Well, there are lots of ways you can help yourself in this situation. You can choose to go for a part-time English course after work to learn English. There will be professional teachers to teach you English. Start from the basics first, before going into the more advanced course. I will say this may be the best way to learn proper English, and there are teachers to guide you if you make mistakes.
However, if you work irregular hours and do not have the time to go for these course, you can also buy those self-taught English lessons CDs/DVDs. You should be able to find some of them in bookshops etc, and you can learn English by listening to the discs and learning from them. The disadvantage is that there is no one to guide you along if you make mistakes.
Other ways to help in improving English include reading more English books and watching English movies. These could also help in improving your English slowly... Well, take it slowly, and do not force yourself to remember the vocabulary and grammar. Just take note of them and apply them when using English...

The best way to learn is to see and by see I mean see English movies and concentrate on the dialogues. You will notice that there are so many words that you will learn during that process. Remember the word and look through the dictionary for it's meaning and you will have a sufficient lot of words in your vocabulary. Read a lot of things and try to interact with people in your office in English. This will help a lot because the more practice you put yourself to, the more you will learn.

Hi I'm not good in English also but I can talk and express my self when I talk to foreign friends. There are many things to learn how to speak try to read a dictionary or read a English news paper or books and if you don't understand the word try to look up the meaning. Also try to talk to someone who is good or rather can talk also in English don't be shy if your English is not good because I know he will understand you. Only practice makes you perfect my dear.

I am a postgraduate student. I think the most important method to improve English is to speak more, listen more, read more.If we speak and listen english every day, just like we speak Chinese, the level of our English will get higher day after day.The documents in our laborary are almost English. At the begining,I have much difficult to read the documents, not let to understand them. But after a long time,I got used to it.I think u can do the best!!Good luck!

Your English is exceedingly good and 100% better than my Chinese!
I would suggest reading some children's book or junior novels which will be easy to read and understand then gradually work up to books with a little more command of the language. As others have mentioned watch movies as well. Good luck...you are doing very well.

Hmmmm, if your more into grammar, I guess books can really do well with you. Then again, if your aim to improve your pronunciation, I guess you really have to practice a lot. I do that too since its also part of my work as I help our students to practice their english.
From normal conversations to practice English or with books.
My advice would be to be friends with someone who can speak english to help you practice. That way, you can always use it and retain them even without memorizing.
I could help you with that if you want. It would be nice to get to know someone from another country. (^_^ )

Hello Ruby722,
I am not a good adviser on this. I am still learning and one of the reasons I joined myLot is to learn English from the native speakers. I learned English since I was 7 and when I was in school, I never talked in the language as I felt worried to make stupid mistakes. When I started working, I had no choice but to speak in English most of the time. I love to read English books and the more I speak in English, the more confidence I have. Now, I don't care if I make mistakes and if friends tend to correct me, I won't get angry at them.

You are lucky to have the opportunity of working in an bilingual environment. That means you can not only continue learning the language through textbooks, grammerbooks, examination papers, but also from business documents and daily conversation with the native speakers. That part is much more important. Try to set a plan, imitate the vocabulary and expressions they use, translate the documents into chinese and back to english, so that you turn the passive vocabulary into active vocabulary, that you can use by yourself. No sooner than six months, you will make a different yourself.
Being in the community with foreigners does not mean your english will get better naturally. Overseas living for decades in San Francisco are still speaking poor english. Good memory and diligence will bless you for a rosy future.

Hi Ruby722, it takes practise, and you have to get someone who could speak English to practise with. Practising alone by using listening CDs that you buy at the bookstore is not good enough. Yeah I understand your problem because I taught students from China... those from Beijing or Shanghai are quite alright, but those from other provinces like Shandong are not. Allow me to tell you a short story about one of my students from Beijing.
When Michelle first came to our college (I'm not teaching there anymore), she could only answer one question: "What's your name?" - she could speak no English. Other questions that I asked were greeted with a smile without answers. She worked hard, went to the library, talked to English teachers including me, asked questions, and within one year, she could ask me questions and speak quite well!!
How did she do it? Students from China are known to be good in Grammar, so all you need to do is to apply those grammar rules when you speak and write. And that takes practise :)
Good luck and let me know how you're getting on, yeah? :)

Ruy722,
I have a numer of suggestions to help you improve your English. First, work on pronunciation by finding ways to speak the language.
Do you have skype? If so, try to speak and write to native English speakers.
PM me if you wish to practice ENglish. REading newspapers and books also can help. Read articles in the newspaper that relate to usiness. Keep up with the stock market.
I hope this helps,
Elizabeth

Try to engage in chat. Since what you need is conversational english. I think you should often engage in chat. But make sure that you talk to foreigner so that you can polish your english grammar and spelling as well.
Let me correct your spelling now:
relguar should be regular
emmbrassed should be embarassed
appericate should be appreciate
Hope this helps. If just in case you need a help. You can leave a message on my profile. I can help in a way. I am from the Philippines and I have learn English way back in grade school.

I teach esol and english is tricky. you've obviously got an ok vocabulary already so don't get too worried about that (it's also easier to remember new words if you're relaxed about it...). The main thing probably is to improve your fluency and really all you can do is practice - with friends or native speakers or through a conversation class. and don't worry about making mistakes - it's not embarrassing.
and finally i know i sounded like a (possibly annoying) teacher there but i hope that is what you wanted.

I find English as a complicated language, the way a word is spelled is not always how it is pronounced; one word has different meanings depending on the pronunciation...You can improve your English by constantly reading, it can be articles on the net, books, magazines, newspaper, etc. You should also try to listen to get the proper pronunciation. My son in grade school is required to speak English inside the classroom and in the school premises. Although he is good at writing English articles, he's not as confident when speaking. I encouraged him to watch the Cartoon Network, all shows there are in English. Over a period of 2 months, he was speaking the language like it's his native tongue.
Don't lose heart, with hard work and perseverance, you will eventually be good at it.
