The longest I had to wait was in the emergency room right before Christmas and I had a serious burn on my hand. I had to wait for 5 hours in the middle of the night and they wouldn't let me put anything cold on all the blisters. I seriously thought I wouldn't live through the night.

I can sympathize with that..since our emergency room is not any faster..I had taken an elderly lady to the emergency many a time prior to here passing away..and we would arrive at 10:00 pm and leave at 2:00 am..and this is the emergency room?
Wonder how come they call it the emergency room..and people are so sick and have to wait and wait..+

This was on an unusually busy night. Icelanders bake special "leaf bread" for christmas, it is deep fried and there were a lot of people who got burned that night (I was more original and deep fried my hand in a french fry pot at work lol). There had also been some bad accidents. It's usually not that bad here but it does happen. They also try to prioritize. I have taken my son there and they have taken him in immediately even though the waiting room is full.

three hours- for the dentist. And when I got into his office, I only spent 5 minutes at most there getting some wire cut out .

wow..bet he didn't have to worry about putting you to sleep..If you were sitting 3 hours..you more than likely were ready to doze off..but then again only 5 minutes in his chair..that is so awful..I bet he charged you for the 3 hours you waited in their waiting room though;)+

lol- no. it was for my braces (which are off now!)The stupid brackets (those metal thingys you have stuck to your teeth) on one side of my mouth fell off, and the wire was poking me in the cheek. To this date, my dentist is still always late in his appointments.

I think the longest I have had to wait is 2 or 2 1/2 hours before we got called back to the little room. We have a walk in clinic that can take forever and a day. The one on the other side of town (same affliliations)you are in and out within 20-30 mins. The only thing is they don't see anyone under 1 year.

That is something. I just wonder why they set appointments if they never intend to get you in on the time that is set..Don't you wish you were back in the toddler years..and not have to wait a couple hours to be treated:)+

I won't wait in the waiting room past an hour. I get up and let them know I'm not at all happy about the wait. Usually I get in soon after that. Otherwise I'll just reschedule. I can understand it happening once in awhile, but if it's a frequent problem, I'll find a new doctor. It's so ironic, if you cancel less then 24 hours, they can charge you for the visit still, if you're running late, they cancel your appt., but it's ok to make you wait forever, not acceptable in my opinion. Also, I've found that if you make the appointments first thing in the morning, like they open at 9, you make your appt around that time, you're less likely to wait for long periods. Usually, I was told anyway(& it makes sense) they start running behind because of people calling in for appts at the last minute, people running late etc.

You seem to handle the situation pretty well, that is getting up and telling them you are going to leave..Over here when you get up and tell them you are going to leave ..they ask when I want to reschedule my appointment..lol. So if I get up and leave I simply have to return and wait again..I keep saying there must be some law against the tardiness of the medical professionals..anywhere else if you're late you are docked and later on if continuously tardy..fired..Doctors are exempt..why?+

What do you do to pass the time? Do you read..4 hours is long..but I know people and I am probably one of them..who have waited more than 4 hours.. I take lots to do when I go to the doctor ..practically bring a suitcase..LOL ..people probably think I have lost it and should be at the hospital;)+

Yes..I agree.and since the waiting rooms are usually warm they are good breeding grounds for germs to multiply and spread.
I know every time I go to the doctor..not long after being there..I come up with a cold:(+

Good idea to bring your own stuff. It's really gross to hear the stories about all the germs on the magazines in the doctors office. Imagine all the diceases and illnesses people who have handled them have had. I know most of those germs wouldn't surwive long but it still grosses me out and I never pick up a magazine in a waiting room.

that is just awful..I would have stated my case quite loudly and let him know I had been there five hours..I wonder why the doctors get away way with this..there should be some kind of guidelines and laws for them..There should be a deduction from their fee for every hour they are late on their appointments;)+

Actually I think they do follow some guidelines. Their excuse for overbooking is that so many people cancel their appointments or don't show up at all. Then they keep squeezing someone in all the time because it's an emergency. But there should be limits to how much they can overbook and how many patients they can squeeze in!

I dont go so far as to hate the doctors..but I am mumbling some very unkind things to myself..as if mumbling will make the minutes go by any faster..I try to pray and for while it helps then I run out of prayer power..and the old tempter come around and reminds me how long I have been waiting..and the fact that I am not patient!!!+

The longest wait I can remember is when I 1st moved to Tennessee and hooked up with a real quack. I got very, very sick about Thanksgiving time, found out it was double pneumonia, and was hospitalized. This doctor walked in the door to see me. He looked at me from across the room and announced, "You need to stay in hospital until Monday." Then he left. On Monday he discharged me with instructions that I was to come to his office to be rechecked in a week.
A week later I still felt pretty bad and worn out, but I had the appointment, so my husband took me. Even though there were few people in the waiting room, we ended up waiting 4 hours to get called in. We weren't put in an exam room; instead they stuck us in some room where they must do minor surgeries or something, because all that was in it was a bed.
We waited another long period of time, but by then I was so exhausted that I could hard stay sitting up much less tell time. They never even closed the door while we were sitting there. Finally the doctor breezed in. He looked from my husband to me and asked, "Who is patient here?" I told him I was. He said, "Oh yes, in the hospital." He stared at me a minute and said, "You look fine," and rushed back out the door. The bill for that visit was $280.
Shortly thereafter we found another doctor.

Wow..that is something that can be good reading for "reader's digest" you might just get enough to cover that minute look.
I think it's just awful what doctors get away with.. They keep you waiting so long and then just give you a minute of their time! Wonder if patients can form a union and do something about all this abuse they suffer ??+

2 hours for a specialist last year. I mean, if you HAVE an appointment, they should be close to on time. I should bill THEM for their tardiness!

I once had an appointement at 11 a.m. and went into the doctor's office at 2:45 p.m.
Since I always get there a bit in advance, in this case i'd been there since 10:30 a.m.
I waited 4:15 hours.
I was getting really impatient and fed up, but had no choice to stay, it was for a work related injury follow up.

It is awful and to think that so many little germs running around..People coughing and sneezing..etc.. IF you didn't have a virus or cold when you arrived ..you have one when you leave and then have to come back to have that treated:(+

I know that would really be trying and to think that after all that time you don't see your doctor? I would be hurt a little too.. I think there should be some rules regarding how long doctors can keep patients waiting!+_

I would say about 2 hours. Now going to the er is a whole differn't story. I live in a small town. I took my daughter there a couple of weeks ago and you could throw a brick in there and it wouldn't hit anything but we were there for 3 hours. but the longest time in the er was about 8 hours.

yes thats true it usually takes a lot of time waiting for your doctor and i used to read books will waiting coz if you dont busy yourself its really annoying. thats why i am used to go to the emergency whenever i have pain to make sure i'll be treated immediately rather than go to the doctors clinic for check-up but for follow-ups you dont have choice but to go to the clinic and it takes about three hours!

Our emergency room most the time is slower than the Doctor's office..you are lucky that you get treated faster there..Sigh..What is the remedy to this dilema of long stays in the waiting room where all those germs are running around!!_+

i had an appointment with my specialist at 11 am and he saw me at like 1.30 pm ( by the way i pay the specialist 180 dollars to see him, you would think that he would atleast see me at the time he said he would)
in an emergency room i have waited like 6 hours once, my daughter sliced her foot open and blood everywhere, but we had to wait that long.

Isnt that awful..what did you do to pass the time..did you have a wrap around your daughters foot..I probably would have passed out on the floor if I had to accompany someone with blood all over the place..I dont have the stomach for that..I wonder..why one has to wait so long..and many times..the doctors and nurses are sitting in the station chatting.:(+

Ok, well the longest I have ever waited was actually in the ER... I got there at around 11pm... It was not busy at all! Then I waited until almost 4am!! You figured you're in the ER, they would see you a bit sooner... But apparently they forgot about me... I was a bit upset... But from what I have learned about Dr's offices and apts... It is always a good thing to bring some magazines or a book or some sort of puzzle... Crossword ect... That always makes time fly
