business is strictly prohibited, the producers are taking the movie for a huge amount and the theater owners are getting for a huge amount, so no DVD work...we have to watch only in theater...
happy mylotting...

I always prefer seeing movies in the theater, but I do rent DVDs as well. There is nothing better than seeing the movie on the big screen...there is so much more detail, particularly if it is a movie set in a foreign country. If I have a choice, I will go to the movies instead of renting. And the movie theater I belong to has a discount card, which I put to good use. Also friends know me so well that often I get movie tickets (for use anytime) on my birthday or as Christmas gifts.
Still, I do watch DVDs at home, and I appreciate having that option because a lot of Indies never make it to my town. Now that I don't live in Chicago anymore, I miss a lot of the international and Indie films I used to see in the theater. Seeing them on DVD is my only choice.
I guess you can say, I just love movies in any form!

I like watching Indie movies too, I think they're simply great, the story and everything. You're right, it's so much different when you're in theater watching movies. I wish I also have a discount card like yours. Thanks for responding.

I would prefer renting movies to watch at home since they are cheaper. Otherwise I'd participate in lucky draws that give out free movie preview vouchers by sending an sms. So far I've successfully won twice in the draw. I guess in this bleak economic downturn, it is ok to forgo the bigger screen, aircon and captivating surround sound. There's a good side of watching movies at home is that I can fully enjoy my privacy.

Wow, you're a lucky fella, winning free vouchers and all that. I have never won like that before, I would love to but I guess it's not just the thing for me. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Oh yeah the lucky draw is a collaboration between the cinemas and the newspaper, and is a win-win for both parties, ie. attract more customers to cinemas and more readers for the papers. I'm actually quite enticed to participate in more promotions. When you participate as fast as the latest promotion is released on the papers, the chance of getting the vouchers is quite good. And the sponsor is quite generous, as they give away accessories like movie poster, notepads, stickers etc. I must agree it's quite a successful marketing strategy, and is one way to ensure the survival of the newspapers.

I prefer going to the movies but I don't get to do it that often, mainly because it can be expensive and I don't have anyone to go with me, my husband won't go, he'd rather stay home and watch movies. The only time I go is if one of our nephews is visiting and as a treat I'll take him to the movies, most of the time we just rent them. I have a big screen at home and surround sound too, but theres nothing like that movie popcorn...haha.

We don't go to the movies very often too because it's not that practical nowadays. We just go if there's really a good film that's worth it. Thanks for responding.

I love going to the movies as it always feels like a bit of a treat. And I do prefer to watch a movie in the cinema for certain genres i.e thrillers and horrors, or movies that are forecast to be big hits.
However, going to the cinema can prove to be an expensive hobby if its something which is done on a regular basis, so I usually do rent a movie and watch it at home, or try and catch it on TV.
Watching films at home is also nice in it's own way though as it is cosy, and you can take take breaks, grab food etc at your own convenience

I used to love going to the movies. I like deciding what to see, getting together with friends, buying some popcorn, watching the movie and then discussing with others who had seen it.
Nowadays, though, it's just so expensive. the tickets are high, the concessions are high...and it's really bad if you are paying for another person or poeple. So I usually just stay at home and atch movies on pay-per-view.

Well Dutchess, I do love going to the movies, but I don't do it much anymore because of the cost! I also think its a little silly to see a movie that is going to be on DVD in a few weeks. Things just come out so quickly these days.
I do go to the movies for certain things, thoug. I like to go every few months with my young daughter to see a Disney Pixar film. They are really entertaining on the big screen. I also can only see the Harry Potter movies big screen.

I can't wait to see Harry Potter this year! I'm such fan. I was so sad when it got canceled last year so I was really hoping that I could get to see it and I would definitely be watching on the big screen! Just hope that it's worth the wait.

Honestly to say, i just rent movies and watch them at home more often, renting movie seems cheaper. but some movies seems more enjoyable when they are watched in the theater, so sometimes i would go the theater with my friends when we feel watching this type movie in the theater would give us more fun.By the way, the black cat icon behind your name seems so lovely.

Of course I like to go to halls. But nowadays in India, it is costly and full of danger. Any moment there may be a terrorist attack. So, I like to bring DVDs athome and enjoy in homely environment.

I'll be watching the latest Harry Potter in big screen with my friends this year. You should watch it, too. I should be real good. 'Can't wait actually. It's been postponed from the original release which is November last year and I hope it's just worth the wait. Thanks for responding!

I do like to go to the movies as often as I can, because it seems like I'm so impatient waiting for the movie (that I liked) to come out on dvd. There are some movie theaters prices dropping around where I live (such as $6.50). I just can't get comfortable in a theater seat. On the other hand, I love to watch dvd's at home, that way I can get my own drinks, snacks, and paused the movie while I use the restroom.

I occasionally like going to the theater, but being that they are so expensive, I tend to prefer hitting the matinée when I do go, otherwise I prefer sitting at home on my comfy couch, curled up with a blanket and a hot cup of coffee. Plus at home there are no sticky floors, no screaming kids, talking teenagers, or the guy with the big head sitting in front of me. LOL!
