What do you do with the loose change (coins)?

I normally keep the coins from the loose change (the coins that I get from the balance after payment) in my handbag. It do come in handy especially paying for certain carparks with coin machine on hourly basis charge! But as sometimes it been accumulating and my handbag become heavy. Once a week I will clear my handbag and put the loose coins in my son piggy bank (it is not a pig but a aluminium postbox can, lol) Therefore sometimes I preferred to use credit cards for payment, no loose coins :) So what do you do with your coins!

I keep my coins in jars. One jar is just for pennies, and one jar is for silver change - mostly nickels and dimes because I use quarters for laundry. When the jars get full, I take them to the coin counting machine at my bank (which does it for free) and then treat myself to something nice.

I do collect them in a bag in my house, and weekly once or twice when i go to wet market(fresh vegetable shopping), for shopping i take only those coins for it, as there only they do not take any cards, and take cash only. My kids are still small for piggy bank i believe, but its a good idea ,i must say for me in future...

Dear nehaagra, It is good that you use it to spend during marketing! They actually love to accept coins, coz they always run out of coins in their daily business transactions. My local noodle stall preferred me to pay him in coins, according to him every morning he has to go to the bank to exchange for coins. He needs the coins to pay for the balance change to customers with big notes. Tks for sharing and happy myLotting!

Hi there! I keep my loose change on a plate together with my keys. Every time I get home I check my wallet and pocket and put my loose change on the plate. I don't like my wallet having all the coins or a separate coin purse inside my bag cause it gets heavy sometimes. The plate is placed near the door and when I need to buy something from the convenient store, I use the coins. I also get some coins for my fare whenever I need to go out. That's a very good idea to save coins for your son. I think not all parents do that. My sister has a son but she don't save coins for her kid. I'm not a mother yet but am a pet owner and maybe I could use my coins in saving for my pet's needs. Ciao!

Dogs - Meet Carey and Gello!
Hi Irene! Yeah, I like to be organized with my coins. I don't like seeing my coins on every corner of the house and inside pockets of my pants and shorts. I don't like them too messing my bag. I don't like to be searching for coins whenever I need them and forget where they are. I have uploaded a picture of my pets. They're my children, my babies and best friends all rolled into one hehe! The name is Carey and Gello. I really do care about them and always try to give them what they need to stay healthy.

I carry some loose change with me, but as you correctly pointed out the handbag can get really heavy coz of the coins. So I normally just have some loose change and the remaining goes into a transparent jar. Everyone at home does the same and if we ever need coins, that is where we pick it up from.

I think it is in Tamil, not sure are you speaking in this language/dialects). You too have a transparent jar, great! It is nice to see the coins accumulating there! Perhaps you can have some big plans on your 'loose coins in the jar'! Some of the myLotters keep it and spend on some nice treats, summer vacation, retirement fund, plans on buying something bigger! Or perhaps just transfer it into your bank account and see the coins grow with interest...lol Tks and all the best, happy myLotting!

I got time to wait at the counter! muahaha.. Happy MyLotting :)

I keep all my spare coins in a jar/vase and once it is full I empty it and bank it buy putting $100 worth of gold coins into each bag and depositing it into my account. A few dollars here and there might not seem like much but it does add up as another poster noted. At the moment im planning on putting it towards an overseas holiday. I also like to keep $10 worth of coins or so in my handbag to pay for small things like bus fare, train fare or an occasional snack or bottle of water. It is also handy for carparks too as you suggested.

I take my coins to the bank every month or every other month. Before i started taking them to the bank i was putting them ina huge tin. It became so heavy that i couldnt even lift it. I had to pull it around. I didnt take all that change to the bank at one time. I actually hade to take it in parts till i had it all over there. It was crazy. Thats why i take it often now. Its alot easier to carry.

Dear jdyrj777, Wow, that's heavy... do take care, do not carry too heavy thing, it will puts burden on our back bones.. must extra careful! So, you have done the right thing, carry them in parts! Perhaps you should bank it in every 2 weeks, instead of once every month! So, the rate you are going, I believe you will definitely have a BIG SMILE by the time of your retirement with the extra gratuities, employees contribution / provident funds... Do not forget about me...let me know the good news..lol Btw, you can join me for another interesting topic that I had started yesterday, just check on my profile : "Are you an Impulsive buyer influence by SALE & Offers?" Dear jdyrj777, It is a wonderful idea, it definitely can add up quite alot by then. Why don't you open a saving account that have a good interest rate. Accumulate the loose coins and bank-in once a year. When it reach a substantial amount, transferred it into Fixed Deposit. Higher interest, just record it in a diary /note book. Just do the same every year.... I believe by the time you retire... your jokes will make you proud & happy! Actually there is one myLotter in this discussion have a plan to save the loose coins, he had save quite an substantial amount already...you know what he plans to buy....????? A Truck !! I like his idea too! Take the first small step, then the leap! SO..let's start the ball rolling & the Coins will Roll-IN.

Dear yugasini, Many of us here will keep our coins in a jar, a jug, a box, a piggy bank, etc. The wonderful things is that without we realising, the coins that we put in day-by-day has accumulated to an amount that's substantial enough when we run out of cash...it is sort of 911 (Emergency rescue). Therefore, yugasini...do not give up on myLot, see it like the coins you've been putting in the box without realising in no time it has been accumulating and are ready for cash-out! Btw, could u advise me on the payout, does it means that we need to reach the minimum of USD10 by end of month if Not, the amount earned will be fofeited??? Tks

my coins go in a little purse with red circles (for luck) as i always put a coin in two of my son's wallet and current piggy bank. i always had preferred using coins since they prevent me from spending the paper money which means i'm limited in my spending. before i know it i could buy a shirt at the end of the week .

i just saw that purse at the mall. i love reading feng shui and even without interest in this red had always been associated with luck. circles is for luck also which is more of the money sign in feng shui than a rectangle for paper money since the coins produce noise which they say wards off bad luck. i actually have 3 purses before where i tend to put equal coins: the red for anything clothing or accessory i want to buy, the green purse (which is lucky also when it comes to money) is for any treat (food) i want to splurge on and the brown one is for family budget filling in since brown had been associated to family.

Hello Iriene. Every bit of loose change I get goes into three jars...one for pennies, one for quarters, and one for nickels and dimes. I use the quarters for laundry, and take the money to the bank when the other jars are full. Half goes into savings, and the other half is to do or buy something special that I wouldn't otherwise. This way, I know I am never totally broke! LOL The last time there were $9 worth of pennies and $99 dollars worth of nickels and dimes. The most I ever accumulated before turning it in was $300. Not bad for loose change :D Karen

Hi Iriene, My son has a habit of checking my coin purse when I get home from work, our deal is whatever coin he can find there is his. He then puts all the money in his coin bank. Normally everytime he starts on a new coin bank he already has a plan on what to do with it when it gets full, usually it's to buy a toy. He's actually bought some toys out of the coins he got from my bag.

Hi Iriene, You're right, that's my son's face on my avatar... No worries, he is guided by some rules at home and that includes our deal on the loose coins. He knows that he is only allowed to check a certain coin purse in my bag, he can't touch my wallet and other things found there, and he doesn't do it to this dad and others in the house too. He knows his limits and I deliberately put the coins in that particular coin purse so he will find something for his coin bank. And he always tells me how much he got each time he peeks at the purse. When he grows older I'll give him an allowance when he's able to handle money by himself, right now he's only 6 yrs old and he is happy with the loose coins for his coinbank. Nice post, thanks.

I put all of my loose change in a coin bank. My bank is a glass box type thing, not a pig so I'm calling it a coin bank. I don't like carrying change in my wallet because it makes it heavier. I find it more convenient to pay with cash when I have it and when I don't, I use my debit card or my credit card. When my coin bank gets full, I'm planning on rolling the change and taking it to the bank and putting it towards my bills. I enjoy counting my change myself because I can see exactly how much I have.

I have a big jar on top of my microwave and when I go shopping, I empty the coins into the jar. When the jar is full, I take it to either Capital One bank or TD bank, which have large coin counting machines. The machine gives a receipt with the total amount of the coins, which is usually about $50 more or less. I take the receipt to the teller who gives me the money.it's like "found money....it's a wonderful feeling!!

Hello Iriene88! I keep coins form loose change in different coin banks. I have various coin containers for those coins. I accumulate a lot in a week's time. Sometimes, I use them for payment of certain purchases. Sometimes, I just keep them until I have enough to deposit to my account. I do not keep much coins in my purse as it is really heavy.
