I cannot sleep. I want to but I just can't. Its a curse I've had for a long time. Problem is I know that I will be up by 7:30 tomorrow morning and I will be tired all day. It is hard for me to take a nap during the day. I try to nap when my toddler naps but its hard to. I've tried the sipping calming hot tea and warm milk tricks, but they don't seem to work. Hot baths don't really do it for me either.
So what do you do when you can't get to sleep? Any tricks that may not be popular or are not often heard of? For those who have trouble sleeping what do you do while you are stuck being awake?

If you're suffering from insomnia, then you might want to seek medical assistance. Occasionally, I'm unable to sleep too. I hop on to bed at 10PM, then I'd roll on the bed till 3:00AM before I finally sleep, and I wake up at 8:30AM or earlier. Sometimes, it has something to do with what's going on in your mind. It is believed that if a person is more relaxed, he'd be able to sleep better; when you're tired, you might be able to sleep too. Well, I'm not asking you to work till you're tired LOL. Drinking caffeinated beverages doesn't work for everyone (not for me, at least), neither does counting sheep. Try reading something till you doze off. I'd just watch TV till my eyes feel like closing.
By the way, it's not good to take afternoon naps. It disrupts your sleep pattern. Try doing something to make your mind relax a bit, have more fun etc. This could be the cause - I don't know, but it's worth a try. Or else get some professional help.
Take care, and hope you'll be able to sleep better soon.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I have thought about seeing a doctor but just never went. I find when I turn on the tv it takes me even longer to fall asleep. I know that sometimes it is caused by things I have on my mind but others it just seems that I cannot sleep.

it's really a torture to suffer from insomnia. first of all try to find the cause. can your toddler be the cause? when my son was very young, i couldn't have a good sleep either. is there anything worrying you a lot? that may also cause insomnia. if it isn't the causes mentioned above, go to your doctor for help.

Well my toddler actually sleeps very well with little wake ups in the night. I do have worries sometimes but it isn't always the reason for not being able to sleep. I've had this problem ever since I was just a teenager with sleep. It just doesn't seem to agree with me. I might see a doctor if other suggestions don't work. Thank you for responding.

hello kcoregon,
What I'm always doing and so effective to me is to read anything like books, pocketbooks, magazines, newspapers and even bible. This way I can sleep easily. You can try this, it might help you. Besides, don't think too much. Just relax.

I try to read or try to be busy in the morning to tire myself and get a goodnight sleep. I also heard that drinking hot milk will help. Though i'm not usually doing it cause i'm lactose intolerant.Ü You can also try to have a nice warm bath before sleeping. I hope these things will help you.Ü

Thank you for your response. I am not big on the hot bath thing for sleep. It can be comfortable but it never has helped me sleep though I hear it works for many others. I do have a lot of busy days though some days I admit that I get plain lazy. I never kept track if those lazy days were followed by sleepless nights. Its an interesting thought to consider though. :)

I find that a hot shower in the night before I go to bed, as well as some music which I find entertaining to put me to sleep quite easily. Also it helps if I reflect on the days happenings or any problems or issues I have in my life. Sometimes I try to plan ahead from the next day, but this is quite a pointless practice for when Man plans, God laughs :P . You can also try reading since whenever I read lying down, it somehow sends an automatic signal to my body to go into sleep-mode or something lol
Thanks for sharing and happy myLotting!

Thank you for the suggestions. I have thought about listening to soothing music mixed with nature sounds. I might give that a try. For me reading doesn't help me sleep. I get so into a book when I start reading that I don't want to stop. It's as if reading the book has a power over me, like an addiction. A book that normally takes others time to read will take me a matter of days because I have to find out how it ends. I once finished a book in a single day because I was so addicted to the story, lol. But thank you for your response and suggestions!

The first thing you need to do is get some exercise during the day. Nothing like a load on the system to make it want to rest. Next, go to bed at the same time everyday. After a while your body will know it's rest time at that time. NO CAFFEINE. That includes chocolates, coffee, tea, and lots of soft drinks. Watch your salt intake. Too much salt can wire you up. If after all that you still can't sleep, try a white or pink noise generator. Pink does best for me. You can download one for your computer or you can buy cds. In fact they have all kinds of sounds from low hums to rain. I'm sure you can find something. Good luck!!

I don't drink caffeinated drinks. I eat chocolate but not every day only on occassion as I try to limit my sugar intake. I didn't know about the salt though. I must admit that I do like my salt a bit much and should cut back anyhow. I'll have to look into the music, thanks for the suggestions.

Take a hot bath, drink hot chocolate or drink some milk
If you feel sleepy, just sleep.
Ask someone to take care of your responsibilities, you must sleep at all times or you will not be able to keep going. Try to eat healthy food and avoid any beverage contain caffeine.
