I really don't know why people would rate you negative...

...only for stating your opinion. I've been active in topics like religion and politics and I don't know what's wrong with some people here giving you negatives only for voicing out your opinion. Don't get me wrong I'm not really into my rating I just find it unfair.

Hi Dear, there can be only two reasons for negative ranking, first they are working here genuinely and expressing their feeling by rating negative, and second they are doing it purposly may be because of jealousy because your thoughts are not matching with theirs. But don't worry on that part, even if they are rating you negatively, the ratio will be always less because here are other myloters who will rate you positively. Don't give importance to such people. If they are genuine and giving you negative rating, I feel they should also give the explanation for the same, so that the person who is rated negatively by them should be aware of it.

I'm not a huge fan of the rating system either. I just don't think it ends up being very fair. People can rate you whatever they want, and I have a feeling it usually isn't really based on what you wrote. Plus, you're right - we all have different opinions. Just because our opinions are different, shouldn't mean a negative rating. I wish there were a different system for ratings. Or maybe no ratings at all?

I know where you are coming from Cecille. This is absolutely gross. When we are not tolerant enough to listen to each others view points, why are we here in the first place? I think we must appreciate all view points if stated decently (I am not talking about hate speeches here).
I rate each one who have responded to my discussion positive, I rate the discussion I reply to positive and whenever I come across a worthy response. It helps me in being myself.

Hi there mimpi! I just checked your profile and I must say I love it especially the picture ;) The color green is really pleasing to the eyes ;)
What do you mean I know where you are coming from?. Yeah I definitely agree with you this is absolutely gross. It's like getting personal when things should just be professional. I really don't like this, I hope it should be changed.

The negative sign mostly comes up when the discussion goes on about the god and religion. There are even some people here who keeps on rating the discussion of a particular person and fall down his/her rating when their opinions don't match in a single thread. And again, it comes mostly when the discussion is about religion.
Personally, I don't rate negative to anyone, until the response is really offensive and illogical.
Happy mylotting...

I am not stunned to read this because I believe everyone has a point of view to express freely, however I am sorry to read that you have been a victim to this several times.
If they have done this just to express their point of view then they are free to do so. But if they have done this just to prove you wrong on a wrong basis then they are not right to adopt this way of acting.
Maybe you should just be very careful when you respond to a discussion. To voice the truth is very good and one should also know that the truth are sometimes wrongly admitted to some people.

I really think it's unfair because we all know earning here in mylot is very hard. And despite your courtesy and your effort to make the discussion lively, it's really unfair to have a negative rating in return. But anyway, thanks for your concern I'll try to be as careful as possible next time ;) thanks for the response take care :)

Me, I don't rate negative to anyone who respond on my discussion, maybe that will depend on the person who started the discussion. Maybe he or she thinks it is the respond deserve to have it. Maybe that person is against on what he or she believe in or maybe he or she don't like the answer of the responder.

Maybe youre giving negative opinions on others topics. Negative things gets negative things. Dont do unto others what you dont like do unto you. If you feel they are so negative dont mind them. Dont mind them.

I just observed my star went down gradually.. from 9 last week I now have 6 only by being active in controversial issues, politics and religion. So I guess it's on the star.

You can see the rating by pointing the cursor on the star. Mylot reputation of x/100 will appear. That was the rating of the user. Users rate the posts using the positive(+), negative(-), and report(!) buttons.

it is unfair especially when it is a "hot" topic like religion or politics. personally i wouldn't ask a question without expecting controversy and honesty.how can you fault someone for being honest just because they don't happen to agree with you?

I must be one of the oddballs, or perhaps I always was. I respond to and start controversial subjects, like politics and religion, and if I care enough to respond to a discussion, I rate it positive. Not because I agree with the person's point of view, but because they wrote a discussion that is interesting enough to get my attention.
If someone who hates my political views comes along and writes a scathing, long comment, excoriating me for my narrow point of view, etc., I still rate it positive.
Why? Because they took the time to participate in the discussion. There's no debate without sides, so why start one if you don't want people from the other side making comments?
I don't think negative ratings are due to any discussion where someone has written a valid point of view, even if you don't agree with it. I might say that I wish I could negatively rate people for poorly written ones, but then I realize that some people have developing English skills, so I don't rate them negatively either.
People will be childish, nothing you can do about that. I won't be one of them.

Well I think it does not necessarily depend on the length of one's post. Personally though I try to keep something short but as accurate and well-said as possible. There are also lengthy posts out there but they merely talk about their selves without necessarily answering the question correctly or appropriately. Maybe what matters is the quality of one's post and not necessarily the length although it may look impressive :)
thanks for your responses :)

That's fair, I think. I have noticed people responding to discussions only to state that they have no experience of the topic at hand. If the discussion is fairly general, sure, why not? But often, the discussion topic is very specific with a specific question aimed at people who have experience or an opinion. To respond to it just to say you aren't one of the people they wanted a response from is pretty pathetic.
I haven't run into that very much on my discussions, but I don't start very many either. I would also negatively rate people who are using mylot just to self-promote without any relevance to the topic. Luckily, I don't have to do this very often.
No one is making a lot of money by answering discussions, so it seems fair that everyone should attempt to post something relevant. As you say, it's not fair for them to get paid the same as those who take time to post real responses.

I can give you several reasons why I would rate someone on here a negative. One would be if it was offensive. Another if it was unappropriate and just stupid. I have had to do just that a couple of times. It may be unfair but I think this reaches the other side of the 'just your own opinion'. I think that the negative is used very seldom and is misused alot I am sure. And I am still not sure what the ! is for. Any ideas?

Sadly far too many people post a topic expecting their opinion is the only one, so if you have the audacity to have another one, they hit you with a negative. They really are not worth the time you are spending worrying about them, since their minds are too small to even consider the possibility of another point of view. Do not give up speaking your side of a question; it's a very important freedom that should never be taken lightly.

I don't rate someone negative if they have a different opinion than mine. I rate them negatively if they don't answer my question, or if they give a one word answer, if if I can't understand what they have written. I don't mean to be rude, but if I can't understand you, you shouldn't get paid as much as the rest of us!

i will try my best not to go on those kind of discussions... its hard to "discuss" with those kind of people who dont want to hear disagreeing opinions.

Others consider those kind of discussions as a debate so they just give negative rating when they do not agree with the post.
