This is a “what if” discussion just to have some fun. WHAT IF you woke up tomorrow morning not in your home but 100 years in the past…1909 to be exact. To give you a little insight into what you’d be facing here are a few highlights from 100 years ago…
http://superpupsays.typepad.com/superpup_says/2009/01/centennial-life-in-1909.html
(Scroll down some and you will see prices for that time and below that you’ll find some great pictures of that time)
I’d probably try to look up family I had at that time though how I’d explain who I am is beyond me. If I couldn’t get back to my own time then I’d have to learn some kind of skill, probably typing, that I could work to earn money to live on. Thankfully things were cheaper back then but then again you made a lot less money LOL I don’t know, I might even want to stay back then…things were a lot simpler.
What would you do in 1909? What kind of skill would you want to learn to earn a living? Would you want to find a way back or would you prefer to stay there? What did you think of the prices of back then?

though morals were more consistent in the society then, some of the things in the good old days were not so good! Leave me here, please.

I would probably do sewing for a living. Yes, things would be cheaper but the cost of living was lower also. It would be interesting to go back and see how our ancestors/relatives lived. I don't know that I would want to get stuck in that time.

I think I would love it if I was transported back there--until I had to do the laundry by hand or go to the market every day, not to mention having no vacuum cleaner or other wonderful conveniences!
It had its charm, though, I've often wanted to visit that time. I would just like to be wealthy enough to have a nice house and a maid!

I am an old fashioned person..I really love old things and I think I would have loved to live even farther back than 1909..True things did not cost as much and there was not many people who had a lot of money,,but I like the simple things in life..I don't know what kind of living I would want to do..I think I would like to have a little book store,,or work in one..I might like to be a secretary or a store keeper. It would be awesome to meet some of my ancestors. I have always thought that I should have been born back then or maybe the 1800's. There was as there is now people who were rich and people who did not have very much.back in those days.

Hmmm that is one of the most interesting topic todate in my opinion. Simply because, if you know what you're supposed to do. It is actually to your advantage. If it were to happen to me... I would use everything that I know about history to my advantage. Like what were the turning points during that period. I would watch out for those and if ever I know that history pretty well it is to my advantage. I don't really know much about that era you know. But what if I did huh? Like I knew the exact date when things would happen. I can use that to my advantage. Like the break of a war or something. Then I would use what future technology and knowledge I have to my advantage in that era. It should be difficult adjusting at first but if you do get the hang of it, it could just be your ticket to a better life. Starting from way over back in time. The advantage of knowing history as we know could come in handy and could save lives in that era. But I'm not quite sure if what I do in the past might change in the future. As most intellects think, if you tamper with the past the ripple effect in the future is huge. That's something else to think about then. But that should be another topic open for discussion later on. I can write a book about this but I won't for now. hehehe. Cheers!

this is an interesting discussion... i think i had gotten so used and spoilt by the modern lifestyle and i don't think i can survive if i have to go back to the past... but i don't mind to give it a try as well... it might be interesting and good for a change as i think life 100 years ago must be much simpler than today... take care and have a nice day...

I have always thought I would like to live in the past but not any more. Women were not allowed to vote. The factories were not safe to work in. Women had no rights. There no labor laws protecting children from working in factories. it was a hard life with few luxuries such as vacuum cleaners and laundry was done by hand in most cases.
When you changed the bed you put the top sheet on the bottom and washed the bottom one. You were lucky to have a Sunday best dress. Most people only had one.
When you took a bath you had to carry the water in from the well and if you were lucky you had one with a hand pump, the water was then heated on a wood or coal stove put into to a tub. Then after everyone had their bath the tub was carried out into the yard to be dumped. Mom and Dad had their bath first so when it was the kids turn that water was pretty dirty. You only took a tub bath one a week and between you took what my grandmother call a PTA bath.(washing privates and under the arms and face).
I really don't think living back then was as simple as it sounds. I have lived some of the way they lived back then carrying water and the Saturday night bath thing. cutting wood carrying out the ashes and farm chores.
There really weren't many jobs for women. Teachers, washer women, and maids.
Movies and books romantize those days but they make the hard ships seem like fun. Most women spent all day cooking and caring for the house. It was hard work. Most men let alone women wold cave under the hardships. Just think no pizza huts or fast food place let alone the convince foods from the grocery store. Mostly what you bought from the grocery store was coffee, sugar and flour. No like living today even with the way things are getting tough

Well, if I woke up 100 years in the past and I assume that I have all the information from our time, then I would definitely build my own empire. I'd be a tycoon.. with all the knowledge I have I will work my way from rags to riches by investing in the right businesses and maybe betting on the right teams. I would also try to innovate some stuff way before they were invented.. hehehe.

Egads, the early 1900's would hate me...I have no tolerance for womens' fashions or attitudes at the time and I'd probable have become something of a wild hermit or some sort of outlaw, xD

In 1909 I would probably want to be a writer or a school teacher. I recall Laura Ingalls and her adventure in the Appalachians. I read all the books she wrote. Yes, I think I would like that. I love the clothing and since that was during the victorian age I think I would be quite happy. Nothing wrong with a simpler life and with the way this country is going I am relatively sure I would be happier than I will be in afew more months anyway.

Personally I wouldn't mind living back then. All the stress was on the men not the woman.
All the fighting and all the wars were going on then or soon to be going on so all that seems the same. Woman were known to stay at home and take care of the kids. It wasn't you were lazy back then it was you were being a good housewife. Mens jobs actually covered the bills and we didn't have to worry about where the next mortgage payment was going to come from.

I think it would be very interesting to go back then...or to wake up then and see what life was all about and what they did for day to day activites and see the inventions as they came out..considering that by time I was born in the 70s that most of the inventions are the same they were then --they are just better now...LOL
it would be difficult for us to survive back then, but it would be interesting to be able to experience it in a way that would be an eye opening for us to appreciate what we have...
great discussion and that was fun to read about the past... happy mylotting.

I think I will go mad. The first thing that comes to mind is the toilet condition. I can't imagine not living in an apartment or a house with good washroom facilities. So used to clean toilet now, and so used to having hot water shower early in the morning.
I believe people living then walk more than we do, simply because the public transportation not as good as present time. So please God, dont send me to the past, I dont mind waking up in the future, hopefully the time when household tasks are eliminated for good. Hopefully all houseworks are done by robots and we can just sit and relax

Nice one! The question is, if I will be transported back in time, will I keep the memory that I have in the present time? Well, if yes, I would like to be a historian, I want to deal with ancient places which I can use to help the present generation for their discovery. If not, I'd probably do what I can do for that time. But I wish I could speak other languages if I will go back in time without remembering anything from the present.

If I went back to that time with the money we get a month that would be great. We would be rich in that time. I could buy what I wanted and not have to worry. In those days the salaries were really cheap, and buying something "extra" was hard to do. Even needed things was hard to get. That's why they traded and bartered.
I'd also try to look up family.

Hi twoey68! I found it so interesting while I was looking all those pictures and piece of information about that era. It is nice to live in a very simple life back then. But if I have to find myself in that time one morning, I don't think I will be happy since all of my friends and loved ones are not there with me. Oh my, it will be a scary adjustment since people back then will find me very odd! LOL! It would be nice to live a simple life but I hope to share my simple existence with all the people I grew up with and those that are close to my heart. And if by chance, I can never go back in my own time and I am stuck with that era..well, I have to just to do what I can and live as best and as happy as I could. Hopefully, I won't be tempted to wear pants or jeans and sleeveless shirts/blouses, they may get shocked since women back then wear those long dresses and corsets. haha..
Take care and have a great day!

I would be absolutely horrified. I don't adapt to new situations well and I have often said to my grandma that I would die if I had to live back then. I respect all of the values adn responsibility they had back then but I highly value the commodities we have today. I can't say that I would want to learn anything from then or meet anyone. I would just want to get back to now as quickly as humanly possible. If I had to live back then, I would choose to be a physician.

That would be interesting. I would wonder where I'd be since my grandparents were from another country than where I was born and raised. If I were in my country, my race would be rare. If I were in my grand parent's country I'd have to learn a new language. Maybe I can invent some of the things that exist now while I'm over there and make billions off of it!

Very interesting question. In that time, I would of liked to see how my relatives lived and work. For employment, I would either do general housework or be a clothes pressing (ironer). I would also plant fruits and veggies, that way when the winter came, I wouldn't have to worry about buying that stuff. However, though; I would love to live back in 1909, because of the prices and see the way that America would come to. I would also love to live in this century, because of the technology, lifestyle...etc. I don't think I can live without the internet or my cellphone at all. If I had to pick, I would choose this century.
