Are real photo albums a thing of the past?

I did general cleaning of my house this weekend. I was clearing some old books, papers and litters, and I felt the urge to leaf through old photo albums that were already collecting dust and dirt in the shelf. I enjoyed reminiscing moments as I looked at each picture, and they really brought me back to the past. And then I had a sudden realization: I haven't made a family photo album in a long time. With the advent of digital camera, very few now use camera films that needed to be developed so you can see how you looked in the picture. Digicams made pictures readily available to everyone, and sharing them became even easier as they can be sent online and can reach family and friends who live on the other side of the globe in just one click. Somehow, storing pictures in a photo album became more of a "want" than a "need".
So, do you still make real photo albums, or do you just store your pics in your computer?

hi there,
As you've said there's no need to develop pictures as we can share it to friends online. I have stored all our photos in every event or even the daily keepsake photos of my son in my laptop other than the albums I've posted from friendster and facebook. But of course I also have a specially made photo album of my son actually from gestation (ultrasounds) to birth and the monthly shots as we celebrate his birthday. I've made it handy for us to reminisce his childhood development and in a way to tell him of our great love and gratefulness that he really is the most precious gift we ever had. I adore him, my one and only son...thanks god for the blessings!

,HI Sean,
I know how sentimental moms can be, specially with their first born. I remember keeping the pregnancy kit that indicated positive, all the ultrasounds, the first hand print and foot print, and all the minute details of my kids. These are the ones that are really considered a treasure and should be immortalized in an album. Special occasions like baptism, first smile and all the "firsts" that should also be placed in a photo album. As to the other pictures I'm okay with saving soft copies in the computer, but if I have the time I still would like to make a real photo album of all those captured special and that not-so-special moments. Happy to see you here.

hi doryvien,
Precisely, it so happen that I am one of those sentimental moms and that makes me believe the importance in keeping all the "firsts" and captured precious moments of my one and only son. Regards......

Hi Anggun,
I do store my pics in the computer too, but I go beyond that. I also save all the pictures in a cd or portable drive so that just in case the computer breaks down, I don't have to worry about losing all my precious pics. Thanks for dropping by.

It is a long time since we made photo albums last. Thanks to the use of digital cameras, we deposit pictures in our computer and seldom have photos developed. But recently we are required to develop some photos of our baby son's by his teachers in the kindergarten. When my baby son's photos are developed, they are required to stick in the school's handbook for the child as a way of recording their growth each month. So we are doing this according to the teachers' instructions. Take care.

Hi William,
Now that you mentioned it, my kids have had some homeworks that require them to make a photo album and/or photo frame showing their baby pictures and the most current ones, the purpose of which is to see the differences between their baby and the "now" pictures. Happy to know that you are take the time to help your son do his school projects. Have a good day.

I have a photo album of some old film photos and I am in the process of scanning them in so I have a digital back up of the photo. Then I upload them to an online photo album.
I would like to still have an album or two. I will not print out every pictures because I have way too many and would probably have about 20 or 25 albums if not more!

Hi Lulu,
Yes, I too would like to keep albums, but only choose only those that are really good shots, and those that are really memorable and remarkable. And I agree too that we should have back up or soft copy of them so it's easier to retrieve whenever necessary. Thanks for dropping a post.

We still have photo studio which takes film type photos for us. But most of them are digital type. At times I still look through my old photo albums. It brings back good memories. Today I just burn these digital photos into VCDs and stack them into albums.

,HI James,
Pictures kept in a computer may be accessed only by the owner of that computer, or some select few who have access to that computer. The photo album is readily available for anyone and doesn't need to be switched on to see them. But digital photos save a lot of space, which is actually getting scarce this days.

Hi doryvien, me, i still keep pictures in photo albums. I see to it that most of our pictures taken by digital camera are developed and kept in my album. Though it is copied in the computer already, it is still nice to have an album so i can keep them longer. Storing pictures in computers,is hi-tech but it might not be safe also because these can be corrupted if something happens to the computer. I can tell yet which of the two ways of keeping pictures last longer but i prefer having an album of pictures.

,HI Jazz,
I agree, storing soft copy of pictures in a computer may not be a sound idea after all as you run the risk of losing them should something happen to the computer. It's still better to have them printed and kept in photo albums. Plus it makes memories more vivid when viewing them on photo albums than when they're viewed on the screen (at least that's how I feel). Thanks for dropping by.

How very true! Digital cameras are a short cut to instant gratification…I remember the days of breathless waiting when the film roll would come from the photographers after being developed…what fun it was to go thru the pixes together, specially of a just concluded family vacation.
I too miss those days, however I feel that albums were way better than this CD storage…holding an actual photo in your hands is a completely different feeling than just browsing them on the screen.

HI sudiptacallingu,
I cant' agree more. I remember the pleasure of arranging pictures in an album, and making a sort of story line such that anyone who sees them would have an idea of the story behind each picture. Now I'm thinking of printing my photos saved in the computer...seems like a good adea.

doryvien,
Being an avid photographer myself from the conventional negative film strips right to the current digital, I have a collection of both the photographs and negative filmstrips.
However, since the emergence of digital age, I have digitize much of my collections including my collection of negative strips by scanning them into my computer and burning my favorites onto a CD or DVD.
Like you, since the arrival of digital camera, digital photography has given me more ways to collect, share and exhibit my works. I like the instant previews, corrections and lesser prints especially when another party wants to have the photos as well.

Hi Sky,
I can imagine photographers like you would have loads and loads of filmstrips and pictures as obviously pictures are their passion. I think it's safe for me to say that you as a photographer can put more meanings into a picture than an ordinary onlooker like me. For me pictures are better appreciated when they are tangible, but easier to manipulate when they're in soft form, what do you think?
Now I have more pictures stored in my computer than printed photos in the album. Soft copies are easier to manage, but which ones really last longer, the ones saved in the cds/memory cards/computers, or the one in photo albums? Thanks for coming in here Sky.

I have plans to scan all the photos and place them onto a c.d. so that I can keep them in one spot. If I have to move any where, I can destroy the original photos, move and reprint them when I do get to my destination. At least this way, having the photos on a c.d. would save alot of room. The only photos that I would be keeping are the ones that cost me alot for.

Hi Chookie,
Oh yes, soft copies of pictures come in handy when moving places, it's a lot more convenient than carrying loads of heavy photo albums. Hmmn, my husband saved some of our photos in a CD, but through time I think even CDs do "expire", or however you call it. When we tried to access the CD years later it just can't be opened. Good thing the pictures saved there were still in my hard drive. Have a good day!

i used to enjoy making scrapbooks and making colorful photo albums but since we had a digital camera, i saved all my pictures in a cd since it occupied less space.

Most of my photos are in my computer but I plan to have them developed and placed in an album too. Photo albums are still great when you whenever you want to reminiscence about the old days especially when you become too old to use the computer. Just make sure to use quality albums to preserve the pictures well enough for your grandchildren to see. It will make a great bonding moment to pass them around during family reunions.

Hi Astreadido,
The last photo album I have is when my second child had his first birthday, which was in 2003. After that all pictures were no longer printed but stored in a hard drive in a computer. Me too, I plan to make photo albums again so that my kids will be able to flip through them when they grow older.

I love taking pictures,..i love, looking back at them and watch the flashbacks in my mind of all the wonderful memories, behind those pictures, that's why I and my family still developed pictures from the digital cameras and even in cellphones with camera and compile it in a photo album and also save it our computer desktop, it is for multiple purposes.in essence, because not every one knows how to use the modern technology, still they have this manual and practical way to go back in time with the photo albums in every time they want. we also upload the same pictures in the computer for safety purposes, that it may not fade by the passage of time, and that our relatives abroad can be updated through sending and viewing of pictures with the usage of computer and other technology.
I also developed pictures, because i post them in my scrapbooks, and upload them for editing and adding of details through the computer.

Hi Khulith,
Nothing compares to having those photos placed in a nice and durable photo album that will last a lifetime for the next generation and the next after that. I love looking at old photos of old family members specially if there is a good story to tell.

it's a good question.
i used to develop photos and put them to albums, but now i always save photos on my computers.sometimes i also wonder whether high technology does us a favor or not.yes, with digital cameras,we can make photos fast and convinient.however,it makes us lazy to change them to really photo albums.what if our computers have something wrong or being attacked by virus?and esp for our relatives who could not handle computers well, they have little chance to see our new photos.so,in my opinion,it is safe to change photos to real ones and keep them carefully.

Hi colorfulseafish,
Yes,losing all the photos taken during special occasions is possible when the computer where they are stored breaks down, and the memory card or hard disk can no long be recovered. As the other responders here suggested, it would help to save them on CDs or DVDs, and maybe I should add memory cards or flash drives too. But I still believe nothing beats having the printed photos placed in photo albums that are kept safely in shelves.

Lately too I had been looking to our old photo album and it's nice to reminisce those times like it was just yesterday..True, with the advance in technology, life is becoming easier for most of us, and as things are continually developed to make our life easier, we forgot some part of our human touch, to share moments and capture it forever. Most of us now prefer digital photos and store it on memory drives, sometimes failing to look at some of those moments..Honestly, I am one of those who take pictures and just scan those on my digital camera and later saved it on my hard disk..I have an idea anyway, I make a digital slideshow with a nice background music to be played on television. In that case, I can browse on it later to cherish those moments..

Hi Drlanaria,
Photo albums do bring back memories, and even the dust and dirt in them and the faded colors of the pictures just make you feel even more sentimental; well, that's how I felt when I looked at my old pics. Making a digital slideslow is a good way to make an album, specially when sharing them with family and friends who live far.
