Is my degree worthless? Is yours?

I graduated over 9 years ago, I ma one of the class of 2000 and i got a good result (2:1) but i have never used my degree apart from talking to friends on line and ordering food on holiday. My degree is in Spanish, with cultural studies, but I just couldn't get a job in that field after i finished.
However, my time at university and living in spain gave me confidence i never had before, i changed from being the really shy girl into a more confident woman and the skills of study and concentration have done me well. So was my time at uni a waste of time as some people would say as i never use it, or was it good for me?
Anyone else in a similar boat?

I left university in 1999 with a 2:1 degree in Education and I am also qualified in English Literature. I got qualified teacher status and went to teach children in primary schools.
So your degree was in Spanish with cultural studies so that would be useful for a job that needs the employee to speak Spanish. I did a course in learning Spanish at level 1. I applied to do level 1a but not too few people wished to do it so it didn't take place.
A degree in Accountancy would be useful for a job as a accountant. A degree in a general subject like American Studies could be used for a job in something that just needs a degree.
Your degree is worth something I think and so is mine.

Yeah i know, just the self doubt kicking in! tried to be a teacher and i couldn't get to do the pgce, but i later found out i applied to one of the hardest unis in england for that!
My degree is worth four years of studying and the mental aptitude to get it and also the independance to live on my own and survive! Good things that help me get where i am today!

Ironic..
Now my degree was class of 1980 (yep, I am OLD), and it was in German. And I spent a year living in Germany. Is it useless, no I wouldn't say so. I use it for:
Reading things in German
Speaking to German people (my husband's family mostly)
And most recently, translating some German letters that were sent to my Great-Grandfather back in 1922 and 1923
Even if none of the above were true, I learned a lot about my own language from learning German, learned a lot about other cultures, etc.
Heck no, it wasn't wasted. Maybe it didn't end up being your career, but none of our experiences are ever wasted. And just like my German letters, who knows what good your Spanish may do you at some point in the future!

I sometimes feel like I haven't done all I could also, but you can't do everything...

Not that old! You are obviousdly still young in the head!
I have translated friends medical notes and marriage certificates so it does help there, and you are right, my english grammar is a lot better from studying other grammar! I love spanish culture and language so i will never regret it, just sometimes worry i've not done all i can, if you know what i mean.

Well, I don't think your degree make no sense! At least, you have enriched your mind in your university! Your inner quality is much better than lots of people who don't have the experience, which means you will potentically become some big thing! The probability that you will live better is sure much bigger as well

The future is bright! Yes we may not all reach our goals, but as long as we try our hardest and be happy with it we have succeeded in life. Thank you for your comment

The time you had spent in the university was not wasted. You have learnt many things, and you have even changed to a more confident person. Perhaps you might want to find an alternative instead of just relying on your degree to secure a job. Nowadays, having a degree is not a guarantee for getting a job. You could look elsewhere or be a private tutor.
That's my suggestion. Times have changed, and you've to be creative and bold in order to survive in this harsh world.

I was in a similar boat 5 years ago and I think most people who studied in a college may have the same feeling to you.
When we are acceptde by the universities, we are all feeling lucky for there are so many people who can't get the offer from any colleges. But graduating from universities, then we find that our degree are not so valueable as we have imagined. We have to try our best too in order to get a job.
But from where I stand, the college life is not a waste of time of course. When you enter an area that needs your knowledge, you will find it worth spending several years in university.

Even if i never work in my area, i am proud and happy with what i have acheived. At least i'm not a typical english person who only speaks one language!

Hi,there.em,first,I am not in a similar boat. But I think the degree itself means nothing. What really matters is the life we spended in the university. We not only learned the knowledge ,but also we learned how to learn, and we make friends ,some of them would be feiends of a lifetime. To get a job,the ability is the most important ,not the degree.

I just graduated in August and my degree is in Child Development. I'm currently employeed in a center where I work with one year old children. I'm considered an assistant teacher currently but I'm looking to see if it's possible for me to move up to lead teacher soon. We'll just have to see what happens.
I think people really need to choose their degrees wisely, as in, they need to be smart and choose something that is useful and not something that can just be tossed around. Sure, you may like it, but is it really useful? Will you actually find a job? Is it practical? Those are the questions that people should ask themselves before getting a degree.

Well my plan was to work in pr with spanish connections or with the cicil servie but none panned out, so i did think when i chose my degree, but maybe not what i would be good at! it is really hard as in britain you choose your expertise at 16 which is a really young age to know what you will do for the rest of your life and hard for people like me that were good in a wide range of subjects! At least i'm in a job i enjoy now after years in a career i hated

There is no such degree as a worthless degree. Having an education is in the first place something you must be proud of. The degree is just a distinction of what course you have taken. With Spanish course, you can be a Spanish teacher online. I believe there are many sites which can help you get employed.
Good luck.

Well, not using the degree you've got doesn't always mean that the degree is worthless UNTIL you yourself make the most of it. Opportunity is not an opportunity until you run for one. Well, if you wrote so that your degree is in Spanish, why not try to find a job related to your degree itself ? You can employ as a teacher or researcher, maybe, or anything else. It is just the matter of time until you find the right path for you. =) Cheers.

Well, I think that even if your actual major isn't the same as the field you end up, there is still value to having a college degree at all. Even if the degree is in an unrelated area, employers will still like to see that a job candidate went to college. And those other benefits you mentioned sound perfectly worthwhile, too.

Congratulations on your degree! You have plenty of time to get into the career you want, but having a job is an advantage as work experience is always good. At least with a customer facing job you can practise your psychology! good luck and keep looking!

The Engineering degree I got I used to get me into the door -in the jobs that I;ve had. I realized some companies use keywords in browsing candidate-resumes, and the degree will get you over the first filter. Then maybe you'd get the job. After that, it is pretty much useless.
I just keep the certificate to show the kids that I do have it. And hopefully they get inspired t get one of their own.

I've got mine on the wall as a reminder of what i have acheived an to inspire my kids and others that they can do it too! I've never stopped studying, no matter what my career i keep trying to be better and one day i will be happy that i have acheived all i can!

The degree you acquired is was not useless at all. You wouldn't gain your confidence if you don't go to Spain. People used to say that the greatest gift a person could have is education. I think thats true to this day. No matter what people say "its is still a fulfillment and you should be proud of it.
For me, I graduated in Engineering course and it happened that my line of work fits the course I finished. But others are not as lucky. I see some former classmates end-up working as a Supervisor in a call center.

Now engineering is one of the things i feel that i should have done! It looks so interesting! I od love my job, and the reasoning skills etc that i learnt at uni really helps, as well as my confidence, you can't organise meetings and networks without confidence! plus the life i chose led me to my hubby and friends so all good points!
